FAQ:
Q: Do you take commissions/trades/requests?
A: Commissions - Sometimes I do. If you'd like to be added to a waitlist to get notified when I open slots, please reach out. My slots often fill up pretty quickly though.
Trades - Yes! I typically make posts calling for trades when I can handle it, but feel free to reach out.
Requests - Eh, I only follow through on requests of geologic formations like volcanoes. I can't even do requests of my own OCs...
Q: What are your art tools?
A: I mainly use digital tools. I'll update this once I start printmaking again. My backgrounds are done by following the same techniques as irl gouache painting because I think it's neat.
Programs: Clip Studio Paint & Procreate
Tablet: iPad Pro & Apple Pencil or Wacom Bamboo Capture tablet & pen
Brushes: I use a bunch of different ones, please send me an ask and link the image you had in mind so I can reverse engineer my process and brushes for you.
Q: What is your favorite rock?
A: I'm a big fan of igneous rocks but if I had to really choose, diorite! I love how the look like cookies 'n cream. I also like peridotites, especially kimberlites.
Q: What is your favorite mineral?
A: Fluorite! I love their cube shapes. I also love copper-bearing minerals like dioptase, malachite, azurite, chrysocholla, etc. and radioactive minerals like torbernite. I mainly collect igneous rocks & minerals, copper-bearing minerals, and Texas rocks & minerals.
Q: And your favorite volcano?
A: Definitely Sunset Crater! I find cinder cones to be endearing amongst other types of volcanoes because of how odd they are, and as I have a huge interest in Route 66, I really love volcanoes along/near Route 66.
Q: How did you choose to become a volcanologist?
A: Insanity, networking, and flexibilty.
Some people have a cheesy "I've always known what I wanted to be as a kid/in college," but the reality is...most people don't know what they want to do!! And it's totally ok. Hell, I didn't know what I wanted to do after graduating and thought I was too dumb to become a volcanologist. It took me almost 2 years after graduating to really cement it in that I want to play with lava for a living pursue volcanology thanks to a handful of kind and very passionate volcanologists that wanted to share their world with me — just meet volcanologists and ask about their research and what they do, why they chose volcanology, what they did to get to that point, etc, and also ask them to introduce you to others in the field if they don't already offer it themselves. It is detrimental that you try to meet other people in this field and network with them. They might tell you things about the field, who to look out for, who's good to work with, any cool programs to apply for, if any place has open postions, and so forth.
To be a volcanologist, you must have the drive to become one and have at least some entry level expertise on volcanoes. If you can't get a geologist/volcanologist/scientist position at a place with a volcano, try asking to meet with someone or volunteering, working for their visitor center, interpretation, or maintenance, etc at a place with volcanoes — you will get to meet people who do work in those positions and also experience The Volcano daily as you work, which is great for learning + a lot of the job requires comfort with being outdoors. Many of these places offer internships or seasonal positions, so don't feel like you are stuck there forever or don't have credentials. People call themselves artists because they have the skill to draw, not because they are hired to draw.
Good luck out there.
Q: Do you work for Cartoon Network?
A: Yea, as their on-site geologist. I told them their building is sinking. (JK, I do not and have never worked in the animation industry. I honestly get very surprised when people assume I do. )
I've done art for research and education in geoscience and conservation for some organizations and agencies, as well as independent work. I can't tell you which they are, you'll just need to find out yourself ;-]

Characters I have are humans that are based off of rocks and minerals, a car, and my twin volcanoes. My humans all have anthro designs and some have feral designs too. TB has his lupe (neopet) design as well.
(PS this is my last year before starting my PhD so I wanna go super crazy! I'm also in the mood to draw a bunch of sparklewolves so if you have a character like that, you should fill out the hitlist)
So fucking sick of this narrative that bsky users have that "aww bsky is a smaller company they have to comply with laws or they will be fined we have to go after the source (the government)"
and it's like...it's both, guys. These "online safety" laws that are being introduced are bad for infringing our rights but so is bsky for complying, especially for lying to their users and jumping the gun to force age verification. It reminds me of when Target and Walmart jumped the gun to get rid of everything DEI out of nowhere for their own workforce when that was a federal government exclusive order and had nothing to do with things outside the federal government.
If other social media sites AND the mobile app store which is specifically what Texas laws wanted to verify age for (like carding you to enter a bookstore basically which is crazy in of itself) doesn't force me to verify age, there's no reason why Bsky should be doing it. Other than that they really want our personal information

Oh ok, so it turns out Bsky is lying about age verification laws in my state and twisting what was actually passed.
Some laws do exist but the one that just passed was to verify age to download apps from the appstore (apple & google) on a mobile device. This is a screenshot from using my computer browser to access so...nothing related...why the hell is this damn site so hungry for our identities this pisses me off
Big talk coming fron the guy who jokes about dying in eruptions but my pet peeve is jokes about volcano sacrifices because they just seem racist and uninformed to me. There isn't any known true record of a sacrifice via throwing someone into a lava lake outside of writings from Spanish colonists which seem exaggerated and this trope was made popular by a 1930s Hollywood movie (Birds of Paradise). And lava lakes are among the rarest types of volcanic eruptions. I think we can leave this one behind.
Joking about the volcano getting you: ✅ funny, vague, has implications that the volcano is a beast
Joking about volcano sacrifice: ❌ not funny, pulls from racist and colonialist sources that are untrue, scientifically inaccurate

Random thoughts on posting on instagram after a few months of doing it
I started using Instagram as a space for locals and IRLs (friends, family, coworkers) to see my art so I don't care about my posts taking off or not. I stay in my own lane and post whenever I feel like it and don't follow trends or anything. It's literally just a space for me to connect with (mostly) local artists and see what events are going on.
But damn, this is also genuinely the most miserable art community I've ever seen in my life. Almost very artist there seems to only care about getting large numbers of followers and monetizing their work, and there's always so much begging and guilt tripping that happens on that app. If you are an outlier who speaks out against all the sellout wannabe's and mention that no one needs to post shameful begging & making these short form videos (which literally also influences bad behavior with the audience), there is active pushback against it by users claiming its the "only way" to grow their account.
It's just sad to see. Many are also very young artists. And they're just stuck on the app, mixed in with other accounts that are actually just small businesses making sales, who log in to show off new products in the form of posting art, and not engage in the community. Many of these people who are in financially sound positions to be able to quit their full-time jobs and have their own ~*~aesthetic~*~ studio spaces and materials and run an art business. Convincing others to monetize their hobbies full time and anyone who falls out of it is a failure or not doing it right.
Instagram is literally just a glorified advertisement app now where every other post is someone trying to sell you something and the app earning money from you working your ass off to get engagement only to earn nothing. And I wish more casual/hobbyist and new artists on that site finally realize this.
Sometimes I want to reach out to tell artists that this isn't the only way for them to grow. It's possible to do so just posting what you want and whenever you want, not having to do shameful begging, and just staying in your own lane. It's OK to not be a full time artist, and find other jobs to support yourself. Stop with the romantization of a "dream job". (I work my dream job and many days it still feels like just work!!!!!!)
There are far better sites than instagram, even if they still suck. Hell, I'm gonna admit even Twitter is better than Instagram. At least on Twitter it isn't subtle advertisements being shoved in my face all the time. And fast followers aren't typically the ones that stick around. You don't want to grow your account, what you crave is community and connections.

nooo cyan is now personifying the sciences themselves.....
geology animal.......
had the idea of making creatures based off different fields of science (special shoutout to @/itchynia's Major Sciences of Biota project which is a similar concept and may have inspired thisssss)
wanted to do geology first as proof of concept and also because it's the field that I personally belong to
I want to do other fields but I can't guarantee they'll be as polished as this lol
