So today, I almost burst into tears in a cafĂŠ because my Nan tried to get me to eat some onion rings. Iâve had people ignore me before when Iâve said no over little things, but because I was feeling particularly vulnerable today, Iâve decided to explain why it bothers me. My Nan had kindly invited us out to lunch, so despite feeling vulnerable, I went. I briefly mentioned I might get a side of onion rings with my meal, then decided against it because I felt a bit sick. I said as much. My Nan however, tried to convince me to have some and even after me telling her no three times, still ordered them for me. This would not have bothered me so much except, when I didnât eat them, and told her it was because I was full/sick, she said âbut I got them especially for youâ seemingly discounting the fact sheâd eaten half of them herself and that Iâd said I didnât want them in the first place. She then continued to mention it as everyone finished up while nudging/elbowing me giving me a sly looking saying 'go onâ. I wanted to cry in frustration that as an adult, I was not trusted on what would and wouldnât make me vomit! However, the continuing dismissal of me saying no, the pressure I felt, (to eat fricking onion rings) and the lack of control I had of the situation bought back some very bad memories for me. I wonât specify as I feel people that have gone through a number of very different ordeals can still relate to felling pressured and having a lack of control. The point I want to make is that IF SOMEONE SAYS NO, RESPECT THAT and them. If someone has to say no more than twice, JUST STOP. You donât know what that person has been through or what saying no and having THEIR CHOICE respected means to them.
