Faerie List
Alvens: These are Water faeries who float around on bubbles and hate fish. During a full moon, they come on land to dance and play. They are not particularly friendly.
Amadan Dubh: This is a particularly dangerous type of faery that is greatly feared among the Gaels. They are known as the âfairy fools,â and the bringers of madness and oblivion. They play faery enchantments on their reed pipes on hilly slopes and precipices after sunset.
Banshee: The name âbansheeâ means a woman of the faery. It corresponds to the âFear Sidheâ or faery man. The wild banshee wanders through the woods and over the moors at dusk, and some- times lures travelers to their death. Banshee can also travel at will to great distances. Appearing in tattered gray clothes, they are basically a sociable faeries who have become solitary through sadness and grief. They are the honor- able ancestral faery women of the old clans of Ireland, who are heard, but rarely seen. They wail a blood-curdling lament just before mis- fortune, illness, or death occurs in their ancestral families. Their wail can kill or instantly age mortals who hear it. Banshee also avenge the death of their descendants. They generally appear either as beautiful maidens or gruesome crones. Salt water and silver can harm them.
Bendith Y Mamau: They have the ill disposition and ugly appearance of goblins, but the glamour of the faeries. Living in underground caverns, they donât care very much for mortals and they have been know to steal cattle and children, to kill farm animals, and to break important tools.
Billy Blin: A household familiar who is popularized in English and Scottish songs.
Boggart: They are known for breaking things and making trouble, but seldom do serious harm. Most old homes have a boggart. The supernatural boggart is sly, annoying, mischievous, and a prankster. They pull the covers from sleeping mortals, rap or pound on the door at odd times, or rearrange the furniture at night when you are sleeping.
Brownie: They are from 1 to 2 ft. tall and are scattered throughout the highlands and lowlands of Scotland as well as the northern counties of England. They have brown, wizened faces and hair growing all over their body, so they donât need to wear clothes (although sometimes they are seen wearing brown cloaks with hoods). As household faeries, they do unfinished jobs such as mowing, threshing, caring for the laying hens, and tending the sheep and cattle. They bring good luck to a family, providing that the family treats the brownie well. Brownies also love animals and will take care of the household pets. They adore gifts of food and drink such as milk and honey cakes, but abhor gifts and wages. Urisks are the Scottish version of brownies.
Buccas: Residing in Cornwall, they are magickal beings that inhabit mines. Also called tinmine demons, they are the wind goblins that foretell shipwrecks.
Bwca: This is a sort of Welsh version of a brownie, but a more particular one. They can be great help around the house, but if offended they can become harmful, throwing things around the house, spoiling the milk, and ruining the beer.
Callicantzaroi: Naked, they ride about on chickens. They live in troops and are zealous in their celebrations of Yule.
Clim: A mischievous goblin that resides in chimneys and peeks out at children, scolding them when they are bad.
Clurichaun: Residing in southwest Ireland, they are renowned drunkards who both guard and raid wine cellars. The Clurichaun sing in Gaelic and have beautiful, magickal voices.
Coomlaen: These âelven steedsâ appear as tall, thin, white or silvery horses who live in the forest and are always in the company of elves. As shapeshifters, the coomlaen can take the shape of their de- sires, but must return to the shape of a horse once during each day for at least six hours. They are fiercely devoted to one rider at a time and the bond lasts for the lifetime of the rider. The two communicate telepathically. Because the Coomlaen defends its rider, in order to befriend a coomlaen you must first befriend its rider. Coomlaens adore gifts of apples and honeysuckle. Iron is harmful to the coomlaen.
Cooshie: Also known as the âelfin hound,â they live in the forest and appear as large, silver-furred wolves that move quickly with the grace of a large cat. The cooshie stay with their elfin masters, and have heightened senses, including knowing when there is any magickal, spiritual, or physical presence in their territory. Like elves and coomlaens, they have an aversion to iron. Cooshies can heal sick or injured travelers and calm troubled minds and hearts.
Corrigans: From Brittany and Cornwall, they live in the woods, near streams. Corrigans are winged faeries who like to play pranks, such as taking human babies and replacing them with changelings.
Daoine Sidhe: The immortal polytheistic group of goddesses and gods of Pagan Ireland who merged with the land, these are the cream of the crop of faeries that form a faery nation. They appear in human form, dressed in green, and are called the peaceful faeries. They preside over the faery kingdom, play sweet music, dance, ride milk-white faery horses, and are generally accompanied by their faery hounds.
Dryad: They are happy, friendly, and playful wood nymphs who live in and take care of the trees. They are born of the same seed as the place they live. Dryads are the color of tree bark or leaves and their dark green hair is extremely long and flows about them. They can disappear by stepping into a tree, as if stepping into a dimensional door. Sometimes their skin is dappled like a tree trunk. Dryads are usually very charm- ing, sing beautifully, and particularly like willow and oak trees. Damaging a dryadâs tree harms the dryad as well, but the dryad can defend its tree by creating storms and lightning.
Dwarfs: Both male and female, dwarfs are usually from 3 to 5 ft. tall, with broad shoulders, large muscles, long arms, stumpy legs, and lots of facial hair. They are quick tempered, loyal, and immune to physical damage. Working with Earth, Fire, and stone, they are found underground under moun- tains and hills where they mine metals and gems, especially copper. Their craftsmanship is unmatched in the mortal world. They adore gifts of both precious metals and gems.
Eash Uisge: They are the Highland water horses known for being fierce and dangerous. They have the ability to shift into the shape of young, hand- some men.
Elves: According to Norse mythology, elves and dwarves are created in the time before humans from the body of Ymir, the giant. Inhabiting one of the upper worlds, and often found in Natural settings such as woodlands and forests, elves are somewhere between mortal and divine. Originally between 5 and 7 ft. tall, they were thin, strong, flexible, and quick. Their hair was usually red, blond, or light brown, and they had cat-like ears. Their cat-like eyes are green, blue, silver, or gold with slitted pupils. Through time, the elves became Elemental spirits of the land, sea, and forest, who are sometimes por- trayed as small, good-natured creatures with brown skin and delicate features. Iron does not kill elves, but it can injure them. They adore gifts of quartz crystal, pearl, moonstone, and silver. In the Western world, Santa Claus and his helpers are elves.
Ferrishyn: The Manx name for the faeries, also known as the âsleigh beggey.â
Fir Dearg: Also known as the âfear darrigâ or the âred men,â they are a mischievous, rare breed of faery, who dress in red and have red hair. Their only interest seems to revolve around playing practical jokes on humans.
Ganconer (Gean-canogh): Also known as a love faery, the ganconer is a leprechaun-type faery who appears as an incredibly handsome young male. Called the âlover-talker,â he spends most of his time seducing milkmaids and shepherdesses. Appearing in lonely valleys and fields, they are known for playing beautiful songs on their pipes, but their fate is ultimately to be alone.
Gnomes: They are elderly dwarf people who stand from 1 to 2 ft. tall, and like dwarfs, live under- ground except for the few times when they come up to roam in the deep forest. Male gnomes grow long beards. Gnomes live under old oak trees in heavily forested areas, and like gifts of beautiful stones.
Gray Elves: Not choosing to associate with any other magickal beings, they live in isolated meadow- land. Gray elves have either silver hair and amber eyes, or pale, golden hair and violet eyes. They are very intelligent and extremely rare.
Gwartheg Y Llyn: The Welsh name for faery cattle, said to be usually milk-white in color. A farmer who gained the favor of this magickal cow was said to be richly rewarded, but the farmer who tried to lift a hand to hurt the animal would find misfortune would come to the farmer.
Gwradedd Annwn: The Welsh name for the âlake maidens,â they are beautiful and desirable, but are not like sirens and nixies. They are known for marry- ing mortals much like the Silkee or âseal maidens.â
Hobgoblins: They are the English cousins to the Scottish brownie and Welsh bwca. A house faery, a hobgoblinâs favorite place is behind the kitchen fire, once known as a âhob.â Once settled, they rarely leave the house, and when feeling ne- glected, they are known to hide keys in the most unlikely places. They are vulnerable to iron and gold. In folklore and literature, both Robin Goodfellow and Puck are hobgoblins.
Knockers: In Cornwall, they are generally helpful mine sprites that are particularly attracted to rich veins of ore. Miners of old were said to follow the sound of the knockersâ tools pounding the rocks to find a strike. Knockers are also known to warn against cave-ins and floods, and as such, the miners always leave them gifts of food and drink. In Wales, knockers are known as âcoblynau.â
Kobold: The German name for the âlittle people,â originally they were tree sprites who were captured and brought home in wooden boxes. The per- son who captured the kobold could open up the box and the kobold would do things for her or him. But if anyone else opened the box, the kobold would take revenge for being confined. They formed the basis for the original jack-in- the-box for children. They are old men the size of small children who wear pointed hoods or caps and green clothing. Loud noises and strong winds scare them. For gifts of food and milk left out at night, they will do any little job around the house and barn, such as washing the dishes, preparing meals, sweeping the floor, making the fire, or tending the farm animals. Kobolds also have the ability to cast binding spells and will go to great efforts to protect the members of the household. If mistreated, they can become truly nasty.
Leanhaun (Leanan) Sidhe: They are the faery mistresses or sweethearts of Scotland and Ireland. They crave love, and try to gain power over their lovers, treating them like slaves and draining all the life out of them before moving on to new lovers. Said to be an inspiration to poets and musicians, these magickal faeries act as sort of muses, giving the artistâs work an otherworldly quality.
Leprechauns: They usually manage to trick their way out of surrendering their gold. Only a select few get away with a leprechaunâs riches. Solitary faeries of Ireland, witty, fascinated with gold, they can pass by as a swirl of dust, knocking off your hat. They are generally 2 to 3 ft. tall, with wizened faces, bright eyes, and red noses. They dress mainly in greens and browns, and are known for their excellent shoe-making skills.
Lorilei: A solitary faery, who is beautiful and bewitching, she is known for lounging on rocky heights while singing a song of enchantment.
Lunantishee: They guard the blackthorn bushes particularly on Samhain and Beltane. If you cut a stick from the bush on either one of those days, you will suffer misfortune.
Mermaids/Merrows: They live in the airy palaces be- neath the waves. They wear red-feathered caps to swim from their underwater world to ours. If a mortal steals the cap, the merrow canât get back home. The females are beautiful, the males are ugly with green faces and red pig noses. Both have fish tails and webbed fingers. Taking mortal lovers, their offspring are covered with scales.
Muryans: Cornish faeries, the word âmuryanâ means âant.â These are faeries the size of ants, who are shapeshifters. Every time they shift shape, they get smaller, eventually getting so small, they disappear from sight.
Nixie: They are Water sprites that inhabit lakes and seldom venture onto land. Their houses are made from seaweed and are guarded by giant fish. They are known for charm spells that convince humans to do their bidding.
Nymphs: Nature spirits who evolved into faeries, they live in clear lakes, streams, and crystalline caverns. Intelligent and beautiful, they do not like intrusion, but will be friendly if approached by a good-hearted mortal. Nymphs have the power of prophecy and take mortal lovers. They are also said to be extremely hard to avoid once they have taken an interest in you, and can occasionally be dangerous if they become obsessed with you. Often traveling in pairs, nymphs are mobile, but they can also permanently align themselves with trees, rock outcroppings, mountains, rivers, and springs. They appear as young, extremely gorgeous women, who are frequently dancers, artists, and musicians. They are amorous and have insatiable sexual appetites. According to folklore, a nymphâs lifetime was the same as that of the phoenix, who outlived nine ravens, who out- lived three stags, who outlived four crows, who outlived nine generations of aged mortals.
Oakman: A wood faery who lives in oak trees, the oakman is a guardian of the animals. The familiar saying âfaery folks are in old oaksâ speaks of their kind. The oak is considered the tree of the dead and the abode of departed spirits. Oakmen resemble drawfs with red noses, wear red toadstool caps, and have an affinity with bluebells.
Pechs (Pehts): The name used for the faeries of the Scottish Lowland, Pechs are said to be like the feens of the Highlands and the trows of Shetland.
Phouka (Pooka): Originally deadly sea horses with glossy coats and metallic-like hooves, phoukas are now often viewed as wild, mischievous creatures who are related to the leprechaun. Phoukas can employ the shape of an animal in order to play wild pranks and kill mortals. In contrast, in some stories that are told about them, phoukas that are treated kindly are known as friendly beings that help farmers.
Piskies (Pixies, Pigsies): Found frequently in Cornwall, Devon, and Somerset, England, they stand 1 ft. high (or smaller), are slim, and wear green clothes and pointed red hats. They have blond hair and green eyes, pointed ears and chins, and turned- up noses. They can also levitate and move tiny objects from one place to another. Usually friendly, they can also be mischievous, and are known to steal horses and ride them around in circles, creating Faery Rings as they do.
Portunes: These are teeny tiny faeries that are about a fingerâs length or less in size.
Redcaps: They live in castles and towers where evil deeds have been done so they can feed off the energy and create more of their own. They look like brownies, but wear caps made red by the blood of passing strangers at whom they have thrown stones.
Salamander: They are the powerful Spirit faeries of Fire because the salamander embodies the in- tuitive Element of Fire. Without the salamander, Fire would not exist. They come in all sizes and differ in appearance, but they are most often seen as being similar to a 1-ft. long lizard. They can grow larger or smaller at will. Sometimes they are seen as a ball of gold, orange, or red light. They are very devoted and quick to defend a friend. Working with the salamander helps you develop and strengthen your intuitive side.
Seelie: A good-hearted and benevolent group of faeries who glow as they ride the winds in search of humans needing help. The court of the kindly faery host is called the âSeelie Court.â âSeelieâ means âblessedâ in Gaelic. These benevolent faeries give gifts of bread and seed corn to the poor and pro- vide all kinds of help to their favorite mortals.
Sheoques: Appearing human-like, they live in ancient thorn bushes and faery forts that are surrounded by ditches. Also known for their bagpipe playing, they enchant and steal children, most times returning them unharmed and happy.
Shock: They appear as a horse, donkey, large dog, or calf. They are frightening and something to get away from if, by chance, you encounter one.
Sidhe: The word means âpeople of the faery mounds.â A distinction is often made between the âsidheâ who are seen walking on the ground after sunset, and the âSluagh Sidhe,â the faery host who travel through the air at night and are known to abduct mortals. There are also guardian âsidheâ associated with the lakes of Ireland and Scotland. These distinct categories of âsidheâ beings tie in with the testimonies of seers who divide the âsidheâ into Wood spirits, Water spirits, and Air spirits, i.e., the Elemental spirits.
Sidhe Draoi: Gaelic for âfaery druids,â folklore says that they took their name from the faery nymphs who taught them the magick of the trees. They are related to dryads.
Silkee: Usually found in seas and oceans, silkee first appear as seals, but become beautiful women when they shed their skin. They use their seal- skin to move from their world to this world. If their skin is taken from them, they can no longer move back and forth.
Sithich: Active Highland sprites known for being mischievous and having weapons that do their bid- ding, they are dexterous, child abductors, and intrude on women during childbirth. Their weapons are made of stone, shaped like a barbed arrowhead, and thrown with great force like a dart.
Sirens: They are Greek sea nymphs. The sirensâ enchantingly beautiful song entices sailors, leading them to their death.
Skillywidden: Small, young faeries who cannot shift their shape or alter their size.
Sleigh Beggey: The Manx name for the faeries.
Slievegallion: Known as the âhosts,â they are the spirits of mortals who have passed on into the otherworld. They fly about in great clouds, up and down the landscape. On clear, frosty nights they can be seen, and heard, fighting their battles in the air. They sometimes put mortals
Slyphs: under their spells to help fight their battles. Living for a thousand years without seeming to age, they are beautiful, changeable crea- tures that parallel nymphs, only they exist in the Element of Air. Living on the tops of high places such as mountains and cliffs, slyphs vary in size, are winged, transparent, elusive, and surrounded by a glowing radiance. For a very brief time, they can take on human form. They move by floating about with the wind, and as such, are known as the Spirit faeries of the Air. They inspire mortals, especially those individuals involved in the creative arts.
Spriggans: They guard the treasures of other faeries. Spriggans are ugly and dour, standing stone sprites that are said to have come over from Brittany where they are known as âkorreds.â Folklore suggests that they brought the origi- nal standing stones to Cornwall. They can be seen around old ruins, standing stones, bar- rows, giantsâ quoits and castles, and places where treasure is buried. They bring blight to crops, whirlwinds over crop fields, and storms. Spriggans are the ghosts of old giants, who appear small but can become gigantic at will.
Sprites: Very shy, delicate, and reclusive, sprites are winged spirits that dwell in meadows and wood- land glens. There are many types of sprites, depending upon their Element. Fire sprites are very rare. As William Shakespeare describes them in The Tempest, âSprites are spirits: they do not have bodies as fairies do.â They adore gifts of nuts, acorns, and sweet treats, and love to be flattered by mortals.
Trolls: Originally supernatural beings in Scandinavian folklore, later they became huge ogres with great strength and little wit. Trolls are known for guarding castles and treasure, hunting in packs in the deep forest, and being deadly to mortals. They can outrun any mortal. Fire and sunlight will harm them. Never try to befriend one.
Trows: They are the Shetland Island version of trolls. They live in caves near the ocean or in sandy hillsides. Thought to be somewhere between dwarfs and giants, trows are dimwitted, un- friendly, and ugly. Sunlight turns them to stone or makes them explode. The Scottish Highland name for trows is Feens or Fians.
Undines: As Elemental Water spirits usually found within forest pools, waterfalls, marshlands, rivers, lakes, and riding the ocean waves, the beautiful voices of the undines can sometimes drift above the sound of the water. They inhabit underwater caves, river banks, and lake shores. They are able to influence the flow of water in streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans, as well as the plants that grow in and under the water. Undines can appear human-like and are generally shy, but friendly. Peaceful, graceful, and attractive, their skin shimmers blue-green, green, or aqua like the water. The undines are ruled by love and adore gifts of sweet-smelling perfumes.
Unseelies: They are dark, malevolent faeries, who have excessive pride, are unkind, and have malicious ways. In contrast to the seelie court, the unseelie court is one of the malevolent faeries, who are hostile and harmful. Stay away from them and do not engage them in any way.
Water Sprites: They are closer to the traditional concept of a mermaid, and are the marine counterparts of leprechauns.
Wight: A supernatural being or creature that is very hardy. Every tree has a wight who is its guardian. An old Scottish verse says, âIf you call me blessed wight, Iâll be your friend both day and night.â
Soooo helpful for A Thing⢠I wrote that I needed help with. Look at this. Help has arrived.
crossroadsdinerâ:
Cas doesnât bother containing his smile as Zane defends themself. Theyâre sexy when they get righteous. Cas probably shouldnât tell them that in those words though.
He wraps his arm around Zane as they lean against him. âWhat a fuckhead.â Cas says in his best Rowan impression. He kisses the top of Zaneâs head. âDonât worry about it. You stood up for yourself well. It was great.â Cas Kisses Zaneâs hair again.
The assistant returns with the skates and asks if theyâd like to try them on. Cas nods and sits down with Zane to fit his skates.
âDo they, uh, do they need help?â The assistant asks Cas.
Cas sighs. âDo you think, if you put on your shoes, every single day, in the dark, youâd need help to put on shoes? I think Zane can manage. If they canât, theyâll ask for help. You really got to trust that they know what theyâre doing.â He goes back to putting on his own skates, but then realises he has more to add. Cas looks up again. âAlso, you can talk directly to them. You donât need to address me every time. Might be easier to talk to Zane, actually. Iâm the deaf one.â He points to his hearing add before turning his attention away from the assistant.
âThese fit right.â Cas tells Zane, ignoring the attendant for now. âIs there anything I should be checking other than a comfortable fit?â
Zane laughs at Casâ words. âI suppose so.â They smile as he kisses their head, some of their earlier insecurity fading in the face of his approval over their actions. âIâm glad you approve.â Former Prince or not, it was a lot harder to control their anxiety and insecurities in a world that didnât need them.
They bite their lip at the store assistanceâs continued dismissal of them, trying not to let it get to them. They did appreciate Cas being willing to stand up for them. They let him lead them to a nearby bench and sit down, taking the offered skates and expertly doing up the laces the same way theyâve been doing since they were a child.Â
They wait until they finish tying their own and confirmed theyâre the correct fit before feeling their way closer to Cas at his question. âIs it okay if I test them for you?â They feel for the knot first, noting that heâd tied it as if he were tying any other pair of shoes and that definitely wouldnât do. Well, technically it might, but he wanted them to teach him and the first lesson was on the correct way to tie ice skates.
They coach him through it easily enough before doing a few other things to test the skates, telling him what theyâre doing as they do it. In the end, they nod. âWell, if these still fit right after all that, then theyâll work for you.â
crossroadsdinerâ:
Cas is happy to let Zane take the lead on picking out skates. He has no idea about ice skating while theyâve done it before and are pretty knowledgeable in it. Heâs nodding along to what they say when he realises the attendants keeps looking to him. âZane knows better than me.â he says, again directing attention to Zane. âTheyâre the skater.â
âUm. Yes.â The attendant forces a smile. âIâm sure. Its justâŚâ They look at Zane, then lean in closer watching Zaneâs eyes fail to follow them. Cas holds up a hand between Zane and the man, easing him back with a thin smile. The man returns it uncomfortably. âAre you sure they wouldnât prefer beginner skates too?â
âZaneâs a capable skater and know what theyâre talking about. You donât need to judge their ability just because of their eyesight. Just get us our skates.â Cas tells the attendant his shoe size and asks Zane to do the same.
Zane canât see the attendant, but Casâ words are enough to help them realize the attendant is looking to him instead of them. âIâve been skating since I was nine, long before I went blind. No offense to Cas, but I think I do know a bit more about ice skating than he does,â they say with confidence they donât entirely feel. They did know more about the subject than him, but it had been some times since they skated.Â
They give the attendant their shoe size and lean their head against Casâ upper arm. âThanks.â Their voice is soft with an insecurity they hate themself for feeling, but the store attendantâs words reminded them that, while those at the diner knew they were capable, everyone else tended to be more like their mum and though they were incapable of looking after themself.

crossroadsdinerâ:
Zaneâs happy bouncing is adorable, but the kiss they give Cas is even better. âI thought you might.â he grins. Cas couldnât afford to take Zane out on fancy dinners, but he didnât think those were the kinds of dates Zane would find special. Theyâve probably spent half their live in fancier places than Cas can dream of. He wanted to do something for them that was just for them. Giving them back an old activity theyâd lost felt like the right thing.
âWell, I think I can probably manage the standing and moving to some extent, right? But you know a lot more, so maybe you can give me some tips and I can watch you and learn from that.â Cas wasnât book smart but he was clever. Heâd picked up sword fighting after watching someone once. He thinks he could learn to ice skate with some hints and a little support.
Cas leads Zane over to the shop and considers their question. He wants to be the one spoiling Zane but, if he thinks logically, Zane has more money than they know what to do with. Its silly for Cas to buy Zane things and, if he really thinks about it, accepting Zaneâs offer to get him skates isnât so much about giving a gift to Cas, itâll be a gift for Zane too. âIf you get me some skates,â Cas says slowly, âmaybe we can come skating more often? We could make it a regular thing?â Cas should probably find out if he even likes ice skating, but just seeing Zane this happy was reason enough to like it.
Cas gets the attention of a shop assistant with a quick smile and he comes over to help them. âWeâre after some skates. I think Zane knows best what weâre after.â Cas refers attention to them.
Zane nods. âYeah, maybe.â They should be able to stand and move around, but when it came to the more advanced techniques they were used to... it should still be possible, right? They didnât want to get their hopes up only to be disappointed. âIâm willing to try anyway.â
They let him lead them to the shop he mentioned, smiling brightly at his question. âYes. Iâd certainly love to do that if-â if they were capable of it. If it were possible for them to ice skate like this, they definitely wanted to do it. They didnât care if they had to relearn everything they already knew. It would be worth it. âIâve missed it, so you really want to come again, Iâm more than happy to join you.â
They smile kindly in the shop attendantâs voice once they hear it. âHello. I think my partner would like a pair of ice hockey skates, and Iâll...â they hesitate, unsure what to say. They were definitely a high-level skater, but they didnât exactly what Cas to feel left out, and they werenât even sure how much they could do at this point. âIâll take a pair of figure skates, Reidell if you have them with a higher support.â
To Cas, they explain, âIce hockey skates will give your ankle good support while still being comfortable for a beginner. Figure skates are made a little different since figure skaters do more tricks. The support on them tends to be higher since figure skaters do more leaping around on ice and you definitely want a firmer skate for that.â
Norse mythology from A to Z:

crossroadsdinerâ:
Cas watches Zaneâs face closely, waiting for the moment they figure it out. Their face lights up and he beams. Heâs done well then. âWe are. If youâd like to.â Cas hardly needs to ask Zane if theyâd like to. The answer is clear on their face.
âIâve never ice skated before, but I thought you could teach me.â Cas hopes heâs good enough to help Zane on the ice, if they need it. Theyâre probably going to want to skate away from him. Cas hasnât figure out how to do that safely in the public rink, yet, but he thinks theyâll figure something out together.
âI asked your mum to send your old skates, but they look like they might be too small.â Cas had thought maybe Zaneâs family had taken them skating since theyâd got back, but it didnât look that way. Seeing how over protective Luna was, its wasnât a surprise she didnât trust them blind on the ice. âI was going to rent my skates, but they have a little shop if youâd like to buy some new skates for yourself. I canât speak for the quality though.â
Zane canât resist bouncing happily at the confirmation. They raise their hand until they find Casâ face and feel around for his lips, kissing him when they find them. âI would freaking love to.â Even before they went to the Ice Kingdom, theyâd loved ice skating, and being on the ice made them feel free in a way nothing else ever had. To say theyâve missed it would be a massive understatement.
They sober a bit a the idea of teaching him. âHow will that work if I canât see?â Theyâd have to stick close to him, which they wouldâve done anyway since this was a date, but could they teach him like this? They certainly wouldnât be able to do anything like they used to. Itâs a sobering thought, but hopefully, Cas will have an answer for them.Â
They nod. âI disappeared when I was nine, and I rather hope Iâve grown at least a little since then.â They were still tiny, but they doubted they were that tiny. The idea of renting skates has their nose scrunching in horror. They understood that it was a necessity for some, but wearing skates that had once been on someone elseâs feet did not appeal. âIâd prefer to buy mine, if thatâs okay.â They tilt their head. âI can... if you want, I can buy you some too, in case you want to do this again?â They hoped that would be the case anyway.

âReally? No, I suppose not.â Princeâs didnât really get to date and Zane had been kept in a gilded cage since returning. They were never given a chance to date until now. It still surprises Cas that someone as pretty as Zane hasnât been asked out before.
âI better make this a good one then.â With Zaneâs permission, Cas takes their hand. He leads them into the building for their surprise date. The temperature noticeably drops as they enter. Despite it being summer, Cas had grabbed a jacket for both him and Zane for this reason. He has another surprise packed in his bag as well.
âI suppose I should tell you what the surprise is now, shouldnât I? But I want to see if you can guess first. Here. I have a hint for you.â Cas takes a pair of ice skates out of his bag and puts them in Zaneâs hands.
Heâd called Luna a few weeks ago and had her mail him Zaneâs old ice skates. Sheâd lectured him about them being blind but had sent the skates anyway. Cas just hoped they still fitted. He canât see Zane willingly wearing rented ones and, while there are some to buy, he thinks Zane will be fussy about the ones they get and he canât afford to get them expensive ones.
Zane lets Cas take their hand then rests their unoccupied hand near his elbow, trusting him to get them wherever they were going safely... and they just didnât feel like dealing with their cane. It was annoying on the best of days, and today they were going on their very first date with the guy they loved. It should be okay to now use the cane.Â
âI trust that you will.â Cas has been on more than one date before, so surely heâd know what makes a good date. Besides, it wasnât like Zane was that hard to please. Yes, they liked expensive things, but that mostly just applied to clothes and shoes (never mind that they could no longer see those things).Â
Cas leads them into a building and the temperature drops. That alone has them perking up in excitement. They hated summer heat with a passion, so this place was already gaining their approval. In the distance, they can hear something familiar but they canât quite put their finger on it. The item Cas puts in their hand gives them the answer once they feel the blades on the bottom. âIs this... are we... ice skating?â Their eyes light up at the prospect, and they grip Cas arm hopefully. They havenât been ice skating since they returned from the Ice Kingdom, California being too hot for water to ice over and no one in their family ever volunteering to take them due to their blindness. âAre we ice skating?âÂ

Cas makes himself comfortable, cuddling against Zaneâs chest. They havenât cuddle like this before, with Cas in Zaneâs arms. Cas appreciates Zane giving it a try for him. Cas really needs to be held tonight.
âThank you.â he mumbles. He knows it isnât necessary. Zane would stay with him if he wanted. He probably didnât even need to ask.
Cas snuggles in close and quickly falls into a peaceful sleep.
Zane smiles as Cas cuddles close. It definitely felt weird having Cas cuddled on their chest, but they could get used to it - eventually - if it made Cas happy. âOf course,â they respond quietly, knowing he likely wouldnât hear them.Â
It takes them a bit to get comfortable enough to fall asleep since they arenât used to this position, but they eventually manage it, and their usual nightmares donât bother them. Yes, they could definitely get used to this.Â

Cas gives Atticus a nod and rubs Zaneâs shoulder. He has it under control here. Atticus is free to go check on Rowan. From his experience, Rowan is probably beating himself up right now. Possibly literally.
Cas nods. âYeah, it was an overreaction.â Heâs not sure Rowan is always entirely in control of himself. Heâs reminded of his father and Rowan canât think of anything but fighting his way out of them. âIt was unexpected. Heâs been a lot better lately.â The last time Rowan had lashed out and hurt someone was Zane nine months ago.
Cas has to agree with that last point. Rowan had dished it out, but been unable to take any teasing in return. That said, âHe did tell us it was a trigger. I should have known better.â Cas is going to be beating himself up over that for a while. âThere were other ways I could have teased him. I shouldnât have said that.â
Cas runs a hand through his hair. Heâs not excusing Rowan. Rowan definitely shouldnât have hit him. Cas had fucked up too, though.
Cas just hopes this doesnât ruin any progress Rowan had made establishing a relationship with Zane. Cas desperately wants them to be able to get along.
With Rowan and Atticus gone, Zane sits back down, running their fingers along their braid. The braid Cas had done for them just this morning... which suddenly feels as if it was days ago rather than a few short hours. They wonder if their Rowan had a similar trigger or if it was just this one.Â
A large part of them wants to continue to defend Cas, if only so he wonât blame himself, but they were taught that a Prince must think with their head rather than their heart on matters such as this. They still believed Rowan overreacted, but if Cas had known it was a trigger and said it regardless... âI suppose so.â They tilt their head. âAre you alright?â They donât recall asking yet, though their alternate self definitely had.Â
The other Zane fidgets with their hands, wondering if it was their fault for chilling him. They hadnât appreciated his comments and for some unknown reason, thought it would be okay to treat him as they had Atticus. Theyâre afraid to mention it though, unsure how Cas would feel about it. Theyâd just apologize to Rowan later... as long as Atticus was in the room. It had been months since Rowan hurt them, but after this, they hesitated to be alone with him.Â
crossroadsdinerâ:
It is strange having Zane defend him so vehemently but it also makes Cas happy to see. Cas knows itâs not his Zane, but this confidence is something theyâre building toward. Theyâre already expressing this confidence in other ways, like opening their shop.
Cas gets to see some of that confidence come through as his Zane speaks up for Rowan. Theyâre timid, but they still risk saying something. Cas smiles warmly at them and gives them a gentle squeeze.
âRowanâs father used toââ Cas starts trying to explain to Zane, but Rowan cuts him off again.
âIf they donât know, they donât need to. Clearly the other me hasnât chosen to tell them and Iâm not going to tell a stranger.â Rowan storms into his bedroom, slamming the door behind him.
Cas sighs, swirling his hand in Zaneâs hair. âIâm fine. Iâm not happy I got punched, but I knew that was a trigger for him. Heâd told us. I should have thought before I spoke.â Cas would like to blame his head injury for impairing his rational thinking, but in truth heâd always been kind of reckless.
Zane frowns at Casâ words, what he says paired with Rowanâs reaction to them gives Zane much of the information they need to know about Rowan. His father was like theirs, but where Zane learned to love and embrace the things their father hated about them, realizing (with the Queenâs help) that theyâd be happier if the embraced what they loved, while Rowan continued to hate his.Â
They shake their head. They donât notice the way Atticus glances between their alternate self curled against Cas and the door to Rowanâs bedroom, waiting for confirmation Cas had things under control before disappearing after Rowan.
âStill, that seems like an overreaction to simple teasing.â Their Cas could be cruel - theyâd learned that first hand the hard way when he told them theyâd made his life difficult since their arrival, but they probably deserved it at the time, no matter how badly it stung to hear it - but they didnât think heâd ever intentionally hurt Rowan. âEspecially with what heâd said before.â
crossroadsdinerâ:
Rowan isnât sure how heâs going to handle things if Atticus is a touchy person. Things probably wonât work out if Atticus needs to be touched. Rowan isnât truly expecting things to work out anyway. He has too much baggage and thereâs too much about him to make a person despise him.
âI tend to lash out when people touch me unexpectedly.â Rowan explains, apologising for things he hasnât even done yet. âHonestly, Iâm surprised I didnât punch you the other night when you grabbed my arm. Iâm glad I didnât, but Iâm not usually in control of myself. I strike out without realising. Iâll try not to, but youâre safer if you donât touch me.â
Rowan doesnât know much about other Underworlds, or about mythologies other than his own. Heâd thought about looking up Izanami the other night after Atticus had mentioned them, but hadnât known how to spell it and hadnât wanted to ask Elise. Maybe heâll just google Japanese Underworld and hope for the best.
âIâŚâ Rowan wants to say that heâs still uncomfortable, that he canât even tell his queer best friends that heâs gay, but instead he nods. âOkay. So Iâm okay in your apartment then.â He canât promise he wonât freak out if Yashira is there, but he could at least try.
âIâll try to keep that in mind.â Atticus is surprised to hear how close Rowan couldâve come to punching him the other night, but it didnât happen so he doesnât stay concerned with it for long. âJust, uh, could you try not to hit me if I forget?â He tended to get excited and touch people without thinking about it, so it seemed inevitable that heâd fuck up at some point.Â
Atticus smiles at the small step Rowan agrees to take. âGreat. Thatâs wonderful.â He didnât really want to tell Yashira not to look at Rowan - heâs made too much progress at getting her comfortable facing him to risk setting her back - but he has no doubts that Yashiraâll struggle to look at Rowan regardless after the other night.

Cas gasps at the sudden pain blossoming across his chin. Its not the worst punch Cas has ever received, but it still hurts. He rubs at his chin but there doesnât seem to be any real damage. It was certainly going to bruise though.
âIâm alright.â He tells both Zanes. Heâs about to start trying to sooth what he expects to be two panic attacks, but then the other Zane jumps to his defence, putting themself between him and Rowan. Cas gapes, fingers stilling in his Zaneâs hair.
âExcept he didnât meant it as a compliment, did he?â Rowan snarls. âHe was trying to rile me up and he did. I fucking hate people using that word to attack me.â Rowan throws up his hands and stalks over to the kitchen. Its clear he wants to end the conversation there.
âOh.â Cas had only intended to irritate Rowan. He hadnât realised he was crossing a line. He should have, if only heâd thought about it. Rowan had told them before during the group therapy session that he thought heâd hurt someone if they called him girly or pretty. âIâm sorry, man. I forgot your fathââ
âIt doesnât matter.â Rowan cuts him off firmly. âHere.â He tosses and ice pack from the freezer to Cas. Cas grabs it out of the air and presses it to his chin with one hand while stroking his Zaneâs hair with his other.
âAre you okay, darling?â he murmurs to them. âYouâre safe, okay? Youâre safe.â
âHe wasnât trying to attack you,â Zane says. Yes, Cas had been teasing him, but they didnât think he was intentionally trying to be an ass. They didnât exactly have a ton of experience with having friends and casually teasing them, but nothing Cas said felt like he wanted to hurt Rowan. âConsidering the sort of things youâve said, I think his teasing is deserved.âÂ
The other Zaneâs attention flickers between Casâ face and the standoff between Rowan and their other self. They arenât sure what happened in this other world to make themself so much more confident, but itâs amazing to see. âI-I think... R-Rowan has issues with, um, th-that sort of thing, s-so...â
As soon as the words leave their mouth, they curl closer to Cas anxiously. They highly doubt their other self would hurt them or Rowan, but theyâd never been good at standing up to people who feel like authority figures. Even themself apparently. They nod at Casâ words. âY-yeah, Iâm okay. Iâm more concerned about you.âÂ
crossroadsdinerâ:
Rowan nods. Heâs heard a lot about the fae and their rules. Elise likes the mind games and played them well, but sheâd messed up in the beginning and given the Queens her name. Sheâd belonged to the fae until Mick sold his soul for her. Rowan thinks Phaedra kind of did the same for him.
Rowan doesnât want Atticusâ sympathy. He doesnât want Atticus knowing how bad the Underworld had been. He shakes his head. âNah, Iâve never liked being touched. My world was just kind ofâŚâ he shrugs. âDonât worry about it.â Atticus clearly knows Underworlds arenât great places thanks to his roommate. Rowan hopes Yashiraâs experience was more like Phaedraâs and Atticus assumes his was too. Rowan didnât want Atticus knowing he was tortured âstill isâ and questioning why that might be.
He breaths a sigh of relief when he learns Yashira hadnât seen his face. Its stupid of him to be relieved. He shouldnât even be worried about it, but being caught in such a compromising position had terrified him.
âSorry I, uh, acted the way I did. You can talk to her about this but Iâm just, Iâm not ready to be seen in that sort of way with anyone.â Heâs scared to be seen close to a guy, but Rowan struggles to admit that.
Atticus tilts his head, wondering just how true that is and how much was just to avoid Atticusâ supposed pity. He supposed it doesnât matter. Rowan didnât want to talk about it, so Atticus wonât push. âWell, Iâve always been a touchy person so please, feel free to tell me if I do something you arenât comfortable with.âÂ
He shrugs. âSheâs... based on what sheâs given me and what the myths say, I think she was taught to never look at Izanami, so when you freaked out... itâs still an instinct for her to look away.â He isnât sure why he feels the need to explain that, but itâs nothing Rowan couldnât piece together for himself if he looked up the tales of Yomi. âAnyway, if thereâs anyone you donât have to worry about, itâs her.â She still struggled to look directly at him sometimes and theyâve known each other for years.
