I wrote a master’s thesis on intentionally single people, and the number of them that said in various ways, “I didn’t know not dating people was even an option at first” was absolutely tragic. They honestly thought they had no choice and it never occurred to them that opting out was even a possibility available to them.  

People honestly believe these are life experience you are required to have AND THEY ARE NOT.

First Mate does not mean "first person to join the crew", it is an officer ranked just below the captain. Not only that, but first mate isn't even a pirate role, it's used for merchant ships.

Nowhere in canon does it ever even suggest Zoro is a first mate or, god forbid, a vice captain. Ever single Zoro introduction card lists him as just "swordsman". That's his job. Every canon vice captain IS labeled as a vice captain, and it's only a scant few characters because it's a heavy role to bear.

Despite Luffy being Captain, the act of decision making is communal. No one's opinion ways heavier than another. What Luffy has is the power to have the final say, to finalize the decision. There is no defacto authority when Luffy is gone, they still do that communal decision process and they leave it up to whoever is best suited to the occasion. Nearly every crew member at some point has called the shots. They trust each other's judgements.

I think there is an inherent romanticism to their relationship that’s developed over the years for sure (whether intended or not). its obvious that all the strawhats would lay down their lives for luffy, but zoro’s goals have so blatantly and explicitly shifted. going from someone who said luffy would have to slit his own belly if being his swordsman made him stray from that ambition, to ‘what’s the point of that ambition if my captain is not alongside me?’ while it’s technically filler, zoro says to kaido if he sends luffy to hell then he’s going to bc he’s rather die alongside him than live without him.
