hello, thank you for asking; one of the first things we hear about penelope in the odyssey (book 2) is that she's lied to the suitors for the three years they've been in ithaca — she told them she was weaving a shroud for her father-in-law's burial and couldn't choose one of them to marry until it was finished, but was exposed later for unraveling her work in secret by night. we learn this from the suitors themselves, who publicize it during a council meeting. penelope herself tells this story to a disguised odysseus later (book 19), at least partly as a ploy to get him to reveal more of his story. in the same breath, she says the gods have destroyed her beauty, strength, and status; she claims she can't deal with beggars, while dealing with him. she only speaks to the suitors through a veil. in scholarship, she's famous for being opaque, because the poet so rarely tells us what she's thinking, even why she does something as crucial as setting up the bow contest. no one knows her.
