In renaissance art, nudes were often idealized depictions of the human body. This imagery goes back to antiquity. Greek and Roman statues featured hairless women which Renaissance artists later emulated (men’s statues sometimes had pubic hair carved into the body). Not only are women missing pubic hair in early modern art but leg and arm hair is conspicuously absent. Many artists used models, but they still created an often unrealistic version of nudity for women and men.
