So we finally decided on a script to film, but then the weather got cold. I mean, not wanting our actors to get super sick by filming a river scene in chilly weather is a pretty good reason not to film, but it sucks that we have to choose a different script now.

You would think that the most important part of production would be the writing, or the shooting, or the editing, but they aren’t (though they’re all very important too). The most important part is organization. Your preproduction should be organized. The production assistant’s notes should be organized. Your footage should be organized. Put in the effort, and both project efficiency and crew communication will be that much better as a result!

Word of advice for aspiring directors out there: Don’t talk when the camera is rolling. Even if the mic is far away, there’s the chance it’ll pick you up, so unless you’re absolutely sure it can’t hear you, keep it in until you cut. You just gotta let the actor do their thing, and give them notes afterwards. Trust me, your editor will appreciate it.
