I really like when child characters experiment with cruelty as like, a developmental stage and a response to their environment rather than as foreshadowing of villainy to come. Often children will be written as doing something awful and that’s it, that’s their moral event horizon, we’re supposed to understand that they’re Bad Forever and can only get worse.

My toddler son spent some time recently experimenting with Being An Asshole. Very thoughtfully walking up to his sister, biting her, seeing her reaction, biting dad, biting the couch, if he could write he'd be taking notes.

I think we should have kids invent their own religion around age 8. Just keep them siloed from the adult stuff and allowed to read weird shit and see what happens

My second grade class at a Christian school invented a cult that worshipped clumps of grass so I think kids just do this regardless

Fewer than 40 pages into Le Morte d'Arthur, Merlin has TWICE magically disguised himself to give tidings to Arthur. And both times when Arthur is like "well who are you that I should listen?" To which Merlin is immediately like "Tis I, Merlin" and Arthur is like ah you again you silly wizard. Like. Are the disguises just for fun.

I think people did more weird stuff in the past because they didn't have radio/TV/Internet.

Look. I know how this makes me sound. But they absolutely should have been barefoot in star trek. If you LIVE inside there's no reason to ever wear shoes! What are you protecting your feet from, the floors are carpeted! They should have special shoes they put on before teleport

can not recommend letting your child do a big scream when they are frustrated enough. Just straight up ask them like "hey do you need to do a big scream?" And if they say yes let cover your ears and say okay GO and let them scream because you know what eventually when you're really frustrated your little person with your face is gonna look at you with their ears covered and yell "HEY DO YOU NEED TA DO A BIG SCHREAM?!" and you can just... do a big scream and it won't scare them and you will feel better too

Hey this is literally great advice for anyone just warn the people around you that you need to do a big schream and do it, so they will do it back and it is very cathartic

Sometimes when the kids are going nuts and I'm losing my mind we do Family Screaming Time. Somehow it feels better to participate.
