Clay facial reconstructions/photos of three unidentified victims of the Green River Killer.

The King County Sheriff's Office released Tuesday facial reconstruction photos of three victims of the Green River serial killer who, detectives said, they were unable to identify during the decades-long investigation.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children performed the facial reconstructions in clay.

Gary Ridgway, who in 2003 pleaded guilty to 48 of the Green River killings, was unable to provide any information that could help detectives identify the three, but the sheriff's office said Ridgeway did imply that he killed them in the spring or summer of 1983.

Detectives believe the women may have been from out of state.

Gary Ridgway explained to police that he chose to kill prostitutes because they would not be missed:

“Prostitutes were the easiest. I went from hav- ing sex with them to just plain killing them … The young ones stood out more when they talked when they were dying.”

According to his plea-bargain statement,

“I picked prostitutes as my victims because I hate most prostitutes and I did not want to pay them for sex. I also picked prostitutes as victims because they were easy to pick up without being noticed. I knew they would not be reported missing right away, and might never be reported missing. I picked prostitutes be- cause I thought I could kill as many of them as I wanted without getting caught.”
