ok so. the extinction.

I know that im known for being corruption aligned but fun fact Im just as extinction aligned as I am corruption so I have a LOT to say

first. the extinction is not the fear of the end of the world. that is a VERY big misconception. The extinction is fear of what comes after the end of the world.

Peter Lukas explains that the extinction didn't really exist back when people thought the end of the world meant the end of everything(eg. the rapture). The extinction started to form when people could imagine and fear a world-ending event that left something behind.

To dumb it down, the extinction is the fear of an inevitable aftermath. The extinction is not the destruction, but what comes after. It is the dystopia of a broken world. The fear that the world will keep on spinning with or without you.

You could also argue that the extinction is the fear of time. That time will keep on moving and you will be left behind if you can't catch up. The fear that once you die, time will simply keep on going, and humanity will leave you behind.

That is why ai is so well aligned to the extinction(aswell as the stranger, just in different ways), because ai is proof that technology will just get better with time, and you will be replaced by something better, more efficient than you, eventually left behind if you can't catch up.

The fear of a nuclear war/ radioactivity is also heavily extinction aligned simply due to the fact that radiation will stick. After a nuclear disaster, such as a bomb or a chernobyl-type event, radiation can take thousands of years just to be half of its strength. The aftermath of a disaster like that is extremely long.

People will be affected, whether you like it or not. Time will keep on moving, and things will just get worse, and there is nothing you can do about it.

There are so many misconceptions about the extinction but this is just my opinion about what it is at it's core : time will keep on moving, and the world will keep on spinning, with or without you.

Like. Imagine youre a character going through a time loop, right. You meet someone. You become friends with them, maybe. Maybe you actually hate each other. Doesnt matter, because when you loop again, all of that is gone.

The person that you met before doesnt exist. But they do, dont they? You see their face. You hear their voice. They are there, but the version that you saw, that you bonded with, that you loved, that you hated.... doesnt exist. Not anymore

And imagine seeing them die, possibly over and over again in every loop. You see their body, you hear their last words, you see them fade away and then, in the next loop.. they are alive again. But that version you bonded with before died with them. They do not remember you. They do not remember anything. Youre just a stranger to them, even though you might have cried over their body multiple times

And also, if you knew each other before the loop? Thats also fucked up. Imagine seeing your friend die over and over. They dont remember it. They will never remember it. There will always be this wall of separation between you and them now, because they dont remember the loops and you do.

You could laugh with that version of them. You could cry. You could fight. You could even just refuse to interact and none of it will matter anyways, because they will always forget. But not you. You will remember.
