Lister and Rimmer are perfect for engaging in hair play with each other, Lister with his long dreadlocks and Rimmer with his fluffy, unruly hair. It starts off entirely innocent but it’s not long before the feel of one another's hands on their necks leads to — other things…..

in tongue tied, the cat is obviously fabulous and eye catching, but i love watching rimmer and lister cause the actors did not wanna do that lol. Chris barrie is just aggressively looking ahead while craig charles keeps glancing at the camera like he's trying to mentally persuade them to stop this nonsense
........?????????
Even since I've gotten into Red Dwarf again, I have wondered if Lister and Rimmer had been in a more serious sci-fi show like Doctor Who, they would've had a more consistent character arc with lasting personal growth. Doug Naylor's Trilogy Closer book 'The Last Human' explored that in a sense.
yeah I think they would have had better development in a more serious show but comedy-sitcom rules often mean they can’t. I do think both characters were a bit more relaxed with each other by the Dave era of Red Dwarf - less venom in their bickering - and it’s better than nothing but still….
Rimmer in The Inquisitor “My brothers had all the looks…. I’ve just got unruly hair”
Doug Naylor and Robert during their lockdown commentary for Quarantine
“Rimmer looking young and dashing”
“He was a handsome devil”
The show never really decided whether Arnold Rimmer was good looking or not - especially with all the insults regarding his hair and his nose, poor Chris - but Barrie was truly a little Chameleon when it came to his looks and voice talent and the addiction of Ace Rimmer only added to that chameleon talent.
AND THEY WERE ROOMMATES

I sometimes can’t square the fact that Doug Naylor only intended for the Lister/Rimmer kiss in Blue to be for laughs and yet the lead up to that kiss - or as Chris Barrie put it “the foreplay” - came across as so endearing and sweet, like two people dancing around their feelings for one another.
It’s like Lister was subconsciously thinking that if only Rimmer could be more confident, relaxed and a nicer person to be around, then maybe their relationship could be deeper, even romantic.
I’m guessing Doug didn’t see it…
They are so domestic I love them ironing and yapping <3
I sometimes imagine a Lister/Rimmer scenario where, instead of an AU Kochanski ending up on Starbug with the boys, it’s an AU Lister - coming from a world where he and Rimmer are lovers and ending up in one where they aren’t and show no signs of becoming so.
AU Lister goes through all manner of emotions whilst he toys with the idea of telling them the truth about the situation with HIS Rimmer. At the same time, our Rimmer is spooked by the presence of AU Lister, not least because this Lister seems to be more patient and affectionate with him - even when Rimmer is being a smeg head about having TWO Listers to contend with
I imagine the story ending with AU Lister giving Rimmer a gentle kiss in front of everyone before departing back to his own universe, a kiss that surprises our Lister - not least because Rimmer seems to enjoy the kiss rather than pull away.
Maybe AU Lister was dropping that hint after all…..
From facebook. I love this episode so much. 🤣

I like to think Holly keeps messing with the program for Rimmer's hair and that's why it is usually so different in each episode.
Just a little Rimmer / Rimster ramble after watching Only the Good as a random episode
The Rimmer who we see from Back to Earth onwards has to be OG Rimmer as Doug Naylor says - the original one from series 1-7 - otherwise the moonlight scene in 'The Promised Land' isn't quite as effective or makes as much sense. Lister has to be talking to the Rimmer who's been with him all these years, otherwise these two people don't have the same experiences together and Lister would effectively be talking to a Rimmer who's not grown alongside him.
Also, the show shouldn't be treating Rimmer as a disposable character, otherwise it could mean he's less sentient than certainly Kryten and maybe Holly too - two other forms of AI. Lister has put his life on the line for 'his' Rimmer a couple of times - most notably Terrorform - and if Rimmer was just a non-sentient computer program, well what's the point of risking himself and Kryten and the Cat in the process of rescuing him?
And I don't like the idea that OG Rimmer may have died not long after becoming Ace - an idea I never really liked in the first place - because the original Ace (the one we first met in Dimension Jump) should have remained a character in his own right, created because his childhood had a 'sliding doors' moment which our Rimmer didn't..
I like to believe that nano-Rimmer somehow survived, however you want to head-canon it. The ending did seem a bit cruel, not least because it's makes it seem like Lister and the others just abandoned him and when you consider that Lister and nano-Rimmer seemed to get along quite well (mostly) it makes that abandonment even worse. And points off the series as a whole for Doug not really exploring how Lister felt about Nano-Rimmer vs OG Rimmer - or indeed how Lister felt about being around a ship full of people full stop - as well as for a few of the more inappropriate sex jokes
The cat does get one of his best scenes in this episode, where he’s deliberately trying to get punched in order to get into the medical bay where Lister and the others are but ultimately fails.
