A guide to my early 3D indie games (and some 2D ones) I made with Game Maker 6 when I was a kid in school.
Simulating Interstellar Travel
To make the star field effect, each star is a white ‘ellipsoid’ drawn using the Game Maker d3d functions. The Y dimension of the ellipsoids call the global ‘shipvelocity’ variable, so they essentially stretch along the Y axis depending on how fast we are travelling through space. Very simple, but it already looks convincing.
I want you to be able to walk around the entire ship without restrictions. No doors that refuse to open! It would be cool to have lots of control panels that do real things that impact the gameplay experience. For instance, I’m thinking about panels where you can trigger ship alerts, fire weapons, traverse to different areas of space… who knows where the limits are?
I was developing this city sim in #gamemaker version 7 around 2008-09. Was never finished but possibly worth another look? #indiedev #gamedevelopment
“Utopia Unlimited will be a cross between SimCity, City Life and Nation Sates. Presented by the attractive 3D drawing features in Game Maker 7, the player can design a sprawling metropolis and manage it. Every city needs basic utilities including water, power, transportation and emergency services. Any good city needs a good healthcare system and a respectable education system. Other buildings that can improve your city are venues, parks, landmarks and civil buildings.“

Time to work on something new!
Still using GM Studio 1.4, but this time we’re going for a first person game set on an isolated starship. I always really wanted to make something with retro styled science fiction visuals.
I haven’t used any shaders or extensions yet, just plain d3d functions. Everything is a floor, a wall, a block or a cylinder - the usual. It feels a bit like an early Quake map, but it’s fun to move around!
I’ll post further details about the game itself in the next few weeks and months. No name or release date confirmed yet.
Total Anarchy lives on!
Perhaps one day this will get finished.
Large swaths of development on this have been more or less completed in these last six months. The game world is starting to feel like it’s coming together: cars feel nice and solid; guns heavy and dangerous; police hard to evade; parts of the map becoming pretty... On the other hand, this is only the beginning of a fresh start. Many things to potentially go wrong or be forcefully left out. Finding increasingly strange ways of pushing Game Maker’s limitations. Frame rates could be better, but my machine is a 6 year old laptop with integrated graphics so I don’t know what I should expect.
Fortunately, I hope that in a few more months I can begin posting testing demos - but not until that represents how fun I hope the final game will become.
Improvements over autumn:
60fps; motion along busy highways much smoother.
Game now detects resolution and sets correct aspect ratio.
8 directional movement with 360 degree aiming; on foot combat feels more like Hotline Miami than GTA:2.
Brand new colour palette, all cars and pedestrians HD remastered and 3D models now have a ‘cel’ border.
Police AI ridiculously chaotic, aggressive and hard to get away from.
Player can now jump over and on top of obstacles. You can also now hide behind cars to take cover or shoot back at enemies.
Instant loading between city and interiors.
NPC generation reconfigured to make a busier and noisier city.
Implementing a branch dialogue system for deep conversations and dealings with NPCs.
Starting the conversion to Game Maker Studio. I was dreading this, but it’s coming along surprisingly well.
Time to start again!

Screenshots from early 2016.
16:9 is here :D
I’ve been implementing a more vibrant colour palette throughout 2014.
Good ol' Poser 6 for character renders. I was writing out five different playable classes. Spy, bounty hunter, thief, gangster and smuggler. Spies play for information, hunters for assassinations, thieves get the best cars, gangsters the best weapons and smugglers the best trading/charisma bonuses.
Incorporating further RPG elements as development continues.
A few more shots. Actually, these were taken for debugging purposes.

Three interconnecting character story arcs
From January 2014.
Emily - Easily the smartest of our three protagonists. Her father, Devan is a morally questionable individual but the two still have a rapport, despite Emily’s decision to distance herself from the Murdoch family and join the armed forces. Emily’s records suggest that she is a natural sharpshooter and is rather adept in stealth tactics. While never involving herself in the brutal European crusades, Emily saw plenty of action during the ‘French Inquisition’ of 2033. Emily, horrified by the waste of human life, vows to end her part in the fighting. Shortly afterwards, she receives a message from her father in Pavilion City informing of her Mother’s death as a result of a local gang hit. We never find out who the killer is, or whether Emily’s Mother was a specific target or whether this was a random attack (gangs often kill and plunder from the visibly rich.)
Emily has little interest in money or power but has a strong sense of justice. She initially returns to Pavilion City to find out who killed her Mother but quickly becomes drawn into her father’s affairs. Devan knows how useful she can be in protecting his chain of lavish nightclubs, now under serious threat from the VDF (Venom Dog Families) and the HHA (Hangleton Horror Alliance.) Emily knows she is being used for her skills but before she can take action, Devan is killed in a terrorist attack. Shortly afterwards, the entire Murdoch empire is reduced to ruins by an air raid on Pavilion City. Bitter and confused, Emily sets her sights on Viceroy Wanderstock, rumoured to have sold out Pavilion City, disabling the city defences and allowing the air raid to take place whilst in hiding. The PLM offer Emily the chance to take on Wanderstock although she refuses to affiliate herself with the ragtag group of revolutionaries, believing one of their members responsible for the death of her father.
Holtz - A complicated man. Self serving and merciless, Stefan Holtzclaw has a shady past involving the atrocious European crusades. An expert in heavy weapons and advanced military equipment, Holtz always has access to plenty of firepower. Holtz recognises that wealth often equals survival in 21st century England and makes a living running illegal arms across the channel for underground revolutionary groups including the PLM. One such mission at Black Rock Marina goes disastrously wrong as the authorities are tipped off. Holtz barely escapes, his accounts frozen and his ID made invalid. Regine Cooper, a secret service agent, deliberately keeps Holtz alive and uses him as a mercenary in Pavilion City to carry out unofficial duties. Holtz also rediscovers Leslie Merrow, an old associate from the ‘golden days’ of gun running. Leslie offers Holtz a new ID and a lot of money in exchange for information retrieval on advanced military hardware arriving at Pavilion City Station.
In the confusion following the unexpected air raid on Pavilion City, Holtz is recruited by the PLM to help investigate. It transpires that Viceroy Wanderstock has secretly defected to the BRIC coalition and allowed the air raid to take place. With the government seemingly unable or unwilling to expose Wanderstock themselves, the PLM decide to eradicate Wanderstock and his influence from Pavilion City. Holtz is tasked with obtaining and planting heavy explosives around the fortified city hall. Upon their detonation, soldiers of the PLM (and Emily Murdoch) are able to storm the building and dispose of Wanderstock.
Tommy - Rather than getting involved on the frontlines, the younger Tommy Renzella has suffered being brought up in gang territory. He never knew his Father and his Mother and Sister were taken away in the night during his childhood. A close friend of his was Albrecht Sirilli who would later become the leader of the VDF. The VDF was Tommy’s only family during his formative years although he decided to try and escape the constant violence (which he perceived as wore at home) and try and find a new life in New Verago, the ‘city of envy.’ Apparently this didn’t go so well, as we find Tommy in Lewes prison some years later serving a life sentence. A riot allows him to escape, steal a watercraft and head back to the south coast (the only other life he knows.) To him, Pavilion City is now somehow even worse than how he remembers it. The VDF has lost much of its territory to the HHA and many of his old friends have been killed over the years. Tommy reluctantly rejoins the VDF, accepting jobs from Sirilli who rewards him with a flat and some money. Things get ugly very quickly after Tommy agrees to help the VDF storm Pavilion City Station and acquire a significant amount of military hardware and other rare commodities from an armoured train. Tommy is taken aback by the VDF’s willingness to let innocent bystanders die in the chaos. Sirilli dismisses this as ‘collateral damage’ and this puts a strain on his and Tommy’s relationship. Before the VDF can fully enjoy the benefits of their newly acquired goods, Pavilion City is nearly flattened during a surprise air raid. Tommy attempts to rush a critically wounded Sirilli to the hospital but the staff refuse to treat him as his ID doesn’t permit healthcare. As Sirilli dies, he proclaims Tommy the new leader of the VDF (or what’s left of it.) As it becomes apparent that the common enemy of the people is Viceroy Wanderstock, who allowed thousands to die by defecting to the BRIC coalition, Tommy uses his leadership to make peace with the HHA’s leader, Nik Braxton. Braxton agrees to cease hostilities, on the condition that Tommy kills Wanderstock. Before he can do so, city hall is captured by the PLM and Wanderstock killed by Emily Murdoch. Not knowing what to do next, Tommy steals Wanderstock’s body and delivers it directly to Braxton. The two gang leaders agree that there is too much violence in their time and turn their attention to rebuilding their communities.
Various stages of underground map planning. The yellow areas are meant to be hard to access but contain some secrets and Easter eggs. Not sure on the particulars with the top down airport. Might have to model some planes. It would be fun to have a runway to perform stunts on though.
