forgive me op but you reminded me of how much i love this man so i need to rant a bit about novel!frank specifically because he's somehow extra funny (and unwell). like, on stage i've seen actors play with it differently, but in the book he very much Knows. and has Known the whole time. if he's not 100% certain in the beginning he surely is after the body is found. which leads to some of my favorite moments, like the morning after the ball, when he calls the narrator to check on her and they have an exchange that pretty much goes like:
i: don't worry frank, all this has helped me figure out something about maxim and rebecca
frank, internally: shit shit shit she knows i shouldn't have given her that super vague speech about modesty in women it was too much what do i do now how do i save maxim how-
i: he never loved me, he still loves rebecca
frank: ... can i come talk to you?
and then she hangs up on him, but i do wonder what he would have told her if she'd let him come up. he had to practically force himself to give that speech when he saw how inferior she felt, and later on when he sort of guesses maxim told her something he still refuses to properly address the situation out of fear for him, but maybe if he'd seen how badly she felt... i doubt he would have let something substantial slip, but who knows. and another wonderful moment is when favell attempts blackmail, maxim is trying to bluff his way out of it by raving about how he has nothing to be blackmailed about and frank just interrupts with "don't mind him favell, how much money do you want?". and that's also when max himself finally realizes he couldn't fool frank. it speaks to maxim's mental state that he really thought he could, because. come on. rebecca had even tried to seduce him. yet he and max never really speak about what happened ever, because "communally repressed trauma™️" and class keeping them just a step too apart and so on. the stress this man must have been under when they went to see dr. baker... so yeah i hope the de winters at the very least keep an eye on him post-fire because all that very much was not in his contract, though in true emotionally repressed fashion he would insist it was.
