full bio
Gabriela was born on a stormy night o a woman who felt trapped by the idea of being a mother and a father who was over the moon. Marianne, at the tender age of 19, dreamt of adventures and late nights, and being a mother didnât fall into either of those categories. The pregnancy was unexpected and the mistake had been to tell her religious parents who refused to see any other alternative than to accept the situation at hand and welcome the new life. And she did, for two days, before she left the child with her father and jumped a greyhound bus towards an unknown destination. While her mother came and went from her life until she was ten, she disappeared after that without any further contact.
Gabiâs father remarried and her stepmother was the mother sheâd needed and accepted. Her childhood was as pleasant as one would expect with two parents who worked hard and were constantly busy. The adventurous side from her mother never got quenched and the school trips her parents could afford did little to help either. Her fatherâs worse fear threatened to come true at the idea of losing his daughter to the world much like the woman heâd once loved. But, he understood that Gabriela was not her mother and when she graduated, Gabi set out on her first adventure in europe. She was hooked immediately, and did odd jobs as she went along to pay for her trips. Within the first months of her second year of backpacking, she received a call that her father had fallen ill.
She returned home, leaving her friends and a man sheâd fallen in love with to come and help her father who had been advanced in his illness. Gabi watched as her stepmother, a nurse, took care of her fatherâs hospice care in house until he passed away. It was the wake up call she needed to set herself up for a future and within two months after his passing, she began nursing school. The money he had left behind helped pay for her school, setting her up to excel in the hopes of making him proud. Less than a year after she began her nursing career, her mother-in-law was diagnosed with terminal cancer as well. As she had helped her father, Gabi began the process of being her in-home caretaker. The process was tiring and traumatizing for the young nurse who hadnât dealt with her emotions of losing her father properly. Sending her into a dark spiral after burying her mother-in-law.
It has been three years and Gabi still hasnât adjusted well to the loss of her parents. Often finding herself abusing opioids and alcohol in order to get herself through the loss, in addition to racking up a significant debt that she is unable to pay at the present time.
