In order to destroy the barrier, the monsters need a power equivalent to seven human souls. After Chara and before Frisk, six more humans fell into the underground. The following is a breakdown of facts, circumstantial evidence, and unconfirmed theories on the fallen humans.
Including Chara and Frisk, eight humans have fallen into the underground.
Six human souls were taken from the fallen humans.
The souls of the fallen humans are each a different color.
The humans have a power called “determination” in their souls.
“Determination” was extracted from the human souls.
Beyond this, everything must be theorized using evidence.
The fallen humans were children.
In Asriel’s room, the shoe box is filled with an assortment of kids’ shoes.
None of the Dreemurrs, including Asriel, wear shoes. It’s unlikely these shoes belonged to Asriel.
In an interview, Toby Fox referred to the humans as “children.”
The fallen humans had control over the timeline – the power to save, load, and reset.
All humans have determination.
Toriel mentions how she often feels she already knows the fallen humans.
Asgore does not question Frisk’s comments about dying more than once to him.
Determination only brings one back if they are “determined to live.” It’s very likely that the fallen children eventually gave up when fighting Asgore.
Toriel met the fallen humans.
Toriel knows the fate of every fallen human – “They come. They leave. They die.”
Toriel presumably left after Asgore’s declaration of war, considering she only took Chara’s body with her to bury.
The fallen humans fell into the Ruins.
Based on the evidence above, Toriel met all the humans, and she has been locked up in the Ruins since Asgore declared war.
Toriel wants to destroy the Ruins’ exit, so that “no one will ever be able to leave again.”
The fallen humans were killed by Asgore.
Undyne proudly states that “No human has EVER made it past ASGORE!”
Asgore is not perturbed by Frisk’s claims of being killed numerous times.
Each human had a different main trait.
Each human soul is a different color.
The Snowdin Ball Game provides a different trait for each colored flag.
The colored flags correspond with the colors of the human souls.
The pairs of weapons and armor found throughout the underground belonged to the fallen humans.
While Toy Knife and Ribbon don’t have any obvious connection, the other item pairs have a theme. Example: Tough Glove and Manly Bandana are for a fighter. Old Tutu and Ballet Shoes are for a ballerina.
Bullets in the shape of these weapons appear in the human soul segments of Photoshop Flowey’s fight.
Toy Knife appears for light blue. Tough Glove appears for orange. Ballet Shoes appear for blue. Torn Notebook appears for purple. Burnt Pan appears for green. Empty Gun appears for yellow.
The appearance of the weapons in the underground matches the order found in the human soul segments in Photoshop Flowey’s fight.
The sprites for the weapon-shaped bullets start with “spr_6″.
None of the humans besides Chara and Frisk met Flowey.
Flowey never lost control of the timeline until Frisk fell down.
Evidence supports the idea that the fallen humans had the power to control the timeline.
Flowey hasn’t existed for very long.
Popular but Unconfirmed Theories
“The discarded items are markers of where the fallen humans died.”
According to Toriel, every human came and left her.
The first two items are found in the Ruins. Asgore should not have been able to kill a human inside the Ruins and collect their soul.
It’s possible the items were discarded by the humans for better items.
It’s unlikely the items have stayed in the same spot since they were discarded.
A few of the items are mass produced by shopkeepers, meaning the originals could be elsewhere.
The fallen humans were killed by Asgore.
“The fallen human with the blue soul (Integrity) killed monsters.”
The tutu being dusty is likely from being abandoned and disuse
The item checks can be rather sarcastic.
Chara wouldn’t know the fallen human since they only just woke up thanks to “you.”
No monsters mention any previous killer human.
There is no concrete evidence that Integrity killed monsters.
“The red soul trait is determination.”
Unlike the other colors, red does not have a trait listed in the Snowdin Ball Game.
There is a common misconception that the word “Determination” is in red in the genocide route, but this is never the case.
Determination is the power to change fate and the will to live. It is a physical component inside human souls.
Determination actually has more connection with the color yellow (or gold). This is not to replace it for Justice, but this may be the color of the physical determination that is extracted from the souls.
There is evidence that the red soul’s trait is “being yourself.”
“The humans didn’t have to die to destroy the barrier.”
There is an idea that the fallen humans could destroy the barrier if they were alive.
However, it’s said that “if a huge power, equivalent to seven human SOULs, attacks the barrier… It will be destroyed.”
Aside from magicians, humans “will never know the joy of expressing themselves through magic.”
If it’s true that humans cannot use magic, that means they would not be able to harness this soul power to attack the barrier.
Entry Number 2 reveals that “the barrier is locked by SOUL power.” It’s possible the magicians used human souls as components to create the barrier.
“The fallen humans come back to life after Asriel destroyed the barrier.”
After Asriel’s battle, the coffins are opened.
The sprites are called spr_coffin_open.
However, there is no evidence that the humans came back to life.
Unlike the humans, the monsters didn’t get their souls removed – their whole beings were absorbed. This is presumably why the monsters didn’t perish upon being absorbed.
It’s possible that the bodies were buried while Frisk was sleeping, or the bodies disappeared with the human souls when Asriel returned everyone.
Coming back to life is the most unlikely of possibilities because the humans are gone, no one mentions them, and it’s unlikely the monsters knew how to perfectly preserve human bodies. (There would be no reason for them to do so either.)
There is no evidence for what exactly happened – it’s a loose end with different possibilities.
There is very little known about the other six fallen humans. Their main purpose seems to be plot related: to put significance on Frisk, who’s soul is needed to break the barrier, as well as to provide conflict for Toriel and Asgore, both internally and externally. However, by pairing together the soul trait and items, some characterization can be gleaned. Beyond that, it is left to conjecture.
