- Arenât you a genius?
- Not when it comes to money.
- Why?
- Because I donât value it.
- You donât value⌠money?
- No. Sorry.
âI think there are things more important than moneyâ

âI think weâre done with this conversationâ
He assumes that Spider âfamously from New Yorkâ Man has a house. Idiot
Peter: I donât even have more than one costume
It tore once and I had to stay up until three in the morning sewing it back together
Tony: Just get your butler to do it
Peter: I donât have a butler Tony
Tony: how do you liveâŚ
I also love how he just apologizes for it.
I canât decide if weâre meant to read that last line as sarcastic or just confused
Like
âIâmâŚsorry?
Why are you so horrified by thisâŚ.â
Peter has like⌠ALWAYS been poor. Itâs part if his motivations, initially. And genius doesnât make money appear, whether you value it or not. Like Tony⌠use some critical thinking skills.
Tony: I will not and you cannot make me
This is probably the first time Iâve seen a fictional character admit theyâre bad with money without it being a punchline. âIâm a genius, but Iâm bad with money. Iâm bad with money because I donât value it. Sorry.â That shit is so powerful. Because sure, Spiderman could make money if he wanted- most of the worldâs geniuses are broke because society is skewed against the lower class, but Spiderman has power and inventions and blackmail and if he WANTED to be rich, he COULD be, but he has principals that he values more. He values wealth less than he values the other virtues in his life and I love that. Working class hero
Okay, this has reminded me of a headcanon I carried around for years and now I am going to share it with all of you even though nobody asked.Â
Spider-Man is fighting Doctor Octopus, as tends to happen, and theyâre in mid-rumpus when the White Queen shows up and is all âif you two so much as scratch my building I am going to do TERRIBLE things to youâ.Â
And theyâre both all âoh, okay, uh, fine, we can go the other wayâ and some awkward conversation ensues while Emma is just rifling through their brains as one does when one is an amoral telepath presented with an opportunity.Â
And Emma comes away with two strong impressions, 1) Spider-Man is honourable, kind, stupid and, in fact, Baby, and 2) Otto Octavius is a genius who appears to be Extremely Affordable. So she tracks him down and suggests that they work together and make a shit-ton of money.Â
Otto is not, when she lays out the proposition, opposed to making a shit-ton of money while also being concealed from the authorities by a woman with a lot of investable capital and no scruples whatsoever. He can have a nice lab and all the raw materials he wants and Spider-Man will never interfere, hurray!Â
After this, Emma keeps an eye on the Stupid Spider-Baby, and now and then shows up to his fights with this or that Thwarted Scientist Supervillain to recruit them. Spider-Man is confused by this but heâs all in favour of their getting a chance to Go Legit and Turn Their Lives Around, so okay, heâll go along with this. To a point.
Spider-Man: Youâre notâŚ. killing them, are you? Or brainwashing them? Because I never see them again after you talk to them and I Have Concerns.
White Queen: Theyâre in a lovely private research facility in Massechusetts. If you like I can arrange a tour for your alter-ego.
Spider-Man:⌠my who?Â
White Queen: If you ever get tired of working lousy jobs and saving ungrateful people, Peter Parker has real promise. He could work for me instead.
Spider-Man:⌠I have Even More Concerns.
And then one day Peter gets a letter in the mail from a bank he doesnât have an account with congratulating him on his new account which has more zeroes than he has ever seen on a bank statement before and he is in mid panic-attack when his phone rings.Â
Peter: WHAT
White Queen: Calm down, itâs your cut.Â
Peter: CUT OF WHAT
White Queen: You keep finding morally questionable inventors for me. Theyâre paying off, so hereâs your finderâs fee.Â
Peter: THAT IS TOO MUCH MONEY YOU ARE TRYING TO BRIBE ME OR SOMETHING
White Queen: Itâs five percent.
Peter: âŚ. of what?
White Queen: Of what my private stable of geniuses made for me this quarter.
Peter: âŚ. I do not know how to imagine that much money.Â
White Queen: Well, work on that, because next quarterâs profits are going to be higher.Â
Peter: NeXT quArTeR?
It is *years* before the Stable Of Amoral Geniuses find out that theyâre secretly bankrolling Spider-Man. Peter lives in terror of the IRS finding out that heâs receiving money from supervillains, and gets dragged in by both the Avengers and the Fantastic Four at different times under suspicion of having Somehow Disposed Of assorted supervillains. Fortunately for him, his defense that the White Queen suborned them with money sounds Extremely Plausible.
At some point Jonah finds out that Peterâs getting a quarterly stipend from Frost Enterprises and goes Bananas trying to find out why. Peter comes up with an increasingly desperate series of implausible excuses that make him even more suspicious. Eventually Jonah manages to meet with Emma Frost herself, who looks puzzled and tells him Peter sold a couple of patents.
Jonah: WHY DIDNâT YOU JUST TELL ME YOU SOLD SOMETHING TO THE EVIL WOMAN.
Peter, to whom the idea that his inventions might be worth money came as a complete surprise: ⌠I can honestly say that it never occurred to me to do that.
