Connection to the paranormal: Jason’s father was a true believer, almost poisoning their family with his own beliefs on paranormal. In the end he was just seen as the town crazy who seemed to have suffered from a mental breakdown due to his service in the army. Benjamin himself is a sceptic, though wants to believe.

“It’s not about you or Farris… It’s okay. It makes me think of our good times and how good they felt. Takes me to my happy place.”

Mora took a moment to breathe. Slowly her fists unclenched, letting the frustration go away, and her fingers began rubbing his back comfortingly. “I’m not going to work. Could we try to sleep?”

“You are kissable… And she is kissable… It’s okay”, she said weakly but with sincerity. His heartbeat picked up a notch. With her ear plastered to that spot Mora rubbed her cheek against his chest, closing her eyes, and listening on. “It’s just… I too used to make you smile like she had. And I no longer do. In fact you lose your smile when I enter the room.”

Her hands curled around the material of his clothing, curling into fists.

So what of it? The shrug to her felt like a confirmation and she tried really hard to relax despite her trembling shoulders and tears soaking into Fen’s clothes. Did they really try? Some part of her tried to run from it each day, as she took the long way home, as she stopped by the pie truck to chat with a stranger. But she did try. With all of her little gifts, and walks, and surprises. With all of the smiles and attempts at normal life. Last night Mora was certain she’s done all she could… Now the crippling fear of losing a loved one messed with her head and Mora felt that she could have given him more. That if he wanted it too, they would be able to fight on and eventually win. 

And Fen? The wolf always said he was no good for her, and despite everything he said Mora’s seen little change. Perhaps a part of him never felt like fighting for this to work at all. The only part Mora ever hoped he would work on. But it never felt like Fen even looked in its direction.

With that in mind, Mora knew it was pointless.

“I’ve seen you kiss Farris”, she muttered with her cheek pressed to his chest, listening for his heart beat.

Fenrir tensed up.

Farris, the little mistake he had swayed right into. The mistake he had hoped to forget and bury and never had to come face to face with. To say the kisses were meaningless wouldn’t make any of this better even if it was the truth. The kisses shouldn’t had happened yet he had been weak and needy for something else than this relationship that didn’t make him feel satisfied.

At least trying a little

She frowned, pressing her eyes shut as she clung to his body without an audible response.

“We promised we would try”, she muttered after a while, failing to fight back the tears. No matter how many friends he thought she had, they weren’t nearly as important to her as he got over the years. “I suppose I’m not everything you have either?”

The wolf shrugged. She was his only one if family didn’t count. Though she was part of his family these days...

Mora swallowed hard as more tears rolled down her cheeks. She nodded, but it was a nod so weak it could have been easily mistaken for another shiver. It was then that she realised, the belief that he did was what was making her conflicted.

“ I trust it when you say it”, she spoke, voicing a bit of what was going on inside her head. “But I used to feel it more… I used to feel it… You’re everything I have.”

The fingers tapping on his thigh increased in the rising anxiety before the wolf squeezed his hands to fists. It was starting the be pretty clear where she was trying to go with this talk.

Noticing his erratic little movements Mora understood she made him more nervous than anything else, and spoke again, wiping the tears off her nose with the back of her hand.

“I’m scared because despite all the times we promised to be honest with each other I fear we were not honest enough. Because we don’t talk about how we feel unti the tension becomes unbearable, and I feel like we grow apart every day even though I believe with every bit of my soul that you love me too. Because I try my best to make you smile and it gets harder every day… I’m scared that we’re losing—” Mora swallowed. “That we’re losing each other.”

The difference between what she was fearing and what Fenrir already knew was that they had already lost one another. He had known that for a bit but still having clung to the safety that was their day to day life and routines... The poor girl had tried so hard to keep them together.

Mora did not move from where he sat her down. Wrapped up in a blanket, with the scent of the tea in the air around her, she did not whimper more than what he’s already heard, she did not weep. Her nose did not even get stuffy. The tears simply kept rolling down her cheeks uncontrollably as she watched him, as if awaiting a response.
