Some Project Hail Mary Fanartsđ đ
I adore this movie so so much, it hurts.
You are the bravest human I have ever met.
I really think that Project Hail Mary is truly an important movie to come out at this exact time with all that it going on in the world. Take AI for instance and all the growing dependence on it and its presence in creative works. Then, look at this movie that refused to rely too heavily on CGI or green screen (and the CGI they did do was amazing). They made an intricate puppet and hired five puppeteers. They even had one of them do the voice for the puppet despite not being "famous." They took the time to make a whole space ship to bring authenticity to the movie. So much of this was done out of pure love of film, love of storytelling, and love of art. We need that now more than ever, and to have it in such an instantly popular movie is even better. That's not even to talk about how important the story itself is right now. It shows people coming together in the face of hardship. It shows the power of empathy and hope. It shows people helping each other despite differences and working to save people who haven't done anything for them personally. Ryland Grace has been given no reason to want to help Stratt's mission go through from the way he has been treated, but he does it anyway because humanity at its core is good. Rocky is trying to save his own world, but he doesn't hesitate to help Grace save his own too. They find each other in the face of solitude and are able to connect through their shared mission. They repeatedly choose to help each other even when it isn't in their own best interest, and they both choose not only to save their own world but each other's. It's so hopeful. It's so full of love and sacrifice, and it shows that sacrifice doesn't always have to mean you don't get to live. It's about empathy and helping others, and I think the world needs to hear about that right now. This movie is so important especially in the context of now. It gives me hope. This is a movie that shows that there is hope for humanity and that humanity can be good, and it shows that humanity is necessary in art and film to get a result like this.

thought about them had a breakdown bon appĂŠtit
unfortunately i have a folder full of aroace memes and a deep love for any scientist character, this had to happen
saviors of the universe!!!
What if the eridian space program exploded after Rockyâs return because of their new fascination with space, new knowledge about the cosmos, graces knowledge, and everything ever patented or copyrighted in the United States so as they explore their solar system they send a probe to Earth.
The probe contains lots of information about their technology as well as their culture, and a full translation dictionary even though everything is in both English and eridian. There is also a video they worked very hard on bc they know humans like to look at things and Grace had input on it and insisted his survival and presence be a surprise at the end, but it gets spoiled because in the background of one of the scientists in the lab is a window into Graceâs terrarium and you can see him in there making mediocre sandcastles with a pink bucket and small yellow shovel.
Post-PHM Headcanon: Grace's Eridian students create little constructs as gifts for him. Grace teaches them about Earth beaches/ oceans and they're all amazed. Grace mentions offhand the ways his artificial beach is different to a real beach, like the lack of shells, and within days, his students gift him buckets of hand-made shells to litter his beach. The Eridian equivalent of giving him their drawings to hang up in the classroom.
Grace walks up and down the beach, arranging the shells in the sand, placing them far enough from the waves that they won't get washed away. Rocky grumbles that Grace's house is going to FILLED now because Grace made such a fuss over their gifts, but Grace is smiling so wide it hurts and when one of the shells accidentally gets swept away by the surf, Rocky barrels into the water to rescue it for him

fundamentally a good man
Eva and Graceâs dynamic is so important to me. Theyâre in love platonically. Like, thatâs not a common dynamic. She put the way he likes his coffee into the shipâs computer. He follows her around like a puppy. In the book, she cracks jokes with him and him only. She cares about his opinion. He was the only one she asked about the coma gene, wondering if it was worth it.
Heâs her best friend, and she doesnât even know it. Theyâre so close, that in the book, people think theyâre sleeping together, and poor Grace is so confused because he thought that was his platonic work wife, wdym people think weâre sleeping together, thatâs my person that I crack jokes with and then she glares at me because theyâre not funny.
Sheâs softer with him than anybody else and is only ever vulnerable around him. We see in the movie, heâs the only one who ever gets her to smile, and sometimes even laugh, and then she serenades all of them, but mainly him, and he stares at her with those big, shiny eyes so lovingly, and she points at him when she sings, âeverythingâs gonna be alrightâ, and then she gives him those eyes, so loving.
And then sheâs trying to stop herself from crying when sheâs sending him away because, against her will, heâs become her person, and somewhere along the way, sheâs become his, and they will have forever ended this relationship on bad terms, and nothing can fix that.
Itâs a platonic tragedy. Itâs a platonic love story. This is something we donât get often, or, like, ever, and itâs deep and itâs tragic and itâs sad.
But even after, Evaâs still taking care of him. Packing clothes she knew would bring him comfort. Programming the ship to know how he likes his coffee. And Grace is still watching out for her, speaking to her directly in his video logs, with that same lopsided smile he used to throw her way.
He uses Rockyâs sign for goodbye, and she uses it back, and how did this book and movie give us such a deep platonic friendship because, guys, this NEVER HAPPENS.
Eva and Grace, the platonic male/female friendship of all time.
i listened to the director's commentary last night while i was sceeencapping and they mentioned that when rocky says his name its more like a
"I am Rocky, first of my name, of the east Rockies and my people have been mechanics here for generations" sort of clan introduction than simply his given name
which makes a lot of sense that the little raspberry chirp he makes for grace's name is so short! bc he doesn't know anything about grace yet.
also means that that other ppst about adrian helping to come up with a full name for grace so he can introduce himself as "doctor ryland grace" would be absolutely accurate. as he became more well known, his name would get longer.
ALSO ALSO when rocky says adrian's name-- is he saying like "adrian, second of their name, of the dark caverns and cold stone"
or is he like "adrian, love of my life, most loyal and beautiful and honorable, strongest soul ive ever known"
bc that man gets INTO saying his mate's name, is all im sayin'
not alone
(continuation of this)
scene that shouldnât have altered my brain chemistry but did anyways

Twice, Ryland Grace is faced with the same pivotal decision: to save himself, or to save an entire planet.
The first time:
He is surrounded by white (bravery) and is wearing yellow (cowardice)
The world is telling him to be brave, but he canât, not yet, because he is a coward.
He has lost his identity and autonomy
The decision is already made (he must die)
He is all alone (he doesnât have the bravery gene)
The second time:
He is surrounded by yellow (cowardice) and is wearing white (bravery)
He is in the middle of his namesake: a field of rye. The field is the yellow of cowardice; that is who he was, but he canât be that, not anymore, because he is brave.
You know who you are. Youâll do great.
The decision is already made (Rocky must live)
Rockyâs ball is beside him (he has found someone to be brave for)
the thing that i adore the most about project hail mary is the fact that, after travelling god knows how far, saving multiple worlds, and living on an alien planet, grace ends the film not as some big hero, but as a teacher
its just so nice that the film sits there and says âryland graces job as a teacher is importantâ, because its very common in these kinda films that the protagonist starts off as a teacher purely to give a bit of exposition before the government person shows up and goes âyoure the best (insert science here)ist in the world, and we need your help to save the worldâ or whatever, and i assumed at first that thats what this film was doing as well
but its not
grace starts the film as a teacher, he goes through the film as a teacher, and he ends the film as a teacher. he is a teacher to his students. he is a teacher to the astronauts. he is a teacher to rocky. and at the end of it all, he is a teacher to his students.
ryland grace saves both worlds not because he is some big hero, but because he is a teacher. and his reward at the end of it all is that he gets to keep teaching. and isnt that beautiful
