Darwin’s Children Drew All Over the On The Origin of Species Manuscript

The Cambridge University Library has given the picture above the descriptive name “The Battle of the Fruit and Vegetable Soldiers,” and so indeed it seems to be. Perhaps inspired by the 1839-1842 Anglo-Afghan War, and filtered through the Darwin household’s fascination with plants and gardening?

The second picture above is seemingly directly inspired by their father’s work. Birds are in the act of catching a spider and a gnat or bee, while flowers and a butterfly appear in remarkable detail.

When I worked in fast food for minimum wage, they would yell at us and lecture us about “stealing” fries and burgers (while we had to throw out TONS of food every day) as though the giant billion-dollar corporations of McDonald’s and Sonic couldn’t afford to give their employees something to eat (while not even paying us a living wage).

Now I work at an upscale restaurant (it’s fancy, like celebrities eat there fairly often) and not only do I make WAY better money but they give us 2 free meals a day (eaten on the clock) and they’re GOOD. Today I got baked cod, spring rolls, rice pilaf, stir fry, and mashed potatoes and eggplant. Oh, and free espresso and juice. From this restaurant owned by a local man who is in no way a billionaire.

Understanding that your community and workers are an extension of yourself, your family, your home

Spoiler: it’s nothing. Oh, sure, you can recycle your trash, but that doesn’t mean much when it all ends up getting burned anyway because our economy doesn’t have anywhere near the capacity to deal with the sheer mass of trash, and no interest in doing so. Like, “sure, our company could switch to environmentally friendly packaging, but that’d mean we’d have to change things and it might cost us a whole cent more per article and that’s just not viable you know, so sorry.”

Or, yes, you can absolutely bike to work instead of driving, but your CO2 emissions are nothing against what big companies blow into the atmosphere every second. Nothing.

Or, yes, you can absolutely grow bee-friendly plants in your yard, but that won’t save them.
