Attention non-artists who commission artists: don’t fuckin do this???
Actually had someone do this to me too. Was doing a art stream, it took me over 2 hours to do his inked commission, he got a refund cause ‘it took too long’ that he figured I wasn’t going to do it after I gave him the file.
Don’t do this. Do not.
I’ve had this happen to me with a $350 comic :/ I had already finished it, it was full color, 6 panels and had a full bg in every panel. I was lucky in that I didn’t spend him money yet, but it left me without funds. I’ve also had the above happen to me as well.
Don’t do this shit to artists. We’re people too. Drawing for you is more than a hobby. It’s a job.
Use Paypal Invoices.
I cannot stress this enough. That shit helps A LOT when it comes down to Paypal refunds/disputes. There’s a description box that let’s you put in what the product is/how long it’ll take/yadda yadda, and then there’s another little memo box that only you and paypal can see where you can say it’s a digital commission and doesn’t require shipping (So Donald Mcfuck can’t say that they never got their commission). And there’s also a box for your Terms & Conditions where you can say, if you have any conflicts/want a refund - email me, or you can actually tell the user that this is a digital commission and they won’t be getting a hard copy of it.
ARTISTS. PLEASE USE PAYPAL INVOICES. it will SAVE you. And to: the people who do this to artists – Fuck you. It’s okay if you change your mind and want a refund. But freaking TALK to us and let us know what’s going on. Let us WORK with you.
ALSO A HUGE TIP: Invoices paid will automatically set up a shipping notice which, if not fulfilled, can land you in SERIOUS hot water with PayPal. Since a lot of artists don’t print and ship the commissions, this is a huge problem.
However! Totally manageable. Just go to your PayPal, scroll down to find Seller Preferences
>> Shipping Preferences
>> Display Ship Button. Make sure all the boxes are unchecked. Then you’re all set!
As a big supporter of artists, don’t you ever fucking dare fuck over an artist like that. Like don’t. And if they take their time to do a good job, don’t shit all over them for it! Don’t be a fucking ass hole. Just don’t. These people put a LOT of work and time and effort into their artwork. Just don’t be that guy. Often times these artists aren’t even getting what they deserve in compensation.
I am very grateful my customers have been good to me, but I’m spreading the word.
Very important!
As a new artist, I’m very grateful for this post. Never knew this. Thank you.
Adding that using PP Invoices and removing the shipping option is useful for buyers as well – if it isn’t turned off, PayPal won’t let buyers pay for a commission without submitting their shipping information (ie. personal address), and sometimes you don’t want an artist you’ve commissioned for a digital piece to know where you live!
I commission a lot of art and there are a variety of ways in which I have paid for art before. Though I think the artists I’ve worked with will testify I do pay stuff without making an issue out of it - learn how to send invoices if you want to be sure everything gets sent properly and you’re protected from folks that aren’t as nice as me about payments. The only downside is that I can’t tip if you send invoices. ;-) (I think? Is that possible? I don’t think it is. Haven’t seen an option for that.)
Part 1 of my tutorial on facial diversity. Look for part 2 in a couple weeks!
The photos are used purely for educational purposes. All the rest of the art was created by me.

I cannot tell you how much I just love blades. They are beautiful.
Blades are great because they are functional art. There is both aesthetic purpose and utilitarian purpose behind them. I love that.
Hi Bret! I love your work. I was really inspired by the podcast episode you did lately and I was wondering if you could maybe talk a little bit about how you kept focus when you changed careers. I have such a hard time fighting with my anxiety and keeping my eye on the prize that I was wondering if you went through the same things and how you might have coped. Keep up the incredible work! Thanks!
First, thanks for listening. For those of you who don’t know what we are talking about, the interview is here https://soundcloud.com/creativetrek/e-8-brett-bean-how-a-good-attitude-can-lead-to-great-work/s-kaagl
Focus is tough and there will always be slip ups, but they are both necessary and unavoidable. They let you know if you are on the right track or the wrong track. Your “mediator” just needs to determine which ones are dream based, and which are fear based.
Focus arrives but then can easily dissipate. That’s when fear steps in. Will I never be good enough? What about bills? Letting down my family? They’re all gonna laugh at you! etc etc.
It’s just the way it is. It’s how you DEAL with it that matters. People beat themselves up for having emotions or fear. To me, it’s just part of the game. It’s when you allow them to dictate your life is when you should be mad at yourself. But I allow them to happen. If it’s a particularly bad episode and if I have to, I let myself throw me a pity party. I’m allowed a day for it. Feel bad, mope around, throw over a blanket and play a video game until my eyes bleed….. Pity Party, woohoo, invitation for 1 please….
And then the party is over. Time to get up, attack it, and beat it. In any way I can. Little by little or jumping into the deep end. Just whatever I can tackle. That’s different for everyone.
So we all go through it. I dealt with it how I deal with everything. All pieces of your life get moments. But it’s up to you to dictate how long each moment lasts. Sooner or later, as things get easier to manage, the moments get to last longer (the good), get shorter (the bad), or come back once a year to decimate your ego (the ugly). I realized long ago that any decision that doesn’t deal with bodily harm or injury is fine. You can pretty much reverse anything you decide from a job, where you live, what to eat, or who to trust. You can fix any of that. You just gotta make the effort to re adjust when it’s had it’s moment.
But it happens. Focus on little steps if you are in the middle of one.
You can do this.
If I can and continue to, I know you can too.
Good luck
Cheers,
Bean

Ms. Shawna Mills, aka LazyMills has been on my radar for some time. Hailing from my hometown of NYC, the soft spoken 2D animator/concept designer’s work does a lot of the talking with it’s loud, boisterous and “IDGAF” treatment to shape laws and rules. She’s one of my favorite people working and she’s one of the few ladies of color in animation who has their own voice.
