To be a scientist is to be naive. We are so focused on our search for truth, we fail to consider how few actually want us to find it. But it is always there, whether we see it or not, whether we choose to or not. The truth doesn’t care about our needs or wants. It doesn’t care about our governments, our ideologies, our religions. It will lie in wait for all time. And this, at last, is the gift of Chernobyl. Where I once would fear the cost of truth, now I only ask: “What is the cost of lies?”

I’ll tell you a horror story. I was auditioning for Zeffirelli’s Hamlet, the Mel Gibson Hamlet, and it was about a year after I left drama school. You had to catch a train, I forget which station, and go up to the studios [where] they were doing everybody in half-hour segments. On my journey, there were two people from drama school: Jason Isaacs and James Purefoy. I was auditioning for Horatio but I was not going to play Horatio, I was playing a part that maybe said, “This way, my lord.” And that was it. But, obviously, you can’t audition somebody for that, so they had given me a speech of Horatio’s. [Jason and James] were both auditioning for Laertes - legitimately for Laertes. I was too embarrassed, so I was like “Oh, yeah, yeah, I am auditioning for Horatio.” When we get to the station at the other end, there is a car to pick us up and this guy’s got a clipboard and he’s checking and making sure he’s got everybody. He goes, “Jason Isaacs reading Laertes. James Purefoy reading Laertes as well. Whoops. Maybe I should separate you two. You should come and sit in the front. No? You’ll be alright back there? Right.” And then he goes, “Jared Harris reading Horatio although he cannot be cast in this part.” Jason and James just laughed and teased me so much.
