Witness the Magic Of McCarthy!

My very first crush growing up was Andrew McCarthy. I would watch Pretty In Pink every day after school off of a VHS copy from HBO (I was in 3rd or 4th grade).

The scene where Andy (Molly Ringwald) confronted a playing-with-her-heart Blaine (McCarthy) was always so powerful.

Even MORE powerful than the emotion of that scene was Andrew’s eye and nostril acting. He gives SERIOUS eyeball in his performances. The man needs a facial expression Academy Award.

Is it me, or does Andrew McCarthy’s handwriting look like that of a stroke victim or pre-school student?

Twelve weeks shy of turning 50, McCarthy — an actor, director and award-winning travel writer — is still boyish. His first book, The Longest Way Home: One Man’s Quest for the Courage to Settle Down (Free Press, $26), is being released Tuesday.

It’s part memoir, dealing with his parallel careers in acting and writing, his alcoholism — he’s been sober since 1992, he says — and overcoming his self-doubts and insecurities. And it’s part travelogue about trips to Patagonia, the Amazon and Mt. Kilimanjaro. Over iced tea, he calls it “an internal journey played out externally.” In it, he writes, “Success in acting had given me a persona and a shell of confidence; my travels helped me find myself beneath that persona and fill out that shell with belief. Who’s your favorite New Yorker, living or dead, real or fictional? Martin Dressler, the title character in Stephen Millhauser’s wonderful book.

What’s the best meal you’ve eaten in New York? When I first moved to N.Y. in 1980, I used to go to Ray’s Pizza on Sixth Avenue and 11th Street. It was a very different place than it is today. There used to always be a line out the door. There was an unbelievably thick layer of cheese on top; it took several paper plates to support one slice. I’d get two slices for 75 cents each and sit on the stoop next door. It was a huge and delicious meal.

In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job? When travel writing, I go to cool places and take notes and try to justify that it’s a real job. When acting, I wear makeup and play dress-up and try to justify that it’s a real job.
