Upright: Dorian Gray (The Portrait of Dorian Gray)
Just like Death, the Devil is also a greatly misunderstood card. It represents indulgence, obsession, yielding to temptation and the darker sides of human desire. It often points to illusions of freedom while being chained to destructive behaviors or external influences. It’s about excess, moral corruption, and the surrender to base instincts rather than higher values. Dorian embodies the Devil’s energy of indulgence, succumbing to the pleasures of youth, beauty, and sin, convinced he can escape consequences because the portrait bears them instead. Like the chains in the Devil card, he chooses to remain bound to his desires, mistaking them for freedom. Dorian, like the Devil, is also a seducer, corrupting others around him. One could argue that Lord Henry is the Devil instead of Dorian, but I disagree. Lord Henry acts more like a Devil's advocate; he is responsible for planting the seeds of indulgence and being a bad influence to Dorian, but at the end, he's never had the courage to commit the sins he persuaded Dorian to commit. The Devil can also show up in a reading as a warning that the person must face their own actions and their darkest side head on, which is excatly what led Dorian to his own demise.
Reversed: Frodo Baggins (Lord of the Rings)
People have a tendency of associating Upright cards with "good" meanings and Reversed cards with "bad" ones, but Frodo and the Reverse Devil are here to prove them wrong. The Reversed Devil is about breaking free from chains or oppressive influences. More importantly, it's about resisting temptation at all cost. Frodo's journey is about carrying and destroying the Ring, an object that mirrors the Devil's chains and temptation. The fight isn't easy, but he manages to destroy it in the end, symbolizing liberation from evil's grasp. Unlike those who fall under the Ring’s spell, Frodo constantly recognizes the danger of attachment. This awareness is exactly what the Devil reversed points to: consciousness breaking illusions. The Reversed card doesn't mean temptation isn't there; on the contrary, it suggests hardships in fighting it, keeping a fragile but possible control. By bearing the Ring, Frodo takes on the weight of temptation so that others can remain free.

Upright: Elijah Mikaelson (The Vampire Diaries / The Originals)
Just like Temperance's about restraint and diplomacy, Elijah is constantly the peacemaker along his siblings, especially between Klaus and the rest of the family (we'll get to him later). While his family often given in to their extreme cravings (rage, vengeance, lust for power), Elijah behaves with patience and moderation. He is composed and controlled, and doesn't act on his impulses. Temperance is also about a certain duality, represented by his vampiric nature, being a creature of bloodlust and violence and choosing to behave with reason and compassion. He acknowledges both his shadow and light side, and doesn't let either one dominate him.
Reversed: Klaus Mikaelson (The Vampire Diaries / The Originals)
Elijah and Klaus really are two sides of the same coin. Where Elijah is refined, Klaus is chaotic; where one chooses to respond with diplomacy, the other does it with violence. Temperance Reversed is not exactly about the bad traits Klaus exhibits; it's about a lack of restraint and equilibrium. Klaus takes all of his emotions to an extreme level, his anger, love, vengeance and ambition are never done halfway. He embodies indulgence in his paranoia and need for control. Klaus' actions fracture his closest relationships since he's always at war with himself: whether he chooses to accept it or not, he is deeply sensitive and vulnerable, desperate for love, imposing his will and controlling his family for fear of being abandoned. He rejects balance, swinging from his more human side (like he is when he's with Caroline, Hayley or Camille) to extreme cruelty (notably when he chooses to murder all his hybrids). If Elijah is the angel of Temperance, patiently mixing two waters, Klaus is the spill, the imbalance, the excess, the destructive flood when opposites refuse to unite.

Each stage requires him to let go of his past self, however painful that process is. For Sasuke, this is clearest when he must ultimately let go of his hatred for Itachi, and later his obsession with revenge against Konoha. Just as the Death card promises a dawn after the ending, Sasuke finds new purpose after the war, no longer as an avenger, but as someone walking a path of atonement.
Reversed: Katherine Pierce (The Vampire Diaries)
Just like Upright Death represents transformation, Reversed Death means stagnation, fear of endings and clinging to what should be release. People represented by this card are trapped in cycles, avoiding growth or holding onto illusions of control. Katherine refuses to let go of her manipulative, survival-driven ways. While other characters evolve, Katherine clings to the same patterns of self-preservation at all costs. The reversed Death card speaks to the terror of loss. Katherine embodies this in her refusal to accept her mortality, her humanity, or the idea that her reign as a powerful, untouchable vampire might end. She fights death itself, literally and symbolically, over and over. Where upright Death brings rebirth after endings, Katherine’s reversed arc shows what happens when you resist that cycle. Her downfall is a direct result of her inability to change, and she becomes consumed by the very survival instincts that once kept her alive.

Upright: Luke Castellan (Percy Jackson and the Olympians)
The Hanged Man has got his hands hidden behind his back, much like Luke's hidden intentiont throughout the first book of the series. Like the card, Luke plays the role of traitor and hero, being seen as a double (maybe triple?) agent. At the end of the first book, he reveals himself as Kronos' agent, and a traitor to the demigods. Then again, at the end of the series, he reveals that he is still secretly loyal to his friends, and never entirely let go of his resentment towards Kronos himself. His hidden intention was not just to destroy Olympus, but to force change, to make the gods acknowledge their neglect. The Hanged Man also symbolizes sacrifice and inner suffering, much like Luke plotting his secret plan, allowing everyone to hate him, and sacrificing himself at the end to defeat Kronos. Ultimately, Luke assumes the martyr figure, his death allowing Percy and the others to triumph at his personal cost.
Reversed: Peter "Wormtail" Pettigrew (Harry Potter)
Two characters represented by the same card, two characters that have betrayed their former friends, two characters that got their redemption at the cost of their lives at the end. So, what's the difference? Luke's actions, even though questionable, were guided by a greater purpose; he actually wanted to make a difference no matter the means necessary. Wormtail did what he did simply out of cowardice, not because he thought Voldemort had a point. Pettigrew constantly refuses to sacrifice himself for others, betraying his friends to preserve his own skin. The Reversed card suggests suspension, much like Peter's behavior. He clings to Voldemort because he's too afraid to stand alone, never truly committing, but never breaking free either. He hides behind others, manipulates situations, and survives by betraying, never by confronting truth. Even his death reflects the Reversed Hanged Man. When the magical hand Voldemort gave him strangles him, it’s a moment where he could have chosen true sacrifice (spare Harry, betray Voldemort), but his hesitation and inability to fully act seals his fate. He dies suspended, trapped by his own cowardice, never transcending.
People represented by the Justice card tend to be textbook lawful good paladins, and no one better to represent that stereotype than everyone's favorite Captain America. Steve is defined by his sense of justice and strong moral compass. He refuses to do things that go against his principles, even when the easier path would be just to do so or stay silent. He also constantly takes responsibility by his actions and decisions, and tries his hardest to protect the weak and innocent. He doesn't shy away from the weight of his choices, even when it drifts him apart from his allies. Justice upright is not about blind duty though, it's about equilibrium, seen in how well Steve balances his loyalty to his country with loyalty to his own moral principles. In essence, Steve Rogers is the Justice archetype: the living embodiment of accountability, clarity, and moral truth, using both shield and judgment to protect the innocent and call others to higher standards.
Reversed: John Kramer (Saw)
Instead of truth and fairness, Reverse Justice represents bias, manipulation and/or using justice as a mask for cruelty. It points to someone who claims righteousness but avoids seeing their own flaws. In Saw, John believes that he is giving his victims a chance to value life, but his trials are sadistic and stacked against them. He cloaks vengeance and control in the guise of fairness. John also evades responsibility by telling himself that "he doesn't kill anyone", while at the same time creating traps that are almost impossible to escape from. Reverse Justice, like Jigsaw, seeks to inflict suffering in the name of righteousness, with no room for compassion or proportion. He sees himself as a moral teacher, when in reality he is acting out of anger, ego and need for control.
Everyone who plays around with Tarot cards long enough winds up with a “bad” card that they love. I just barely persuaded my husband not to get the Ten of Swords tattooed on his body; traditionally, it shows a corpse with ten swords stuck in their body and means “utter ruin,” but he thought that if it took ten swords to kill you, then you must have put up a pretty good fight.

Upright: Captain Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean)
I really though about putting (Captain!) Jack as a Magician, but at the end, his great acts depended more on luck than pure skill. Jack's entire life is ruled by fortune and misfortune, and just like the Wheel, his luck turns constantly. "Where is Jack?" you might ask, and he could be captaining the Black Pearl, stranded on an island, imprisoned, swimming in treasure, or getting slapped by a prostitute in Tortuga. The Wheel never stops turning, and Jack survives not by controlling fate, but by flowing with it. He embraces change, knowing that resisting it will only lead to ruin. The Wheel also talks about karma, and Jack often reaps the consequences of his trickery, betrayals and bargains, both as rewards and punishments. Also the guy literally has a compass that can point anywhere, follows it and ends up getting what he was looking for.
Reversed: Baudelaire children (A Series of Unfortunate Events)
(Captain!) Jack Sparrow probably made a bargain with some kind of sea demon to steal the luck from someone he will never know, and this someone was the Baudelaire children. Fate is absolutely not in their favor, and these children go through one tragedy after another. Every time things seem to improve a little, the Wheel turns and hits them in the face again. Also, the Reverse Wheel talks about how your own skill doesn't really have an impact on the outcome. No matter how clever or how resourceful they are, they remain stuck in Count Olaf's schemes and the world's indifference, unable to shift the tides in their favor. While Upright Wheel goes with the flow, Reverse Wheel resists what life throws at them, but these efforts only delay or redirect the misfortune rather than break it. While the Upright Wheel can bring lessons, its Reversed version can feel a lot like pointless suffering. The Baudelaires experience this throughout the whole series; they're innocent children punished arbitrarily by an unfair universe that seemingly hates them with a passion.
For this one, I really wanted to avoid the "wise old man" stereotype and not pick obvious characters like Dumbledore or Gandalf, so I figured an introspective 104 year old vampire was the next best thing. Throughout the saga, we see Edward constantly questioning morality, his identity and even his own right to exist, just like the Hermit shining his lantern to illuminate truth, and isolating himself in the process. The Hermit is also seen as a mentor or guiding figure, a role he often assumes in his relationship with Bella, first when she's a human by trying to teach her about the dangers of the world, and then after she's turned, by teaching her how to be a vampire. Finally, another interpretation for the Hermit card that I really like is also related to the lantern in his hands, but this time it means something close to the "light at the end of the tunnel". In the beginning of Twilight, Edward has thought so much about his existence that he is convinced that it has no real meaning besides hurting things. This changes after he meets Bella, even often referring to her as his savior, quite literally being "the light at the end of the tunnel" for him.
Reversed: Shou Tucker (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Great, so now I have to talk about this piece of shit of a character. Shou Tucker twists the wisdom of the Hermit into isolation that breeds delusion and corruption of knowledge. He isolates himself so much that he gets detached from morality, to the point he turns his own daughter into a scientific experiment, simply because he is obsessed with his own research. Reversed Hermit can also represent a misguided or corrupt teacher, something that quite lines up with this motherf- Tucker, being a State Alchemist and holding a position of power, but using it to maintain an inhumane research and preserve his own status rather than helping someone with his knowledge. He avoids responsibility by refusing to face the consequences of his failures, hiding behind self pity and actually believing that what he did was justified. His lantern, a tool made for enlightenment, leads only into darkness.
It's really funny for me how The Hermit seems to fit brooding vampires so well. I mean, I could have written the same post about Edward Cullen, Stefan Salvatore or Louis de Pointe du Lac and nobody would be able to guess who is who.

Rider-Waite Tarot Cards and Spicy Time: Major Arcana
Just like we can learn about someone’s personality from tarot, we can also have an idea about what they look for in a partner, both for relationships and in bed. Under the cut, I’ll explain what can be expected of someone represented by each of the Major Arcana (I’ll try not to make it overly graphic, but if you’re unconfortable with descriptions, then this might not be the post for you).
Keep in mind that some cards may have a more extensive variety of interpretations than others, and that combinations of cards may result into something… different.
0 - The Fool: they're open to basically anything and can be very creative. May be into upskirts and probably isn't straight. Just be careful with some practices because they tend to ignore safety guidelines (like underestimating the importance of lube, for example).
I - The Magician: keep an eye on surrounding cards. This person is either someone charming that somehow makes everything they do feel good... or someone that's just talk. If the former, they probably won't be the first person to catch your attention in the room appearance wise, but they have a certain something about them that attracts people (also they're probably not showers, but know how to use what they have iykwim). If the later, this person will take you to bed, brag about what they used to do with their ex, not do anything to you and then tell around that you had like quintuple orgasms or something. Reeeeally into toys.
II - The High Priestess: this person might look innocent on the outside, but don't be fooled, they're into some weird freaky stuff. They prefer being submissive and enjoy giving head. Slight chance of being someone on the closet.
III - The Empress: if this card is actually referring to a bio woman, DOUBLE YOUR PROTECTION UP OR THERE'S A GOOD CHANCE THEY'LL BE KNOCKED UP. This is a card that has really strong feminine energy, so it might refer to dominant women or mommy kinks on either side. If for some reason this card is pulled on a guy's reading, they might be into feminization to some extent, or like their guys with softer, feminine, features.
IV - The Emperor: really similar to The Empress, but with masculine energy. They like dominating their partner and probably have a daddy kink. If they have a dick, it's a shower. If for some reason this card is pulled on a girl's reading, they might be into butch or muscular women.

VII - The Chariot: car sex. Dreams of joining the mile high club. Likes being in control. If this person could choose their own birthday gift, they would choose road head. They don't have a lot of fantasies of their own, but are open to a lot of stuff if their partner wants. Doesn't really have a preference for sexual partners and doesn't discriminate based on appearance.
VIII - Strength: this person might be a furry or enjoy things like cat ears and tails. Goes to the gym regularly and prefers if their partner also does it. May be into wrestling and will actually take it seriously. They're naturally competitive, so this might show up in the way they have sex. Enjoys domination dynamics and is a switch.
IX - The Hermit: into older partners and some form of humiliation. Might like orgasm denial, handjobs and clothed sex. While not as judgy as the Hierophant, is equally repressed.

XII - The Hanged Man: probably Justice's partner after they've cleaned the glitter off. Into rope play (more elaborate stuff like shibari). Submissive. Enjoys giving head upside down. Likes being choked. Just be careful because they kinda like pushing their limits, so there's a small chance you'll actually end up strangling them. Introduce the concept of a safeword to them, even if you're aware they won't use it.

Also, this is the least recommended person possible for sex, because they don't really understand what consent means. I mean, The Devil may get you traumatized, but at least you'll like it. The Tower might actually prefer if you don't (and not in the whole "i cncd my partner and felt so guilty after i gave flowers and a plushie to them"). They won't straight up assault you, but will probably pretend that they didn't hear you asking them to stop. Not really worth it in my opinion, even more considering that they're not particularly attractive.
XVII - The Star: so... you might actually want to take it slow with this person, they may have some unresolved trauma. After their healing journey, they'll probably be into lighter stuff related to their body, like body worship, foot fetishes and oral. More of a boob person than an ass person. Might like having sex in nature, under a starry sky. You wouldn't immediately tell, but they're kind of hopeless romantics, so do something nice for them once in a while. Also this is not the person for BDSM and they will make you feel bad if you ask them to.
XVIII - The Moon: this person is definitely pansexual and genderfluid. Not even close to monogamous. Actually, they've not ever made a single choice in their life. They enjoy surprising their partner, so be prepared to wake up one day with them giving you head. There are a lot of badass, strong, final girls, but none of them embody Strength like Ripley does. While the card can mean simply brute force (something that Ripley also does not lack of), it is much more about resilience, inner force and self mastery. Aditionally, it is about having compassion and being strong enough to care for yourself and for the weak. On the second movie, Ripley meets Newt, and is determined to make sure she survives, risking her own neck to rescue her multiple times. Also, who else would think of putting the cat first into the cryo hibernation capsule after seeing all your friends die a gruesome death and almost being digested alive themselves? Not a lot of people, I suppose. While facing the xenomorphs, Ripley never panics or loses control, keeping a level head instead, and trying to strategize her way out of danger. She is the sole survivor of the USCSS Nostromo for a reason, refusing to break down even under impossible odds. Finally, Strenght depicts a woman taming a lion (facing the beast, if you prefer), which is exactly what Ripley does with the xenomorphs.
Reversed: Arisu Ryohei (Alice in Borderland)
Now, I must say that this resonates much better for early Season 1 Arisu than for him at the end of the series. After losing his friends in the Hide and Seek game, Arisu collapses emotionally, letting the lion (fear) take control instead of taming it. Even though he is intelligent and surprisingly resourceful, Arisu is not really a natural leader, constantly questioning whether he has what it takes to survive the Borderlands. He can be avoidant, paralyzing instead of acting, letting others, like Usagi and Kuina, carry the weight. Reverse Strength is about being dominated by fear or insecurity instead of facing a scary situation head-on. Even further, it is about one's inner struggles. Arisu's most deadly games happen inside his own mind, while he battles his guilt and hopelessness in order to survive and help others survive.
The Chariot is all about willpower, determination and victory through focused direction. People represented by this card have a clear goal in mind and refuse to be stopped, no matter how hard it gets. After John's wife and dog die, he goes in a revenge rampage that drives him forward relentlessly. Much like The Chariot, John is always balancing the savagery of his actions and his rage vs. his focus on his mission. Even though he is motivated by his past, he is not stuck in it, instead using his trauma to propell him to finish off those who have wronged him. His vendetta might sometimes blur the line between control and obsession, but it always keeps him moving forward.
Reversed: Chloe Price (Life is Strange)
After Rachel disappears, Chloe loses whatever control she had left after being abandoned by Max and launches into an impulsiveness spree. Feeling abandoned by her two best friends and her family, Chloe is unable to find purpose in life and move on. She is angry for being stuck in Arcadia Bay after everyone leaves, and lashes out instead of finding a reason to move on. Her response is to engage in a serious of contradicting and, a lot of times, reckless acts: she skips school to a point where she gets kicked out from it, steals, gets into fights, treats both Joyce and David poorly (being unable to see that, despite not being perfect, they're actually trying to help her) and allegedly even has some risky sexual behaviour. The Chariot may be obssessive sometimes, like how Chloe is about finding out what happened to Rachel, but the card in its Reversed form is about a chaotic, directionless obsession, not really alike the disciplined form it takes in the Upright version. In the end, Chloe is being pulled apart by her grief and her desire to escape Arcadia Bay, not knowing how to proceed and descending into a destructive spiral.

The Lover's card symbolizes deep, genuine love. Finnick and Annie's relationship is one of the few pure and tender things in the brutal world of Panem, and despite the war and trauma, they manage to keep their bond intact. Also, this card represents choices, duality and contradictions. Finnick is shown to be both glamorous and broken, a Capitol favorite and a rebel, a flirt and a devoted partner to Annie. He hides behind the heartthrob mask, only revealing his true self when sharing his trauma and secrets with Katniss. After winning The Hunger Games, Finnick was forced into prostitution by President Snow, being used emotionally and sexually by people, a fate he didn't have much choice against, since refusing to do so meant that the Capitol would murder the people that he loved. He also proves to be a loyal friend, both to the Victors and to Katniss when they realize they can trust each other, even getting to the point of loving her like a sister. From all the characters in the series, Finnick's story is the one that's mostly driven by love, rather than hate.
Reversed: Nana Komatsu (Nana)
If The Lovers represent true, pure love, the Reversed Lovers stand for poor choices in love, disharmony in relationships, toxic partners, dependence and a struggle for connexion. Hachi desperately wants to be loved, which leads her to repeatedly make bad decisions out of loneliness and fear of never finding her soulmate. She has a tendence of forfeiting her own values for others, first by staying with Shoji despite him clearly not wanting her around anymore after he moves, then with Takumi, by staying with him because she believes he can be a provider for her, and that, even though he is abusive and they clearly don't love each other, if she leaves him, she will be alone. She also doesn't see herself as someone worthy of value or being loved, which is why she couldn't bring herself to be with Nobu, believing that he was too good for her. The Reversed Lovers can mean separation or distance in relationships, which is exactly what Hachi does when fearing rejection: she simply avoids the problem and the person altogether, doing this both to Nobu and Nana. In the end, The Reversed Lovers are about projecting a desired to be loved by other people, but not in a healthy way, due to the fact of not being able to love themselves first.
