Some people are of the belief that humans and all other sentient life was made out of good and evil. This would be a very small minded observation in the grand scheme of things but it did help occasionally, as a lot of sentient beings had a thing for categorizing.

Good and evil.

Bad people, good people.

A system that had worked for millenia. Morality, philosophy, all much older than space travel. Much older than the knowledge of other life out there. One could theorize that it was inherently human, good and bad. One could think that aliens would be too enlightened to believe in small minded observations. In reality, as small minded as it was, it worked. It was easy.
