full offense but as a survivor of severe emotional abuse it actively fucks me UP that so many of you are so aggressive about defending sonia and myra and deciding to die on this hill of arguing that they’re not abusive/toxic. like it’s amazing to me that THAT Is the discourse some people want to contribute to. do u not hear yourselves? im so confused??? what compells you to be like “ah yes………..the character that intentionally makes eddie cry and has given him fake medicine and is racist and sexist and homophobic….that’s the one i want to defend…”

if you have to literally try so hard and dissect the text to be like “well see in THIS sentence it’s ambiguous as to if myra is really being abusive or if eddie’s just projecting” …then….it’s not that ambiguous im sorry?? you literally sound like someone going “i mean she didn’t HIT him so is that really abuse?? debatable!!” like do you not see?? how???? eddie reacts to his mother and to his wife??? lmfao what the FUUUCK

like if myra and sonia weren’t abusive or toxic all you’d have to go is: “there’s literally no contextual proof of that” & that would be it that’d be the end of your argument.

but you can’t do that because there’s mountains of proof. so? stop? there’s nothing to “interpret” they’re literally just fucked up people in eddie’s life. they are WRITTEN to be disliked they are WRITTEN to be abusive/toxic/unhealthy.

and regardless of your stance on myra being “abusive” vs “toxic” doesn’t really matter cause at the end of the day she repeats eddie’s cycle of abuse and is genuinely horrible to him regardless of what degree you consider that shittiness (i do think there are valid arguments on both sides as to her being abusive vs toxic- i personally believe she’s abusive but i understand the perspective from people who think she’s only toxic as well - the important part here is knowing that she’s fucked up and unhealthy for eddie here).

she literally uses a common abuse manipulation technique known as playing The Victim wherein she’s the one yelling at him & being horrendous but the moment he stands up for himself she’s shriveling up and acting like he was just the one throwing a full scale tantrum (”Oh myra was just scared!!” that’s not an excuse for her behavior in this scene!!!!! also with eddie’s reaction it’s PRETTY CLEARLY IMPLIED THIS ISN’T UNCOMMON BEHAVIOR!!! he’s not SURPRISED she’s acting like this).

My abuser has used this technique on me so much as a way to make me feel crushing guilt so I won’t leave them/feel like I was the one who is in the wrong. like eddie wanting to break up with myra before proposing to her and then caving into doing proposing anyway is painfully relatable and exactly what it feels like to be stuck with an emotionally abusive/toxic person.

the whole part of eddie feeling like he PHYSICALLY BEAT HIS WIFE because he simply told her to stop screaming at him is REALLY UPSETTING and actually a huge red flag. if you ever feel guilty or upset for telling someone that they are upsetting you / hurting you then THEY ARE BEING ABUSIVE/TOXIC.

“eddie projects his mom onto her!” yes but like ya’ll realize there’s literally only a couple of pages we get from myra & here’s really only SO MUCH you can defend before you just kind of sound like you’re grabbing at straws. he also doesn’t project as much as i see some people say he does & a lot of that projection is more or less about her looks or things like him spending a lot of money on the stereo system (which, by the way, he actively counters those projecting thoughts pretty quickly with “that’s not fair, i know that’s not myra doing that that’s just me”)

he also actively acknowledges that she doesn’t seem to be intentionally crying the way his mother used to so clearly he’s aware of the differences but that doesn’t make them any less shitty? this is clearly something he thinks about routinely and he seems to be self-aware enough to try and determine the differences between how he sees her as Myra vs how he sees her as Sonia. No one ever seems to want to acknowledge that in their weird Myra-defense masturbation sessions tho

ya’ll sound like abuse apologists ok (i won’t even crack into  how some of you sound when defending sonia because sonia is 100% abusive and atrocious and there’s no evidence to suggest otherwise!! she’s also EXTREMELY racist, homophobic, and sexist so people defending her in addition to the abuse thing is so fucking concerning like yall realize she doesnt even want eddie listening to black musicians because shes THAT racist? she literally sneers at the LGBT+ people in town and calls them “queers” why the FUCK are you defending this piece of shit??)
