I'd like to get you started on the car
The car! Oh my goodness the car!
I have so many thoughts on the car, but I will try to condense them down into a more manageable post.
First things first, disclaimer: I will make this about Chuuya, I'm sorry Dazai.
To me, the car is pretty obviously tied to the idea of escape. Quite literally, it is Dazai's last act before he escapes the mafia, but it is also the door closing on Chuuya's potential to escape into the light. I've said it once and I'll say it one million times more, Chuuya longed for the light, he hoped that Murase would show it to him, show a child who had lived in dark, cold, solitude for so long what it was like to have someone truly care for him. For someone to give him warmth, not in exchange for his ability, but simply because he was a lost child and he deserved to be cared for. Dazai escaped into that light, and when he blew up that car, he made it clear that, symbolically, Chuuya could not follow him into it.
The car also makes me think of their memories together, it was likely the vehicle used to commute to most of their missions together. In destroying it, perhaps Dazai thought he could kill off double black, not necessarily Dazai and Chuuya. The car was practical. Yes, Chuuya cared about it a lot, as he did with most of his possessions, but it didn't have the same emotional significance as a certain other vehicle... when they rode the bike they were closer, physically, but also I like to think it was impractical for missions so when Dazai had to ride on the back of a dead man's motorcycle, it was instead for one of the few moments they pretended to be something like friends; heading to a bar, the arcade, anywhere where they could be teenage idiots, not the infamous mafia duo. So, in exploded the car, to me, Dazai destroyed only half of their bond, the half tied to the mafia, the more emotional half stayed safe and sound in a garage somewhere else.
It's also quite special to me that Dazai decided to sign off in such an explosive way. We don't see Dazai express his emotions very openly, but we know Odasaku's death affected him. To me, the car explosion was a way for him to let those feelings out, instead of letting them eat him alive from the inside as he would have done in the past. Previously, Dazai would have acted upon his emotions in a way that was either destructive towards himself or to other people, by channelling his anger and hurt towards the car (under the guise of one final 'fuck you' to Chuuya- because god forbid he have emotions about any of this) it's his first step towards the light. Sure, Chuuya was hurt emotionally, the car was probably important to him to an extent, but no physical harm was inflicted and really, he could have gone for something far dearer to Chuuya's heart (see aforementioned comments about Albatross's bike), and thus Dazai began his strange roundabout way of acting more on the side of good.
