The smartphone really revolutionized the waiting room. Oh I get 20 minutes to look at my phone? Donât mind if I do. The only problem is sometimes when Iâm looking at my phone at home my home starts to feel like a waiting room and I realize it is and Iâm just waiting to die

Easy conversations also serve as a foundation for harder ones. The typical progression is to move from easy, to real, to hard. The easy part is getting to know someone with simple questions about their background and interests. The real conversations begin when there is enough trust to talk about difficult moments in your life, your real hopes and ambitions, your successes and failures. The hard conversations can involve differences of opinion on things that matter â politics, for example, or organized religion, or how best to raise your kids.
The current approach, by contrast, tends to thrust students into âhardâ conversations without ensuring that there is a strong foundation of trust. My worry is that all we are doing is teaching students how to pretend to be empathetic with someone whose political views they find bizarre or offensive, or how to debate someone without calling him names. Thatâs better than nothing, but I doubt it will produce widespread or lasting change, either on campuses or beyond.

Churn, enshittification, slop.
I love potato chips, and I always have. The height of my obsession was in college, when Iâd keep an emergency kettle-cooked bag of barbecue chips in the center console of my Volvo (just in case I got stuck in traffic); Iâd scavenge any and every school event where there was an opportunity to bag some free snacks; and occasionally, Iâd even treat myself to a simple family-sized bag for breakfast. (Before you judgeâworry about your own eating habits.)
...During the Great Depression, and following the sudden death of her husband in 1928, Scudder faced a series of challenges, like struggling to buy insurance for her distribution trucks because she was a woman. At the peak of her career, Scudder was offered $9 million for her company (approximately $170 million today), but she refused, worried the sale would jeopardize her employeesâ work statuses or pay. Instead, she sold the company a few years later for $6 million, and on the condition that everyone she hired would keep their job and wages.

Visually stunning.
Phoebe Bridgers is right. Your phone is bringing bad energy.
And society has struggled to keep up. Is it okay to play a video without headphones? What if itâs a busy street? What about FaceTime? Is that really different from talking to a real person in front of you? What are the rules for behavior?
...Private action to set the rules for behavior is more important in a multicultural society, not less. Having a clear set of rules gives people something tangible to debate over. Everyone knows the discomfort of realizing youâve broken some unwritten rule and struggling to figure out what you did and why. Itâs much better to know that there are strong expectations; then you can decide whether itâs worth it for you to break them.
...More artists should follow Bridgersâ example, but also, more people should get comfortable voicing their opinions. I was sitting in a diner doing some work a few weeks ago, and a couple began watching TV on their iPad. So, I just asked them if they could use headphones, and they turned it off. I did the same at a coffee shop a few days later, and the other person apologized and turned it down.
You shouldnât call the police on people who irritate you. But you also shouldnât act as if the social norms of the most disruptive are natural and immutable. At the very least, you should speak up.
Yeah, itâs very Midwest. People always say if youâre coming down 95 on the west coast, itâs mostly New Yorkers who moved down. And then the Midwest usually populates a lot of my part of Florida. Thereâs a ton of people from Ohio. A lot of people from Texas. People just go there because itâs pretty nice. I think a lot of people move there thinking that theyâre going to change, but they donât really change. Theyâre just in a nicer setting. So, if youâre a redneck from Ohio and you moved there, itâs going to be the same life. Itâs just going to be a little nicer out. Nothing really gets better unless you get better.

But what Nate didn't understand is that The Devil Wears Prada is a romantic comedy about a girl and her career. Andy has to become the assistant to the evil Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) and succeed in her terrible job at Runway by sacrificing her morals, because she knows that she needs the connections. The movie ends with Andy getting a job at the Mirror, a newspaper, on Miranda's recommendation. One year of hell as someone's assistant for the job you want doesn't seem like that bad of a trade, because the core of the movie is Andy's optimistic belief in the power of journalism, and her commitment to the job.

The Laboratory notebook, intended to receive the account of the results of experiments, should always be at hand, as should also pen and ink. All the results worthy of record should be entered at the time the experiments are made, whilst the things themselves are under the eye, and can be re-examined if doubt or difficulty arise. The practice of delaying to note until the end of a train of experiments or to the conclusion of the day, is a bad one, as it then becomes difficult accurately to remember that succession of events. There is a probability also that some important point which may suggest itself during writing, cannot be ascertained by reference to experiment, because of its occurrence to the mind at too late a period.

Competence Porn is a thing.
Slop exists at scale.
Slop remixes culture without understanding it.
Slop has contempt for both creators and audiences.
Slop hides producers from consumers, and vice versa.
Slop exploits parasocial identification with right-wing power.
Slop erodes your sense of the real.
The best way to understand Dokoupilâs CBS Evening News is as an extension of Weissâs media persona, which has been built around a peculiar sort of performance. She brands herself as a heterodox thinker, a champion of free speech, even someone who leans to the left, and then adopts positions that flatter the reactionary oligarch class. She isnât a conservative! She just independently thinks her way to conservative conclusions over and over again. If youâre a rich white man convinced that pronouns and trans athletes are the greatest threats facing America today, Weiss is there to assure you not just that youâre right, but also that your bile is proof of your intellectual fearlessness.
What a fucking disgrace
He starts the week as a stubborn stage resigned to polishing silverware, a task he sees as âpunishment for being ancillary.â
...âTheyâre treating this like going into battle,â Russell adds. âAnd the battle is against everything that can go wrong.â
...âThis is a time where he begins to take not just himself seriously, but he takes his life with his daughter seriously, he takes his job seriously,â Wehde says. âThis is kind of the big pivot point.â
This is my favorite episode of television. At least top 5. Probably top 3.
âHis initial target was a leader of the Church, but he eventually fixated on Abe, who regularly appeared in public, and whose party, the Liberal Democrats, or L.D.P., had dominated Japanese politics since the Second World War. Abe âis not really my enemy,â Yamagami wrote. âHe is simply one of the most influential Unification Church sympathizers in the real world.â For decades, Abeâs faction of the L.D.P. relied on votes and extensive campaign support from the Moonies. Church members served as reliable âspecial forces,â in Moonâs wordsâdoor-knockers and rally-goers. âThey would flood the streets with people handing out postcards, leaflets, or be on a sound truck thatâs just calling out the candidateâs name over and over,â Jeff Kingston, a historian at Temple University, Japan, told me. âWhen it comes to elections, Japan is a really analog place.ââ

Vibe coding, like every new trend coming out of Silicon Valley, turns this process â the entire act of creativity, itself â into a slot machine. One more pull on the AI and maybe it will figure it out for you. You wonât understand how any of it works, of course, or feel particularly proud of what youâve done, but maybe youâll have something.
But as I spent a bit more time there, the sheer weight of it all began to hit me. The hundreds of pallets in that warehouse were just a portion of the thousands of pallets sitting in storage across the country, all containing stuff that consumers and stores didnât want.
Itâs huge. Itâs wasteful. And itâs overwhelming.
