George Genereux Urban Regional Park Reopens Following Wildfire Assessment

SASKATOON, SK — Following a comprehensive post-fire assessment, George Genereux Urban Regional Park has been deemed safe for public use and is once again open to visitors.

Urban Forestry staff, at the request of the Saskatoon Fire Department, inspected the wildfire-affected area and identified 44 small dead trees along park pathways. The overall risk to public safety was determined to be low, and no conditions were found that would warrant continued closure of the park.

While the wildfire left visible impacts across portions of the park, environmental organizations such as the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas view the burned landscape as a unique opportunity to study ecological succession in real time. As native plants, fungi, insects, birds, and mammals gradually return, the site will serve as a living laboratory demonstrating ecosystem resilience, biodiversity recovery, and natural regeneration.

Visitors are reminded that tick populations remain high and precautions are strongly recommended when exploring the park's trails and natural areas.

Please use caution near George Genereux Urban Regional Park as the Saskatoon Fire Department continues monitoring hot spots following the recent grass and brush fire near Highway 7 and Township Road 364.

Dry grass, strong winds, and extreme fire conditions across Saskatchewan mean even a small spark can quickly spread. Residents are reminded to avoid smoking or vaping in parks and trails, properly extinguish cigarettes, avoid open flames, and report suspicious activity or signs of fire immediately.

George Genereux Urban Regional Park is an important naturalized green space supporting birds, pollinators, wildlife habitat, biodiversity, and recreation within Saskatoon’s west side. Emergency crews are actively working to contain the fire and protect surrounding green spaces, infrastructure, and nearby habitats. Smoke may be visible from surrounding neighbourhoods as firefighters manage hot spots and prevent the flames from spreading through dry grasses and brush.

The 148-acre urban regional park is an important naturalized area within Saskatoon’s west side, providing habitat for birds, pollinators, small mammals, and native vegetation. During dry spring conditions, grasslands and brush areas can become highly vulnerable to fast-moving fires, especially during windy weather or periods of low moisture.

Members of the public are encouraged to stay clear of the area while emergency operations continue. Avoiding the site helps ensure public safety and allows firefighters unobstructed access to trails, service roads, and fire response zones.

Grass and brush fires can spread rapidly through naturalized urban areas due to dry vegetation, accumulated plant litter, and changing wind conditions. Firefighters often work quickly to create containment lines, extinguish smouldering vegetation, and monitor surrounding areas for flare-ups.

Urban naturalized parks play an important ecological role by supporting biodiversity, improving air quality, reducing stormwater runoff, and providing opportunities for recreation and environmental education. Protecting these spaces during wildfire or brush fire events is important not only for public safety, but also for maintaining healthy urban ecosystems.

A mother moose and calf have recently been observed near the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the Southwest Off Leash Dog Park. These remarkable wildlife encounters remind us how important Saskatoon’s naturalized green spaces are for biodiversity and wildlife habitat.

If you see moose within city limits, please report sightings to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment at 306-933-6240 or the provincial TIPPS line at 1-800-567-4224. Conservation officers rely on public reports to monitor wildlife movement and determine whether the moose are moving through or remaining in the area.

Please keep a respectful distance, leash dogs, and never approach a mother moose or calf. Together, we can help protect both wildlife and public safety. 🦌🍃

🌎🦉 THE RESULTS ARE IN — SASKATOON SHOWED UP FOR NATURE! 🌿📷

Despite a rare spring snowstorm during the four-day event, Saskatoon citizens documented an incredible: 📷 925 observations 🌿 221 species 👥 49 observers 🔍 135 identifiers

Even more exciting — 12 threatened or endangered species were recorded during the 2026 City Nature Challenge! Species observed included Osprey, Loggerhead Shrike, Western Tiger Salamander, Turkey Vulture, Killdeer, Green Ash, and more.

The most observed species in Saskatoon? 🐦 American Robin led the way, followed by Yellow-rumped Warblers, Dark-eyed Juncos, American Crows, Black-capped Chickadees, and Canada Geese.

Saskatoon outperformed several Prairie cities during extremely challenging weather conditions, proving once again how passionate this community is about biodiversity, citizen science, conservation, and environmental stewardship.

Globally, the City Nature Challenge included: 🌍 754 cities 🌍 61 countries 🌍 3,001,825 observations 🌍 76,422+ documented species

🔥🌲 COMMUNITY CALL FOR HELP — HELP PROTECT OUR URBAN FORESTS 🌲🔥

Following the recent fire discovered May 11 in the west side of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area (RSBBAA), there is growing concern about the fire risks and safety hazards posed by bush shelters and debris structures built within the forest.

A Saskatoon Fire Department firefighter suggested that dismantling these shelters could help prevent future fires and reduce dangers from unstable logs collapsing onto people inside. Thankfully, this was NOT a homeless encampment, but it does highlight how quickly disaster could occur during these extremely dry spring conditions.

Even Meewasin Valley Authority recently posted warnings about the VERY dry conditions across the river valley and natural areas, urging everyone to use extreme caution outdoors.

Currently: 🌲 Two large shelters exist on the west side of RSBBAA 🌲 Two smaller shelters are on the east side 🌲 One additional structure exists in George Genereux Urban Regional Park

The smaller shelters may be removable by volunteers, but the larger west-side structures are built from heavy logs and may require help from a certified arborist or experienced forestry professional.

We are looking for: ✅ A kind-hearted certified arborist willing to volunteer or offer discounted assistance ✅ Volunteers willing to help dismantle unsafe structures ✅ Community members who care deeply about protecting our forests and greenspaces

These forests are loved by so many people for walking, birding, learning, healing, and connecting with nature. Losing them to wildfire would be devastating.

🔥 Community Safety & Forest Protection Update – May 11, 2026 🔥

Today around the noon hour, Terri was walking on the west side of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area when she noticed smoke rising from a debris shelter (brush tipi structure) within the forest.

Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Terri attempted to safely manage the fire but quickly realized it was not controllable due to dry spring conditions, strong winds, and highly flammable forest fuels. She immediately contacted the Fire Department.

Thanks to her quick thinking and responsible action, a potentially dangerous wildfire situation was prevented. Her response may have helped protect:

People walking in the forest

Nearby infrastructure, including the Canadian National Railway corridor

Residential areas such as Cedar Villa Estates

The long-term health of this valued urban forest

🌲 The Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area is one of Saskatoon’s most cherished green spaces. Events like this remind us how quickly fire can spread in dry conditions—and how important it is to act early and responsibly.
