🏆 Congratulations to Chelsea Nyarko on receiving the 2026 RCE Saskatchewan Award for Achievement in Education for Sustainable Development! 🌾

What began as a Master's research project at the University of Saskatchewan has blossomed into an award-winning environmental education initiative inspiring restoration, stewardship, and citizen science across our community.

Chelsea's project, Ecological Grassland Restoration at the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, addresses the challenge of invasive Smooth Brome across 33.5 hectares of grassland within Saskatoon's urban forest. Through research, restoration planning, and public engagement, the project envisions transforming degraded utility corridors into thriving native prairie habitat supporting pollinators, birds, wildlife, and biodiversity.

This remarkable work demonstrates how local conservation efforts can contribute to global sustainability goals while empowering communities to become active stewards of nature.

Anna's inspiring project, Future Forward: When Prairie Ecology Meets Digital Innovation, demonstrates how youth leadership, environmental stewardship, and technology can work together to create meaningful change.

From educating the public about invasive Smooth Brome and prairie biodiversity in the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, to developing a digital sports scorekeeping app that reduces paper use, Anna has shown that sustainability can be advanced through both ecological awareness and innovative thinking.

Her work bridges environmental science, computer programming, community engagement, and climate action while supporting multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Please use caution near George Genereux Urban Regional Park as the Saskatoon Fire Department continues monitoring hot spots following the recent grass and brush fire near Highway 7 and Township Road 364.

Dry grass, strong winds, and extreme fire conditions across Saskatchewan mean even a small spark can quickly spread. Residents are reminded to avoid smoking or vaping in parks and trails, properly extinguish cigarettes, avoid open flames, and report suspicious activity or signs of fire immediately.

George Genereux Urban Regional Park is an important naturalized green space supporting birds, pollinators, wildlife habitat, biodiversity, and recreation within Saskatoon’s west side. Protecting our urban green spaces helps protect wildlife, air quality, community wellbeing, and ecological resilience.
