I’m kind of bored of that genre of photography where it’s an African subject with surreal objects surrounding it and I understand the need for it as it challenges the status quo but as it moves forward it becomes more and more empty? The narrative is simply the visuals with vague ideas of using folklore and memory. I guess it sells that’s why it’s popular and makes institutions look diverse enough to display but we could be doing so much more
The abstraction of African visuals is really exciting to look at but I feel that what happens is a dilution of our visual culture. There’s no pinpointing this is Igbo culture or this is Amhara culture, it’s all being warped in these surrealist visuals that are interesting but lack substance and weight

Sometimes the most healing thing you can do is go somewhere beautiful, eat something delicious, and just breathe.
