I would actually go as far as to say that MOST abuse is unintentional. I think most people will go through their lives without ever experiencing intentional abuse. People are abusive because they're selfish, because they're stressed, because they care more about what society thinks they should do than the impacts of their actions on their children and partners, because they think what they're doing is correct, because they've made it make sense in their own heads, because they think they can fix their victims, they think they can fix their relationships, they think they can stop you from leaving, they think they can make you a better partner to them, they think that means you need to do what they want. We've sort of constructed mental illness in a way that doing this shit to other people counts as a form of mental illness because it is anti social behavior in the literal sense— it is behavior that causes social harm.
I don't say any of this to excuse it. I think everyone needs to be more aware of this because if you think abuse has to be intentional you will never realize you are capable of abusive behavior. You will never realize you are being shitty to the people you love, because YOU know what you mean, YOU know you don't mean any harm. But you're doing harm. You need to pay attention to the impact you have on other people, and you need to do it all the time, Especially when you feel least capable of doing so. Sorry! You live in a society. Get your head out of your ass.

“happy birthday,” you speak so quietly, not wanting to disturb him too much when he’s just waking up. and he can’t help the beaming, boyish smile that forms on his lips, matching yours but turned up to a hundred, as he starts to sit up.
he rubs the sleep from his eyes with a little exhale, feeling warmth rush through him at the cute as hell display with one hand resting on the bed to keep himself propped up in front of you.
the flame flickers across his face, reflecting in his shiny eyes, taking it all in.
“you gotta make a wish, it’s the rules,” you remind him playfully, holding the plate that much closer to him to encourage him. he locks in immediately with a nod, breathing in a breath through his nose before closing his eyes and furrowing his brows in adorable concentration.
you swear your heart grows in your chest.
and then he blows out the candle, leaving you both in the calm dimness of your bedroom once more.
“what’d you wish for?”
“i can’t tell you, then it won’t come true,” he says matter-of-factly as he swipes his finger through the saccharine frosting, bringing it to his lips with a growing grin.
“but honestly i already have everything i want,” he adds, talking over the sweetness on his tongue, and your entire body softens at the earnestness of it.
“yeah?”
“definitely.”
you can’t resist closing the distance between you and pressing your lips to his, getting a taste of the lingering sugar for yourself. he hums into it, his nose gently grazing yours, before you pull back just to feel him leaning in to chase more of you, making you chuckle.
“so then you wouldn’t want anymore kisses then? since you’ve already gotten your fill?” you tease with him pressing his mouth to yours in between words, landing at the corner of your mouth a few times.
“no ‘cause that’s not what i meant. i should get all the kisses i want since it’s my birthday. isn’t that a rule?” he murmurs, slowly working his way towards your jaw and neck, getting greedy.
“i don’t think it is,” you muse, smiling to yourself as you lean into it, not putting in any effort at all to stop him because you’re enjoying this way too much.
“well i’m making it a new rule then,” he trails his mouth right back up, needing to feel the plushness of your lips again and again and again.
“okay, baby,” you sigh, relenting with faux reluctance, giving him a smile as you run a hand through his hair, eventually cupping his cheek that’s still warm from him nuzzling into his pillow.
“you can have as many as you want before midnight tonight.”
and of course adrian doesn’t waste a second, knowing full well he’d be happy to let his lips go numb just to take full advantage of the perks of being the birthday boy.
