oh one more thing. the lipsync in your recent animations looks really good! im considering getting back into animation myself so if you can, could you give a tutorial of sorts? or if you just followed one yourself, could you point me towards it? thank you <333

as for my process, its a lot of bullshitting that tends to follow a straightforward consistent formula. I dont follow tutorials because honestly im just doing it the same way I did when I was 10 years old drawing with a mouse on Scratch. so, disclaimer that im not an expert and dont know what im doing :3
first off all, I sketch out the base pose of whatever I want to add lip syncing to. im not able to tween, so theyre just static images. I like to fully colour them in to be easier to see what the final will look like, and woohoo, now I have a mouthless puppet.
I have 7 mouth shapes I typically use. theres no super strict letters assigned to each shape since I kind if just use whatever looks best for the sound.
flat mouth for things like "b" and "p" and "m"
two clenched teeth shapes for stressed constantans like "this" and "please" and "cheat", (i also use it for "y" sometimes)
two shapes for round sounds like "you" and "what"
two wide open mouths for larger vowel sounds like "cant" and "anything". if the vowel is very distinct or loud, i might use both sizes, but if its fast or soft, just one can do the trick
but, it depends on what the project is. In my Prom Queen video, each dancestor only says 3 words, so i actually only needed to make the same 4 mouths for each of them, since some sounds just arent there at all. so just keep the project in mind. if all the words are shouted, keep that in mind when drawing your mouths. but yeah, you dont need a lot to still make it look great!
as you can see from karkat who snuck in over there, i also open the jaw for vowels, when the mouth opens its widest. try putting your hand under your jaw as you talk to feel when the jaw would open the most.
If the words being said are slower, it could help to add more frames. for example, the Caliope and Caliborn animation has double the amount of mouth shapes for each character as the other projects, making it super smooth and fluid. genuinely just add as much as you want. i usually just dont draw that many because im lazy and dont have a ton of time
then comes the part thats hell but also the most satisfying. animating. disclaimer, there are 5 billion ways to do this that are better, but on top of my lack of tweening software, I don't have animation software either. so I use what's available, capcut for my pc. I manually export all my frames into a file, then plug then into capcut, where I can start splicing them them to fit the audio.
my main tip would be to sound out the words with your own mouth, very exaggeratedly, like a cartoon. you can even look in the mirror if that works. but just feeling what shapes are being made for yourself really helps!
it can start looking pretty... messy quickly
