I didn’t talk about it much here but I just finished an intimate tour with Karen O that took us to New York, L.A., San Fran, London, and Berlin. I played guitar and did backing vocal effects for her solo project as well as opened the shows. It was great and I love her.

The very first show we played was a living room Sofar Sounds show. Tonight I play Sofar alone. You can read about it and more in this New York Times article that just came out!

Last year was my first time at Accra’s ChaleWote Street Arts Festival and it was such an amazing experience for me that I’d been looking forward to this years for the last 6 months.

Both days ( August 23rd and 24th) reminded me of why I love the arts and why i’m happy to be living in Accra. Accra Dot Alt has managed to really start what can only be a revolution in the way Ghanaians experience and access the arts.

The festival is an amalgamation of fashion, food, visual and performing arts and a great blending of all the different segments of the city.

With the theme this year being “Death: An Eternal dream into limitless rebirth” I took the opportunity as a repurposing/refurbishing junkie to contribute to the festival by upcyling old soda crates into functional potted plant benches. I’m completely honored to have my work so close to so many insanely gifted artists.

This festival is history in the making and definitely set to be one of the biggest on the continent. If you missed it this year you MUST make your way to Accra for the next one.

Accra’s deepest history lies in James Town, the original port city leading to the development of Ghana as a nation. James Town is a time capsule and a treasure trove all at once. The place is filled with beautiful colonial architecture and spirited boxing legends, a tumultuous history of the transatlantic slave trade and and a people’s diehard spirit to remember who they are. Here a constellation of families, cultural practices, and aquatic livelihoods persistently remix James Town’s past, present and future. A couple of years ago, low on life and high on energy and in need of musical salvation, I decided to trek across Mali to Festival au Desert - a music festival in Timbuktu. I was initially apprehensive about making the journey alone in a corner of the continent that I’d never been to, but it turned out to be the best three weeks of my life. There’s something about solo travel in completely unknown spaces… a freedom, a stillness… which, after that trip, I became addicted to.

Also (especially as a woman) being able to wander freely and happily through an unknown space does something for your faith in the goodness of human beings. I made friends along the way who remain with me to this day, absorbed staggering amounts of beauty, luxuriated in music and, well, got life. Mali is…Mali. It’s gorgeous.

So much to say about the experience that I wouldn’t know where to start now… The next time I go I’ll be sure to write about it in real-time, which will be with my angel/sister Kui sometime in the next couple of years. Can’t wait :)
