It's built on the site of the mysterious 1987 plane crash that killed Mozambique's first president, who was also a major ally of the South African black liberation movement. There's one pipe for each person who died in the crash, and they all have slits so that when the wind blows you hear a symphony of soft howls...haunting

Machel's plane ccrash is thought to have been an assassination coordinated by the South African apartheid government. I wrote about it here:

Ocupações Temporárias (Temporary Occupations) is an annual contemporary art exhibition in Maputo, Mozambique. I attended the 2012 edition, themed Estrangeiros (Foreigners), and was completely blown away - wrote about it here:

In the beginning, PASS was a 30-day music festival that brought genre-busting, mind-bending acts from all over the African worlds to Cape Town once a year, and broadcast the whole thing live on the net.

Now, PASS lives across space and time, with multiple events throughout the year, all of which - along with past recordings and trans-galactic playlists - are broadcast 24/7 at www.panafricanspacestation.org.za
