Of course, if they were not who they were, Inej would likely never have encountered Kaz at all. I think that we collectively forget as a fandom that while Nina anx Kaz bicker, they’re very sweet with eachother and they show that they care for eachother in the most subtle ways. When Nina was roses with parem, Kaz was the one to ask what the symptoms were and how long she had until it overtook her. He was the one she told about Matthias and he didn’t care because he couldn’t judge her. Kaz was the one who took the parem from Matthias cuz he knew he could protect her and HE. FUCKING. WANTED. TO. In the first scene that we meet Nina in, he admired her and respected her and he had this sense of wonder about how the Barrel hadn’t taken her hope for Matthias. And when Matthias died, Dirtyhands, the bastard of the Barrel, picked a tulip, laid it on Matthias’s body, and FORMED A PROTECTIVE CIRCLE AROUND HIM. AND NINA FCKING LOVES HIM TOO. She went back for Kaz because she didn’t want him dead or captured. She noticed how he looked at Inej because of course she did, that’s her brother. She saved his goddam life. And I think both of them ended up a bit shocked about how much they cared. Kaz never had a sibling he could turn to and bicker with because with Jordie he was always on the run from SOMETHING. Kaz lost that familial tie when he was 7. Nina was everything he never had the chance to or got to have. She was a little sibling, someone he could look after, someone he could joke around with for the first time since Jordie. And Nina had been taken from her parents from a young age and then she grew up in the Little Palace where she didn’t have anyone. She made friends, but she never found that connection until she met Kaz. He was someone she could annoy the hell out of, but also someone she could go to and talk to. She knew he wouldn’t judge her because Kaz also had blood on his hands. They both grew up having to be the older person and be mature and fight and kill people. With eachother they could be teenagers again, they could bicker and pick fights and insult eachother but they also found someone to love again.
