on purpose.

            “   ugh—   okay,   sure.   ”       he agrees and gestures to the table,   his way of offering ty lee a seat,    then digs through the bag to take out a bag of mild hot chips.     he’ll leave the extra hot ones for azula.      “  oh.   did you want one?  ”    zuko grabs his sister’s mug from the cupboard and fills it with two spoons of hot chocolate before covering the powder with the remaining hot water.     “  here.   there’s milk in the fridge if you wanted any.  ”    zuko places the mug in front of ty lee then sits up on the counter,   busying himself with the chips as his stomach rumbles quietly.     “  so explain to me,   how do you see people’s auras?  ”    not that he’s a believer.    in fact,   zuko is very sceptical and dismisses these things.

       stillness   &   grace   of   a   CORPSE  !        but  ty-lee  is  swift   &   quiet,   and   its   through   volume  of  her  vocals   ALONE   that   mai  recognizes  the  shift  in  presence.   the   sudden   proximity  comes   as   surprise;   golden   eyes  flying  open.   a   breath  through   the   nose.       ❛   WELL.  ❜    &  out .    ❛   what’s   more   important   is   that   you’ll   have   even  bigger  fans   than  me.   like   what   do  i   know   about …   ❜   she  casts  a   glance  at   ty   lee’s  intricate  design    ❛   that.  ❜   however  small,   there’s   the   hint  of  a  SMILE  along  pale  lips.

                    𝙉𝙤   𝙤𝙣𝙚,   𝙣𝙤𝙩   𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣   𝙖   𝙨𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡   𝙢𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙖   𝙫𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙣   𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚   𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛   ,   would   have   been   able   to   recognize   the   store   front   as   a   frozen   yoghurt   café.   Besides   the   small   decal   in   the   window   ,   it   looked   more   like   a   boutique,   nestled   away   from   the   bustling   city.   Made   for   selling   perfumes   ,   luxury   trinkets   and   whatever   else   the   overly   wealthy   liked   to   indulge   in.   Perhaps   yoghurt   fell   under   the   umbrella   of   delicacy   with   the   way   Azula   dug   into   it   ,   and   Azula   –   well,   wealthy   was   an   understatement.  

The   gymnast   stood   on   her   tiptoes   ,   pink   tongue   peeking   out   between   pearly   whites   as   she   perfected   the   flat   lay   she   would   post   to   her   story.   Her   voice   is   soft   as   she   steadies   herself,   as   if   her   breathe   will   blow   away   her   masterpiece.   ❝   Just   ooone   sec   ,   ❞   She   trails   off   ,   falling   back   into   her   chair   only   when   her   socials   were   updated.   A   bright   grin   splits   across   her   face   as   she   finally   gets   the   chance   to   try   her   strawberry   treat.   ❝   Simple   ( … )   connections   !   ❞   She   points   the   butt   of   her   spoon   at   the   girl   across   her.   ❝   You   know   how   you   have   alllll   these   hot   shot   ,   or   more   like   ,   just   hot     friends   ?   The   ones   that   get   you   into   the   coolest   lounges   and   clubs   ?   I   have   my   people   ,   not   as   hot   ,   who   let   me   in   on   cute   new   stores   opening   up   !   ❞ 

She   leans   forward   with   her   face   cupped   in   her   hands   ,   grin   widening   as   far   as   it   can.   ❝   And   sometimes   ,   𝚝𝚑𝚎   𝚙𝚕𝚊𝚌𝚎𝚜   𝚓𝚞𝚜𝚝   𝚏𝚒𝚗𝚍   𝚖𝚎.   This   one   practically   called   to   me   !   ❞

              𝐬𝐡𝐞'𝐬  𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝  𝐛𝐲  𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲  ,   𝐛𝐮𝐭  azula  would  only  consider  two  of  them  friends  .   even  then  ,   she  knows  there’s  rumors   (  probably  started  by  her  idiot  brother  or  his  even  dumber  friends  )   that  makes  her  seem  FAKE  and  not  a  good  friend  ,   and  well  ...   they’re  not  wrong  ,   per  say  .   she’s  just  too  good  to  ever  be  caught  in  the  act  .   azula  was  GREEDY  ,   always  put  herself  first  .   she  was  the  product  of  her  father’s  care  ,   obviously  .  

                  but  azula’s  pretty  ,   and  she’s  rich  ,   scary  enough  to  get  whatever  she  wants  .   ty  lee’s  lucky  she’s  PRETTY  and  TALENTED  enough  to  stick  around  and  be  azula’s  friend  ,   though  her  father’s  connections  probably  helped  .   and  it’s  not  that  she  HATES  the  bubbly  girl  ,   more  so  that  ty  lee  is  the  opposite  of  what  she’ll  ever  be  ,   and  the  whole  personality  thing  of  hers  could  be  exhausting  .   it’s  a  good  thing  that  the  places  ty  lee  chose  always  had  something  with  CAFFEINE  .    ‘  you  should  add  me  to  your  story  next  ,  ’    she  says  casually  ,   watching  the  other  snap  a  picture  .   ARTISTRY  ,   something  else  she  never  fully  understood  .   unless  it  was  on  tiktok  or  her  martial  arts  .     ‘  of  course  i  do  ,   that’s  a  small  part  of  the  reasons  why  i’m  friends  with  you  .  ’    cue  a  wink  .    azula ?   she  could  be  an  ACADEMY AWARD WINNING  actress  if  she  put  her  mind  to  it  .    ‘  well  thank  god  ,   because  now  i  know  more  places  to  spend  my  money  .  ’    she  trusted  ty  lee’s  tastes  ,   something  that  was  a  surprise  to  azula  as  well  .  

          ‘   MAYBE  HONOR  ISN’T  THE  MOST  IMPORTANT  THING  TO  HIM  ANYMORE.   there  are  other  things  in  the  world  that  matter  now   —   like  actually  saving it.  ‘   she  hungers  to  know  more  about  azula’s  childhood,    but  she  will  not  ask  for  it   (   oh,   sweet  childish  urge,   the  fruit  of  summer  spilling  into  her  mouth   ;   this  little  glimpse  can  barely  damn  the  starving  ache  that  sits  inside  of  her   ).   ‘   you  and  zuko  are  completely  different  people,   ‘    katara  argues  with  a  low  hum,   and  that  is  the  only  truth  she’s  ever  known  so  thoroughly.    HOW  EASY  WAS  IT  TO  FORGIVE  A  MONSTER ??   what  about  a  child   — ??   ‘   but  you  could  be  more  like  him.    you  don’t  have  to  be  like  this.   ‘

after everything azula did, she’s a little surprised that zuko was satisfied with only making her go through therapy. then again… he was in a position where everyone was watching him and his actions, it would’t reflect well on him if he locked up both his father and sister. genuine surprise overtakes her features while she watches the other girl. in all the time they’d known one another, which, really wasn’t any amount of time, really, she’d never know the fire princess to admit she wasn’t right. ❛ is there anything else that you’ve learned? ❜

         ‘   my  tattoo…??   ‘   her  rage  -  touched  voice  trembles  in  her  throat   (   for  a  passing  moment,  she  is  not  THE  AVATAR,   she  is  katara,    simply  katara,   a  girl  from  the  southern  water  tribe,   a  child,   a  child,   a  child   ).    SHE  KNOWS  WHAT  TATTOO  SITS  UPON  HER,    sprawled  across  her  wrist  like  the  most  deadly  of  promises.    it  was  coloured  in  red,    a  darkened  crimson  that  blooms  as  a  bruise  across  her  skin   —   it  is  anothing  thing  she  has  learned  to  hide  away,   to  keep  secret.

      ‘   why  would  i  show  you  that ??   ‘   she  spits,   as  if  the  answer  didn’t  already  lie  at  the  tip  of  her  tongue.   SHE  KNOWS  WHY  SHE  SHOULD  SHOW  AZULA.   but  she  had  always  expected  this  moment  to  be  quieter,   to  be  kinder.   she  had  expected  her  heart  to  be  mimicked,   her  life  to  be  duplicated  in  the  eyes  of  someone  sweet,    NOT  A  FIRE  NATION  BRAT.   ‘   get  your  hands  off  me.   ‘

         she’s  not  to  pleased  about  it  either  ,   but  the  water  girl’s  reaction  tells  her  everything  she  needs  to  know  .   for  once  ,   princess  azula  HATES  being  right  ,   hates  knowing  that  fate  has  wronged  her  so  much  .   everything  about  her  life  had  been  perfect :   her  brother  out  of  the  picture  ,   her  firebending  was  OUT  of  this  world  ,   she’s  surely  in  line  for  the  throne  -  and  she  always  thought  her  soulmate  would  be  the  least  of  her  problems   (  or  perhaps  she’s  been  in  denial  ,   because  what  was  supposed  to  be  flame  looked  a  lot  like  WATER  in  red  )  .  

            ‘   everything  you  say  sounds  ominous.   ‘   despite  the  even  tone  of  her  words,   she  cannot  help  the  smallest  twitch  of  her  lips   (   a  threat  of  a  smile    —   it  smooths  her  feelings  into  something  more  manageable,    the  sweet  anger  bleeding  free   ).   she  is  still  straightening  out  her  skirt,    eyebrow  raising  as  she  turns  to  look  upon  the  other  girl.   SHE  IS  PRETTY,    the  twilight  -  spawn  of  a  demonic  company,    because  devils  could  look  good,   too.   ‘   why  bother  being  nice  to  me ??   ‘
