Roy Ayers, Chameleon, The Midnight Special, 1977
The performance by Herbie Hancock and his all-star jazz-fusion “Dream Team” band on the music television programme The Midnight Special in 1977 is one of the most legendary jam sessions in jazz-funk history.
Here are all the facts, background information and details about this historic performance:
📺 The context: The Midnight Special (1977)
The programme: The Midnight Special was an extremely popular US late-night music television programme on NBC, known for its genuine, unvarnished live performances (without playback).
The date: The performance took place in Episode 235 (Season 6, Episode 3) and was originally broadcast on 23 September 1977.
The occasion: Herbie Hancock acted as musical host in this episode and brought together the absolute elite of the jazz-fusion, funk and soul scene of the time.
🎵 The song: “Chameleon”
The original: “Chameleon” is a groundbreaking jazz-funk standard that originally appeared on Herbie Hancock’s legendary 1973 album Head Hunters. The original is almost 16 minutes long.
The 1977 version: For television, the piece was transformed into a high-energy jam session. Instead of the original Headhunters line-up, the guest musicians brought in completely new timbres. Particularly dominant was the interplay between Hancock’s synthesizers, the tight guitar riffs and the swirling vibraphone interludes.
🎷 The legendary all-star line-up (“The Dream Team”)
The line-up for that evening is now regarded by music lovers as one of the most talent-packed line-ups of the 1970s:
Herbie Hancock – keyboards / synthesiser (leader and composer of the song).
Roy Ayers – vibraphone (vibes). His energetic, percussive solos on the vibraphone gave the funky track a unique, flowing texture.
George Benson – guitar. Benson was at the absolute height of his fame in 1977 (following his hit album Breezin' from 1976).
Jean-Luc Ponty – Electric violin. His distinctive violin sound, often enhanced with effects (flanger/delay), brought a futuristic progressive rock touch to the funk.
John Klemmer – Saxophone. Known for his lyrical and, at the time, highly successful smooth jazz approach.
Phil Upchurch – Bass. One of the most sought-after session bassists and guitarists in R&B and jazz history.
Harvey Mason – Drums. Mason was the original drummer on the Head Hunters album and thus played the same iconic, metronome-like funk beat that he himself had created in the studio in 1973.
🔄 More performances from this session
The band didn’t stick to just this one song for the recording. In the same episode, this all-star line-up also played:
🎼 “Fever”: An extended, extremely groovy jam version of the famous classic, in which almost every musician was given the chance to contribute their own solo.
In the rest of the show, George Benson also performed his solo hits “The Greatest Love of All” and “Nature Boy”. Soul singer Minnie Riperton was also part of the episode.
🌟 Cultural significance today
For decades, this performance was known only as a legend or through poor-quality bootlegs. Particularly in recent years (fuelled by official archive releases from The Midnight Special and social media channels such as Jazz Is Dead), video clips of this jam went viral on platforms like Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.
The performance is now regarded as a prime example of the “No Ego” mentality of the 1970s fusion era: despite the enormous star power on stage, no one took centre stage; instead, all the musicians picked up on each other’s musical cues perfectly.
This performance from 1977 demonstrates it in every single moment: for me, jazz is far more than just a genre – it is a fascinating gateway to the infinite possibilities of music, breaking down all barriers and showing just how universal creative freedom can truly be.

I should probably look into whether or not someone has broken down the films looks yet, but one thing that popped out to me (beyond the color/creativity) was that Mariah's yellow work outfit and wig combo reminded me of Rihanna's MET gala look from 2015.
