Shoutout to Suzanne Collins and to a lesser extent the HG movies for showing that People of Color are often the most frequent and MOST UNDESERVING victims of Oppression and have suffered most.

Rue, Thresh, Boggs, Beetee, Ampert, Lucy Gray, Reaper, Jessup, the President sworn in at the end of Mockingjay (Commander Paylor I think is her name?) and in the books, Katniss’ family themselves are included, but not the only ones in the series.

Spent a good chunk of my morning watching some Hunger Games reactions on Youtube, including The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

I, notoriously CRIPPLINGLY TERRIFIED OF SNAKES, had to watch from the living room in ABSOLUTE HORROR as this FOUL BEAST CLIMBED ONTO MY DRESSER WHERE MY PARAKEETS ARE, ONTO THE BIRDCAGE.

This YouTube comment has been on my mind since I finished SOTR so this is what I came up with:

Lucy Gray was the mockingbird, living on the outskirts of district 12 and was there at the wrong time when they were forced to stay there after the Dark Days. They were subjected to the Capitol’s politics despite not being a part of Panem, technically speaking. Lucy Gray became part of the Games and, likewise, the mockingbird became affiliated with the Capitol through the jabberjay’s release into the woods, but it still continued to sing its own song.

Haymitch was the jabberjay, a Capitol tool that did what it had to in order to survive. The Capitol thought they could control them, but they retaliated in the form of rebellion. Haymitch refused to be a piece in their game and tried to end it, and the jabberjay, in the eyes of the Capitol, created a freak of nature that showed the Capitol’s lack of complete control.

Katniss was the mockingjay, a slap in the face of the Capitol, something that was never meant to exist. Together, the song of the mockingbird that lived on for generations and the stubbornness of the jabberjay that refused to die, the mockingjay had the best of both worlds. It was a symbol of rebellion and unity.

Peak take

Headcannon:

The Covey, and Lucy Gray in general, become the token guardians of 12 and of Those who love the woods and music.

I can imagine parents in 12 seeing their children venture beyond the fence, for food and for recreation, and they let them.

I can imagine parents’ whispers that “No Matter What, if You are ever alone in the woods, there are the spirits of friendly people to protect you. The Covey, Spirits of freedom and nature, were once a living family of musicians. They still have living family all around Panem to this day. And One, called Lucy Gray, is the most swift and beautiful sounding of all of the spirits of the Covey. And, if you ask her with a song, she’ll guide you to where you need to go with her Mockingjays.”

I can imagine the fearful look of a small distant relative to the Covey, emboldened by her family’s stories of the forest, but now that she’s there, she’s afraid. But she remembers, for every Capital Drone and Spy Bird, there are family here to protect her from them, and there are Birds the Capital can never control there to guide her.

I finished SOTR yesterday and I now have this image of the ending of a possible Movie.

Imagine:

Young Haymitch is sitting alone in his new house, muttering and reciting the Raven, and Woody Harrelson’s voice comes in over his.

“I keep No company…”

And we see Woody’s Haymitch sitting and writing years later, and we see flashes of young Katniss with Haymitch watching from afar, and quickly flash through the first trilogy while he narrates.

And As Haymitch is writing, he is interrupted. Happily so, this time.

His door is being crashed down by his Grand-Niece and Nephew, and their parents.

“Hey little JabberJays!” He says, embracing them.

And then he notices that Katniss is holding a package, and Peeta has a warm grin on his face.

“Thank You… for Everything, Haymitch.” Katniss says softly.

He opens the package to the urging of his grand-niblings and finds the empty incubator.

And then he realizes that the bread basket Peeta had didn’t have bread in it.

There were Goose Eggs.

And we see him truly, soberly smile.

It always made me wonder how much convincing it took for the existing victors to help Katniss/Peeta in CF but now we know it wasn’t about her at all. They were doing it for Haymitch.

I wonder if Hay, Wiress, Beetee and Mags had a moment together, maybe post reaping in the tribute center, where he told them they’re finally going to do this thing. Together.

Where he told Beetee that he himself was going to take the job Ampert could never finish. That they finally have a group worthy to take up his cause.

And he told Wiress that they finally going to make sure no other young people would lose themselves to the games. There would be no more awful, cruel arenas that drove children mad.

And he hugs Mags with every “Thank You” in the book. He tells her that no matter what, no more lives will be spent mentoring children to their deaths. That if she sacrifices herself in that arena, again, that every child lost in these awful games would be there to thank her as well. That she was a comforting light when the darkness was closing in on so many.

And he tells Finnick and Joanna that they are more than their Victories in the games. That by choosing to be on the right side of history, they’re ending this with dignity and remaining true to themselves. That they have dignity still, and he sees that, and Panem sees it.

They’re a Family. They couldn’t have done it without each other.
