Dear God
every successive generation trades off between "ah i've wasted all of my years on meaningless hedonic abandon, when I should have been living a stifling normie life" and "ah i've wasted all my years on a stifling normie life, when i should have been engaged in meaningless hedonic abandon" and you know we could just do something else. or maybe do a little mixing and matching if we're so inclined
Bottom line is you're going to regret not doing something different with your life no matter what you do.
Life is complicated. Don't worry so much.
i am reminded, my coworkers were discussing "would you rather be alone in the woods with a man or a bear" and i was experiencing Complete Perplexment cause they were like "I would pick the bear" and then I learned this was a whole internet Thing, where women were saying they would rather be alone with a Bear than a random human man, and I was like okay first of all, the status of wildlife education in this country is truly pitiful.
but second, are you telling me that if you were stranded in the wilderness and you saw a bear and in the opposite direction you saw a man coming towards you, you would run from the human person and go TOWARDS the wild bear?
I was there for the beginning of that conversation on TikTok, and it was started by women hikers/outdoor workers talking about how when they were alone in the woods it made them more nervous to know there were strange men out in it than bears. Not because bears aren't dangerous, but everyone expects you to take appropriate precautions for bears like NOT approaching them and carrying bear spray. It was not only OK it's expected.
However, if you take precautions interacting with strange men in the woods, those men will be offended and act like you're a paranoid bitch, but if you don't keep them at a distance and you get assaulted, people will still blame you for having been out there at all.
It wasn't about bears being magical forest protectors. It's about no judgement being attached to acting like a potential predator is in fact a potential predator. Alpha male bloggers are the ones out there trying to make "I choose the bear" about "look at these stupid bitches who don't want a man to save them if a bear attacks."
thaaaaat's gonna be a [[citation needed]] from me cause uh. pretty sure way more men than that have been in a situation where they could have assaulted someone
also what kind of survey asks that? was this a legitimate research question because it seems weird to ask people if they would commit a heinous crime as part of a survey and expect honest results
i remember this one
i think you can find it without paywall somewhere. but the basis of it was examining whether respondents would answer differently based on whether the heinous crime was referred to in direct terms (rape) vs generally describing using force.
I didn’t find it available for free quickly on my phone to read the actual paper, but I read a couple articles that cite it, and to summarize what I read for anyone else curious:
it sounds like they asked 86 male college students (I see one person pointing out that they are mostly white juniors at the same school in North Dakota) and 1/3 said they would force a woman to have sex with them if they could get away with it, compared to 13% who said they would rape a woman if they could get away with it (the only difference being use of the word).
Eighty-six college students from the same school in North Dakota???
It's pretty dismal they were able to get that result within any group, don't get me wrong, but that's...not what we would call a representative sample
These comments are killing me. "I don't think these women go into the woods very much, bears are quite dangerous! And sometimes there are men in the woods and they're nice." Like yeah thanks for instilling your mountain wisdom John Muir, but these meme is just women - many of whom are sexual assault survivors if you read what they're saying-- communicating that they feel unsafe around strange men. Whatever smartypants points yall are getting for knowing that bears are predators is being counteracted by your stubborn attachment to being tooooo fucking literal.
I understand that the fear has its roots in real trauma and experiences with abuse, I also think treating it as rational and based in reality for a person to see every stranger as a threat can be unhealthy
It seems really similar to the facebook posts where people are like "some random person at walmart is trying to kidnap your kids into human trafficking! Stay vigilant!" and stuff like that where people get themselves into this nightmare world of their own making where every person that acts weird or in a way they don't understand, or looks "scary" is part of some sinister network trying to abduct and rape them.
And this can be harmful to other people for instance remember that woman that called the cops on a black guy in central park because he was birdwatching? Or someone seeing a black kid in a hoodie and deciding he's a "criminal" because they felt "unsafe." Or seeing a person speak a language not english or wearing clothes that are unfamiliar or just going out jogging while not being white.
sometimes people have been taught by media and relatives and friends that "a certain kind" of people is more dangerous (even subconsciously) and they feel this subconscious fear that has been shaped by all kinds of messages including racism, classism transphobia homophobia xenophobia etc. and they are told "it's your trauma, it's valid you feel that way" and "it's your instinct detecting an unsafe situation, you should trust it" but it has these prejudices in it.
And it tells women that it's not safe for them to be outside alone, in other words, to have independence—it's an idea that women are so weak and vulnerable that they can't do things (like go hiking) on their own, which really restricts the freedom of women
Also being afraid of "strangers" or people you don't know, does not protect people from abuse in real life it actually encourages it. Abusive situations like cults or controlling relationships commonly encourage people to think "people outside are dangerous and only want to harm you, you have to be afraid of them" because it makes it harder for them to leave.
In the christofascist ideology that is spreading over many parts of the world, the idea is that men are inherently sexually domineering and lustful and the best they can do is channel this into owning and dominating a woman in a "Godly" marriage. conservative and regressive ideas fully agree that men are inherently predatory and cannot control themselves around women, and they think it can't change because this is the nature of a man, however they think the solution is that women should be property and men's personal sex toys. And part of it is the message to women, "You can't do anything on your own because the Bad men will Get you, at least i'm a Good man that can protect you" so they are encouraged to stay at home and be totally under the control of these dominating and abusive (but superficially 'nice' and 'godly' men) because the scary strangers will Get you
so for these reasons i criticize it...
Preach.
Statistically, most people are harmed by someone they know. How many people do you know who have been attacked by random hikers and how many have been attacked by their friends, boyfriends, husbands, and fathers? There are some men that make me nervous as a woman and they're not the ones I pass on trails in the woods.
(Also if a bear passed me I think I would shit myself tbh)
I feel like the "stranger danger" mentality really just encourages people to imprison themselves and leave themselves potentially more vulnerable.
get 🥺 men 🥺 flowers 🥺
Falling for scams does hurt people, actually
TW: Human trafficking, SA, torture, discussion of scam farms
I see a whole bunch of people arguing that they would rather risk giving to a scammer than ignore someone's gofundme. I also see people saying things like "I can't believe some sick people are profiteering off genocide" and like, me neither, but I feel like you guys really don't understand who actually runs these kinds of scams and what they are.
Scams of noticeable scale-- like scam asks being sent from hundreds of accounts to every user on Tumblr!-- are typically related to organised crime in poor countries, not Susan from Milwaukee who wants a new coat and has no scruples. People get trafficked by gangs to scam farms in Asia and Africa where they're worked to the bone and tortured trying to get idiots in wealthy countries to part with their money. Genocide profiteering is pretty much the least evil thing these people do.
Here's a UN article on it. Obvious warnings for content related to human trafficking and SA.
Transnational crime syndicates based in Southeast Asia are fuelling the trafficking of people, either forcing them to commit crimes or for s
When you donate to a scammer, you fund these organisations and give them a reason to exist. It's possible some of the fundraisers are legit. I honestly find it unlikely given I'm not seeing any from any other countries where urgent fundraisers would seem to have great reason to exist but which haven't captured the same level of attention on Tumblr-- the number of Sudanese, Congolese, Ukrainian, Burmese or Uyghur fundraisers in my DMs is a fat 0. In any case, there are safer ways to help.
If you want to help (which is great!) you don't have to take the risk of paying for human trafficking. Donate to legitimate charities which have the resources to safely and effectively ensure the money and help is getting to the right people. Funding human trafficking rings in Myanmar is not a good risk to be taking while trying to help.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has caused immense suffering, with countless individuals displaced, harmed, and killed over the years. Tens

What do you mean? Boops are inherently related to marine biology.
