"JUST FOR ONCE the defences came down. He stood, a chunk of a man, waving frantically. He let an enormous smile consume his face. He put his hands on his hips - almost the way gunslingers do - and allowed the smile to melt into a look of profound satisfaction. A few moments before, Jacques Villeneuve had crossed the line to finish third in the European Grand Prix at Jerez. It was enough to make him Canada's first Formula 1 World Champion - and only the fourth man in history to have won this and the IndyCar Championship. Habitually, through all of it on both sides of the Atlantic, he had lived somewhere behind the defences. He'd rarely betrayed emotions. Now, on the late afternoon of 26 October 1997, he kept inhaling deeper and deeper and the grin opened into the consuming smile again. He seemed uncertain how to cope with his own body language and fidgeted restlessly as if he was letting out energy."
