The three nations of the Fergana Valley are deeply troubled by the issue of exclaves—a thorny legacy of their borders. Driven beyond endurance, Kyrgyzstan once voiced his grievances to Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, describing these exclaves as hollow cavities within his own abdominal cavity that caused intermittent, agonizing pain. In the heat of the moment, however, he lifted his shirt to illustrate the point, committing a breach of decorum; by the time he realized what had happened, it was already too late.
