I obviously get Riggs is suicidally depressed and incredibly unstable, but I also think he’s just kind of weird. He doesn’t seem to register that his behaviour (including a suicide attempt) is the reason Murtaugh is in a bad mood.
If I was in Murtaugh’s position (just turned 50 and getting assigned an impulsive suicidal man who’s blatantly says his only reason for living is job, as my partner), I would also frequently say that I was getting too old for this shit.
Riggs acts like a middle school boy with undiagnosed ADHD and his dynamic with Murtaugh is funnier for it.

Im gonna get my passport taken away from me if i keep drawing these two in england kit
they just suit it so well ok😢
actually I think you should be normal about ordinary citizens of authoritarian countries and yes that applies even to that country you're thinking of right now
"but they support [dictator] and [violent action]!" okay is it possible that a combination of propaganda, election rigging, and authoritarian crackdowns on dissent could lead a population to look like it supports something most people would find distasteful under more reasonable circumstances
From the first two minutes, I get the feeling that this movie going to bad, but at least it’s about a topic I’m interested in (Pacific Theatre WWII and Imperial Japan).
Like the premise itself (British POW is forced to fight other prisoners in a Japanese interment camp) doesn’t seem far fetched because Japanese soldiers were that brutal. I just don’t trust this movie to do the concept well.
Somehow our guy, armed with only a knife, is easily able to take down highly trained soldiers who have a code of never surrendering and fighting to the death.
I doubt it’ll happen but I’m hoping to see the Filipino POWs get fleshed out like their white counterparts. I mean, it takes place in a Japanese internment camp in the Philippines, so maybe there’ll be something.
Okay, I can buy the Japanese forcing POWS to fight to the death, but having a shirtless martial artist kill POWs (only the Filipino ones, the British guy is easily able to defeat him) just seems like racism.
The eccentric bearded American POW is the only likeable character in this movie.
I swear if this movie goes down the white saviour route…
I can appreciate the accuracy in the Japanese treating the Filipino POWs worse than American ones.
How do you make a film about POWs boring?
During his time as POW, Beardy has picked up some Japanese. Be like Beardy.
I am intrigued by whatever Teresa’s deal is. I mean, she’s a Japanese nurse with a non-Japanese name and can speak English fairly well. She’s probably Japanese-American, but I don’t understand why she’s been forced to work for the Japanese army if that’s the case.
I need Beardy to survive this.
