Thanks, Obama!
For real- I love this duo so much though.
hi! i'm a novice transitioning from policy to forensics this year. Because i'm bossy and i like yelling, one of the events i'm trying is OO. But i have something scheduled the afternoon of that month... the tournament is two days but OO starts on the saturday... how long does OO take? I have no idea what to expect in forensics rounds
About as long as any other IE round, since each piece is 10 minutes like HI, DUO, etc. You also have three rounds so chances are at least one of them will be in the afternoon.
I donāt know about your school, but at mine you were expected to stay at tournaments the whole day. You finished your rounds anywhere between 1 and 4, and out rounds were anywhere from 3-6. Then thereās the awards ceremony as well, which my coach wanted us all at to show good sportsmanship and team bonding and stuff.
I am going to do INFO and it's not provided at any tournament other than nat quals and I want to do it for that exact purpose but no one has seen or done it. What's your experience with it? (if any)
I have absolutely zero experience there, sorry!! :(
tbh you're one of my favorite debate blogs on tumblr and i wish i could talk to you more!
aw omg you made my day!!! especially because iāve been kinda inactive lately haha. and iām more of an ie blog, i have barely even touched debate xD but please do talk to me!! weāre all friends here

How To: Blocking a Duo
Welcome to the most fun/stressful/infuriating/rewarding part of the event. Iām going to go over some things Iāve picked up on for blocking, throwing in examples from my Junior year duo to (hopefully) give yāall a better idea of what I mean. It is fairly long, so Iām placing it under a break.

Cutting a Book/Play for an Interp 101
I love original cuttings of books and plays. Ā They make for fantastic interps and have a lot more possibilities to be creative with. Ā The only problem is that it can be difficult to figure out HOW to cut a longer work. Ā If you get frustrated, thatās okay. Ā Iām pretty sure I cried sometime while cutting a book for the first time. Ā Itās a bit of a science that just requires a bit of practice. Ā If middle schoolers can do it, you can too! Ā Here goesā¦
Like actually read it. Ā The entire thing. Ā Not the sparknotes or any of that crap. Ā To do this right, you have to read it all the way through without skipping anything.
grab one of those handy dandy plot organizer things that look like either a sideways weird lightning bolt if you squint or a pyramid. Ā (example at the bottom) SHOUTOUT TO GAC-SSI AND MS. B FOR TEACHING ME THIS AGES AGO!
And use it. Ā Write out the focal points of the lit.
Grab a pencil. Ā DO NOT USE A PEN. Ā ONLY USE PENCIL. Ā WHEN CUTTING LIT PENS ARE A MORTAL SIN.
Go through the lit and [bracket] things that are important to the overall plot of the story.
Type it up.
Print it out.
Make sure you have the entire plot included. Ā If not, go back through and try to find ways to put it back in
Read through it an a talking pace and time it. Ā Just donāt spread it.
Save as ā[title]_[abbreviated date]_[cutting number].*ā Cut.** Ā I can almost guarantee that it will be too long. Ā Iāve done near to 10 interps and almost all of them were from long works like books or plays that I had to substantially cut.
Read through and time it again.
Cut.
Keep doing that until youāre all done. Ā Honestly, it will probably be the longest part but thatās how you have to do it. Ā
Always read through OUT LOUD for every cutting to make sure it follows a logical flow and has all of the key events. Ā
After it is at the right time, cut 30 sec to a minute (or more if you want to move a lot) to allow for blocking out and an intro
Add the characters and blocking
You now have a 100% original interp that was beautifully done. Ā Congrats!

**This way if you need to add stuff back later, you still have old copies and you can easily do this.
Hi, I just started debate and I've been to two tournaments already but haven't broken. Is this normal and how were your first few tournaments?
Itās totally normal, because youāre still learning. Itās ok :) if you feel bad about not breaking, you can turn to more seasoned debaters and ask them for advice.
I myself am not a debater, but for my entire first year of IE, I didnāt break. If that makes you feel any better, haha. It takes practice and time, I find that the best remedy is to ask others around you for advice. It is a team, after all :)
Hi. I just started ld debate this year and so far I've been to one tournament, my first, and I made it to quarters(novice) but I was so anxious and scared the whole time I don't think I really enjoyed anything. Do you think I should continue or try something else?
congrats on making it to quarters your first tournament :) and everyone is nervous their first tournament! make that everyone is nervous their first time doing anything. donāt take the nerves and anxiety as an indication to stop. give it a few more tournaments :)

lmao I thought my di was shit but then my friend almost cried watching it. muhahahaaa.
:D
i have a few good friends but most people on the team are scared of him (like he gets in your face if you try to say something or just snaps at you, plus he's more of a bigger guy). i don't think he'll ever stop. we used to be really close friends but he we got in a fight and even though i tried to work things out, he won't have it. he claims that he has forgotten about it but still continues to be snarky and rude and tries to personally attack me
if you had a fight, then straight up ask him why youāre still being punished when he keeps saying everything is okay. because it sounds like he might still be holding a grudge from that
hi hello i just went through a shitton of your bog (not sorry at all btw) but i didnt realize forensics blogs were a thing! this made me happy with all of my interp heart
the reason i made this blog is because i found the others :) welcome to the club!! :D
well my coach praises him because he is also very enthusiastic but only gives him a few warnings when he starts to get really rude. otherwise, he's her favorite student and I'm kinda stuck on the side. whats worse is that he has a personal thing for me and keeps trying to tear down my cases and focuses on trying to make me look bad. idk what to do anymore, I've talked to him and he won't quit!!
Chances are your coach probably isnāt aware his behavior makes others uncomfortable. You can approach her with a simpleĀ āhey, sometimes this student does a, b, and c, and it really affects my focus because I feel d, e, and f. Iāve tried doing g, h, and i, but it doesnāt seem to be working. Do you have any suggestions for how to approach this?ā Because if youāve asked him to stop and he wonāt, thatās bullying and you should tell your coach that.
Another option: do you have any good friends on the team? Ones that can back you up verbally next time he tries to get at you? Not in the sense of building up sides, but in the sense that if he thinks heās merely bantering, have someone banter back, harder, to the point whereĀ ābanteringā with you is no longer amusing to him, and heāll stop.
advice?? so i have this one friend and he is super crazy in congress, but like a rude crazy. he loves debate but tbh i think he takes it too far. he is super rude to everyone and says he's going to tear them down and if he doesn't get his specific speech, he super angry and tells people to die. like honestly idk if i wanna still be in debate because he makes it so sour and sucks the fun out. yea i like to be competitive but he needs to take it down 10 notches. what should i do?
Donāt let him be the reason you quit debate. I know it can suck having someone like him around, but if debate is something you honestly enjoy, donāt ever let anyone like him make you quit. Can you talk to your coach about him?

Hey! So I'm starting forensic this year, and I'm in Duo Interp. Do you have any tips or websites that would be helpful?
Definitely trust your partner and try to stay in a very positive place with them. The second people stop blaming each other it can cause a riff which can cause things to get awkward which makes it harder to work on your piece. Practice all the time, I know this is obvious but definitely schedule as much time as you possibly can to practice WITH them. Every time you guys do it youāll get better. If you guys are blocking it yourselves, make sure everyone is comfortable with what they are doing. Also, get people to watch you guys perform. I know thatās what coaches are for, but the more people who see it and give you advice, the more you can improve on. Good luck this season!!!
Yes yes yes. I did duo with my best friend, and it is so important to trust each other and communicate openly and donāt do shitty things that lead to fights.
ALSO absolutely on having people watch your piece. We performed it for like anyone we could and our piece was so dynamic because we kept improving it.
Seriously considering becoming super political and supporting Bernie Sanders anyway I can.
Tag says youāre a libertarian, why on earth would you want to vote for bernie sanders?
Heās like the opposite of libertarian ideology.
can you explain? iām genuinely confused. most libertarians support him and a fair amount of his ideas, and while i might not call him every libertarianās choice, he doesnāt seem likeĀ āthe opposite of libertarian ideologyā.
Ive never heard of a libertarian who supports -a progressive tax plan -raising the minimum wage -further restricting gun rights -centralizing education -bigger central government -universal health care All of which are cornerstones of his campaign. I think you might be confused on what libertarianism is, its essentially a slightly more left version of anarchocapitalism. So essentially anything that will interfere with individual freedom (like taxing the rich more) is opposed by libertarians. Libertarianism is actually the political spectrum opposite of socialism, so yes, bernie is the opposite of a libertarian candidate. In conclusion, rand paul 2016 and may god have mercy on our souls.
gotcha, thank you for the explanation :D
