Unravel the Real You

As some of you know, before I went on hiatus for an unapologetic amount of time, I would post a Korean Word of the Day.  I do this to hold myself accountable to learning the language myself and hopefully to inspire/help you all pick up the language as well.  

Without further ado, the word of the day is 커피, or coffee. Pronounced “caw-phee”.

The word 커피  although it may seem small and familiar as it is already a word you know, it is a powerful word.  

First, it builds confidence: You know more words in other languages than you think.  The beauty of this word is that it is a cognate, meaning it sounds the same in Korean as it does in English.  The word is coffee and with the exception of your particular accent the word is pronounced as it would be in English.  Not everything is foreign when you're learning a new thing, take comfort in what is familiar and use it to your advantage, don’t make things harder than they need to be.

Second, coffee is not only a popular drink in Korea but is a drink many of us probably partake in way too much in our own language. I know I do and man, do I need it some days. Coffee is a necessity, coffee is a way of life, and if it is important enough to you that it is something you drink most days, wouldn't it be nice to say it in whatever language you're learning?
