Scooby-Doo is a dog who can talk, which is amazing, and he largely uses his powers of speech to communicate how scared he is of ghosts and monsters, and basically the only thing his owners do is drive him around the country putting him inside various haunted houses and such. I wish I could take Scooby-Doo aside, I want to say to him, these people are not your friends.
just realised Hudson Williams is two weeks YOUNGER than me. going to kms now
posting this take on my tumblr too bc i stand by it
how did I not know SHAUNA SHIPMAN was going to be in my gay hockey show???? (shauna has traumatised me. I feel fear when I see Sophie now. that's my beautiful brown eyed dictator right there)
so I read 5 and a half of the game changers books. (ironically.... game changers itself is the half.... I've read too much amazing stucky at impressionable ages to not get offended that kip is supposed to be BUCKY BARNES? my BUCKY? this boring, happy man? Bucky would kill Kip. no offense to Skip....)
my ranking is as follows:
1) The Long Game
There's no world in which this isn't the best book of the series. Shane and Ilya are perfect, the Ottawa team, Ilya's mental health journey, the wedding(s)!! this book could have been a 1000 pages long and I would still have been happily reading it. I honestly was hoping for a few more scenes of people's reactions to Shane and Ilya revealing how long they've been together, how much they love each other, how much of their public relationship was a lie etc. but that's because visibility and validation is my kink. Harris and Troy being my second favourite couple helps as well!
2) Heated Rivalry
I mean, what can I say? I adore fwb/situationship stories. I love feelings that are SO STRONG but remain unspoken because its just fucking scary to be vulnerable. I love sex being the vehicle for showing love and feelings developingā I really value the emotional aspect of sex being centered instead of it being dismissed as just porn, or just by the by. we're emotionally repressed people as a whole who often allow ourselves this ONE outlet for free and unembarrassed expression... when you find it so hard to be yourself in society, how we act during sex is sometimes the truest expression of our core selves. anyway. I love emotionally charged porn!!!!
Ilya and Shane are just the best blend of characteristics. They're both imperfect people. That's all a good love story really needs.
3) Role Model
ROLE MODELLLLL. troy is the best character. I loved the discussion surrounding complicity and guilt and forgiveness. I adore the cycle of Troy appearing to be this douchebag, repressed jock... and then two pages later subverting the reader and characters expectations by actually addressing whatever he'd done and apologising. when he explained to Harris about staring at his pins at the start of the book something in me went, oh, okay. this man can COMMUNICATE.
honestly the best sexual dynamic in the series for me. their first hook up scene in the hotel after the plane crash had me heated. that perfect mix of desperate, tender, dirty, imperfect. Harris can lean on the edge of too sweet for my tastes, but him advocating for what he wants out of sex and then actually getting it from Kyle was so satisfying that it made me like him so much more.
this is the book that I'm most tempted to go and re read, and I hope to God we get their story in the show in some form.
Ottawa team forever!!!
4) Common Goal
neither of these characters' are exactly the most interesting.... but DAMN the sex is fun to read. I actually really love when a couple sort of talks themselves into a corner of their own making, and then the conclusion of the tension is them both goingā actually what if we just forgot all of that shit we said? Benny also is hot as fuck in my mind and I loved the discussion of art and academia and hospitality all blended in here bc I related heavily. where is the rich hot middle aged person who can fund my lesbian bar while I lightly dom them!!! (jk...)
Scott and Kip are just so.... meh. they're fine as background characters but nothing in this really tempted me to go and read their book. give me some DRAMA
5) Tough Guy
Ryan is one of my favourite characters and Fabian my least. whoops. ughhhh this has so many parts which could have come together to make a great read but at a certain point it just falls a little. I still really enjoyed this, but honestly I just found fabian and his friends a little annoying and vapid. Fabian is a bit flat for me, and yet I feel like I'm veing constantly told that he's interesting but nothing is actually making me feel that.
I didn't have a bad time at all. but there's no pretending that this isn't insanely rushed and leaves a lot of plot threads hanging or loosely tied up or dropped for ages and then picked up 150 pages later.
the concept of these two as a couple is so good tho and the sex and discussion around performance issues and violence were really interesting and tender. I'm still happy I read it, i just found it the least satisfying
6) Game Changers
I'm like 30 pages in as of 5 days ago and nothing has compelled me to pick it back up particularly. sorry to this man! maybe if I'd actually read the books in order. unfortunately I'm now reading Wuthering Heights and it's proving to be much more stimulating than these two.... once more. sorry to this man.
order I read in for influence: HR, TLG, TG, CG, RM, GC

Iām seeing so many bad takes about Skip > Hollanov and I just need to get this out of my system.
Listen, I donāt care if you like Scott/Kip more than Ilya/Shane. Iām just annoyed when people fundamentally misunderstand the characters and their relationship.
[Minor spoilers for episodes 1-3 of Heated Rivalry]
I didnāt love Game Changer; I thought it was a bit boring. I actually liked the Scott/Kip episode a lot more than their book. I thought it did a good job of distilling the best parts of the book and FranƧois Arnaud (my bi king) and Robbie G.K. were great in it.
Most importantly, I think episode 3 is important context especially for people who havenāt read Game Changer and Heated Rivalry. Getting to know Scott and Kip makes something that happens later more impactful not just for them but also for Ilya and Shane. And it also helps you understand Ilya and Shane more now that you have a different queer relationship and a gay hockey player (and a gay regular person) to compare them to.
1. Even when two people like each other and are able to communicate openly about what they want (as opposed to Ilya and Shane who canāt for various reasons), the fact that one of them is a hockey player is still a huge obstacle. Scottās life is hockey and heās scared heāll lose it if he comes out. In 2025 itās still rough for pro athletes who come out. In the show weāre currently in 2014. The NHL is the only professional league that doesnāt have any out players. Thereās 600+ guys who play in the NHL statistically speaking thereās at least what 5-10% who are queer? But the environment being what it is no one has ever been brave enough to come out.
2. Itās one thing to be a queer hockey player in that deeply homophobic environment. Itās another thing to be two queer hockey players on rival teams. Boston and Montreal have been rivals for 100 years. The narrative the league has built around Shane and Ilya is huge. Yeah the league, people on their teams, a bunch of the fans, will react badly to their star players being queer. But the bigger drama is the fact that theyāll feel betrayed, like Shane and Ilya were lying to them the entire time. Loyalty is a huge thing in hockey culture and some fans might be like, whatever, I donāt care that youāre queer but you absolutely cannot be hooking up with someone on the rival team.
3. The personal stakes are different. Scott is a white dude.
Shane is Asian-Canadian in a sport that is very, very white. The fact that heās half-Asian comes up several times in the show so farāwhen heās drafted, when his mom talked about what it means for him to be visible, because lots of kids donāt get to see guys like him in the NHL. When the reporter compares him to Tiger Woods and Serena Williams. Thereās no depictions of outright racism but theyāre hinting that in the background shane is dealing with being a minority and at the very least deals with microaggresions on the daily.
Ilya is an immigrant. His family is toxic, Russia is not safe for queer people, and if heās outted and kicked out of the NHL, heāll have to go back to Russia and thatās his greatest fear.
4. Scott is also older than Ilya and Shane, and has had more time to figure his shit out. He knows himself and what he wants, he just hasnāt figured out how to make it work with hockey.
When Shane and Ilya first meet at the World Juniors, theyāre only 17! Shane is still figuring out his sexuality. Ilya is the first man heās slept with.
Ilya is more sexually experienced but is more emotionally closed off. Heās not struggling with his sexuality but struggling with how to be more vulnerable and communicate what heās feeling. He didnāt grow up in an environment where he was emotionally supported, and has been dealing with a lot of trauma alone.
And then thereās Kip who has a supportive dad and a queer friend group and is living a normal life as an out gay man without the kind of public pressure bearing down on Scott, Ilya, and Shane.
5. On the flip side, I think some people like Scott and Kip more because their relationship is more ātraditionalā. Like itās easier to understand whatās going on there. They have a meetcute. They fall in love and are in a committed relationship.
In comparison, Shane and Ilya seem ātoxicā to some people. I donāt think thatās true, I just think Shane and Ilya are two confused young people on separate personal journeys trying to figure out their own shit as well as trying to figure out their much more complicated situation.
I think thereās a lot of misunderstanding especially with regard to Ilyaās characterāpeople seem to think heās being abusive or manipulative towards Shane or whatever. But heās never intentionally hurtful or cruel to Shane and I think itās obvious that heās so smitten, he just scared to acknowledge his feelings and also even talking about them is hard because of the language barrier. At the end of the first sex scene in episode 2 Ilya clearly has a moment of panic when Shane kisses his forehead because heās like, oh shit this is turning into something more than a casual hookup and thatās even more dangerous for both of them. So he gets the fuck out of there and tries to stay away.
Itās wild to me that people think that Skip is āreal romanceā and Hollanov is ājust sexā. Just sex?!? The pining, the yearning, the flirting, the banter, the mutual concern and careāhow is this lost on yāall???
Heated Rivalry is doing some great visual storytelling and it is completely wasted on people with zero media literacy. Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams are acting the shit out of those rolesātheir microexpressions in every scene are telling you so much in lieu of the internal monologues you get in the book.
Anyway episode 4 is about to drop in a few hours and non-book readers are about to get a taste of what a down bad lover boy Ilya Rozanov actually is, literally just the most romantic motherfucker underneath that asshole facade.
They're like a bonded pair of feral cats who must not be separated at all costs
I saw a tiktok edit, read 5 books over one weekend, and only NOW am I actually pirating the goddamn episodes. I yearn for the specific pain of a situationship where both participants are equally insane about each other
WAKE UP DEAD MAN: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY (2025) dir. rian johnson
my actual favorite scene in wake up dead man is the one where jud is on the phone with the woman from the construction company and she asks him to pray for her, the sudden turn from humor to complete seriousness without it feeling like a tonal whiplash is really really good

Movies should be rated like gymnastics. First score is the difficulty (how complex is what you're trying to pull off?) second score is the execution. This would let us separate dumb movies that are competently made from interesting movies that don't quite stick the landing. Anyway. Another great idea from ME
