LITERALLY LIKE 4 DAYS LATER MY DAD SENT ME A PICTURE OF THE 3DS XL HE BOUGHT FOR ME WHILE I WAS AT SCHOOL

GUYS.

So as some of you are struggling I wanna try make this lesson as simple as possible but it is a hard topic to explain but I’ll try - so here we go:

Batchim (받침) is the bottom syllable of a consonant.

These are four ways you can see a syllable:

C V C

CV C

CV CC

C V CC

-C = Consonant -V = Vowel.

There is pronunciation rules along with batchim guys, here they are:

1) ㄱ ㅂ ㄷ} sound silent/muted in batchim. ㅈ ㅅ

ㅇ - becomes ‘ng’ at the end of a syllable.

ㄲ + ㅆ are the only double consonabts that ever appear in batchim

2)If ㅌ in batchim comes before an 이 in the next syllable it is pronounced as a ㅊ for example:

같이 would be pronounced at 가치

3) The carry over rule: If a consonant is in batchim and the next syllable starts with a vowel, carry over the consonant sound. Example: 집에서 is actually pronounced ji-be-seo. 씻다 - (sheet-dah) 씻어요 (shee-seo-yo)

If the syllable ends on a consonant and another one starts withe same consonant the carry over rule just makes it a double consonant. But if it’s not then use the muted/silent batchim sounds that I wrote about above.

Example: 듣다 pronounced as 드따

NOT ABOUT BATCHIM: Consonants sound different at the start of a word:

ㅂ - p 바보 (pa-bo) ㄱ - k 가족 (ka-jok) (muted batchim) ㄷ - t 대답 (tae-dap) (muted batchim) ㅈ - ch 저는 (cheo-nun) ㅇ - silent 입 (ip) (muted batchim)

If two consonants come up in batchim - these are the categories you split them in if they come before a consonant of a new syllable:

Pronounce 1st Consonant: ㄱㅅ ㄴㅎ ㄴㅈ ㄹㅂ ㄹㅌ ㅂㅅ ㄹㅎ

If the next vowel starts the next syllable, carry over the second consonants sound and pronounce both.

Examples: 없다 (eop-dah) 없어요 (eob-seo-yo) 싫다 (shil-dah) 싫어요 (sil-heo-yo) 앉다 (an-dah) 앉어요 (an-jeo-yo)

Pronounce 2nd Consonant: ㄹㅅ ㄹㅁ ㄹㅍ ㄹㄱ

Use the same carry over rule for these if the next syllable starts with a vowel.

Example: 읽다 (ik-dah) 읽어요 (il-geo-yo)

Also one more weird rule:

If a ㅅ in batchim is followed by an 이 in the next consonant the ㅅ makes an ‘n’ sound: ㅅ+이=니

Example: 나뭇잎 is pronounced like 나무닢

I’m gonna leave it there before it gets even more confusing. I’m not great at explaining but hopefully if you read this a few times and find other resources it’ll help you.

Hi there! Thanks for asking, and sorry for the late reply ^^’ Well I find that it’s easiest if you can work out a colour for each sentence part, e.g. adjectives, verbs, nouns and particles. Those are the main parts. Once you get used to common components like the subject in the sentence, you can skip colour coding them and just code the parts of the sentences that are new. It’s as simple as that! If you try and color code everything it’ll just make things confusing. 

The other way you can code things is by coding subject, predicate, clauses, modifiers and phrases, but those can get a little confusing and aren’t as practical for learning a new language - it might be easier to code when learning a new grammar structure for example. 

As for the format of my study notes, I always use new grammar structures as a heading. Then write an explanation beneath, and end with an example colour-coded sentence. For vocabulary, I use flashcards (either paper or digital with Anki works well) since writing lists is pretty pointless. There’s no point in writing words out again and again unless you’re doing handwriting practice - I was always taught to do this in Saturday Chinese school, and it was completely useless - I would write out maybe 200 characters (10 times for 20 new characters) and remember none of them. 

있다 - to be at a location

먹다 - to eat

가다 - to go

만나다 - to meet

닫다 - to close

열다 - to open

원하다 - to want (an object)

만들다 - to make

하다 - to do

밀하다 - to speak

이해하다 - to understand

좋아하다 - to like

저는 가끔 너무 많이 먹어요. - I eat too much sometimes
