🎍“Shimekazari” is an one of the New Year decoration in Japan, it’s a wreath that’s often hang on the front door. It is said to be a ward against evil spirit, and work as a portal for the higher spirit to enter our life. It is usually weaved with rice straw or hemp rope and have many other elements that symbolize different meaning, such as pine needles, ferns, Japanese bitter orange...etc I decided that I would combine this idea and use something that's accessible around me to make my own multi-cultural portal wreath to welcome the new year. Here is the brief list of what plants I used mean in both Japanese and Native culture. 🍃 Sweet grass -- Sacred Native plant. Clearing, purifying, bring positivity, strength connections, love, peace and harmony of mind, body and spirit. Pine -- The tree that "god" reside, long life, and strength. Immortality and eternity, knowledge of wisdom, birth. Fern -- Pure mind, long life, balanced love, attract love, protection, prosperity and access to ancestors. Mugwort -- Good journey, health, moon associated Juniper -- Protection Hawthorn — protection, love, transformation Pussy Willow -- Higher earnings, success, freedom, love, intuition, moon associated. 🍃 They are all tied together with Japanese paper string called "Mizuhiki" and organic Indigo fabric I died. Mizuhiki is meant for purifying and strengthen the connection and used in many ceremonies in Japan. Indigo is simply the love I have for and for deep history with ancestors. On the 15th of Jan, Shimekazari is burned in the fire to set off those spirits in the air. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank you @antidote_apothecary_teabar for carrying sweet grass that inspire me to do this project! . . .
