I have a ton of new followers so I just wanted to post this. There is a difference between an emotional support animal, therapy animal, and service dog. Please know the difference!

“Emotional Support Service K9s” don’t exist. “Emotional Service Dogs” aren’t a thing. 

Psychiatric service dogs are a thing and it’s important to get terminology correct! When talking to other people, if you’re using the incorrect terminology, more and more people will hear you say you have a “emotional therapy service dog” and think that therapy dogs and service dogs are the same. THEY AREN’T.

OKAY SO I had a coworker who was otherwise a standard clueless Straight White Guy, but this dude loved his wife and he knew her real good. And his wife LOVES shitty grocery store icing. So the first thing she’d always do with any cake is shove her fingers into the corner and scoop off whatever abomination of a flower was on there and eat it off her fingers. SO THIS DUDE GOES TO THE STORE AND HAS THEM MAKE A WHOLE CAKE OUT OF FROSTING Brings it home to his wife for her birthday She shoves her fingers into it and then they just keep going FROSTING ALL THE WAY DOWN He said the look on her face was the best thing he’d ever seen in his life It gives me hope that even a clueless Straight White Guy knew and loved his wife enough to give her the perfect birthday present cake frosting abomination

Like this one time, I had a machine that was cleaning some extremely dirty grain (our wheat was full of peas, which we didn’t handle, so our machines just dumped it as oversized garbage along with pieces of stalks etc), and had this really heavy sack (because it was a regular burlap sack but now it was full of fucking peas) that the peas were going into that usually would be emptied maybe twice a shift or so, and we had so many peas coming out that it was needing to be emptied like every ten minutes. And by the time you lugged this like eighty-pound bag of peas to the other side of the floor to dump, and then cleaned up the mess the machine dumped on the floor while you were doing that, it was damned near time to dump the peas again.

So it’s getting time for my lunch break (mandatory half hour, plus two coffee breaks, also mandatory), and there is no way in hell I can leave it; the peas will pile up high enough that there will be a fire risk from them rubbing against the machine.

So I call my supervisor and tell him my lunch is almost due, and he should either get someone to spell me off or else shut the machine down so I can have my break (which I desperately needed at that point, as you can imagine).

Well, they had a shitload of wheat to clean all the peas out of, and didn’t want to shut the machine down. So first he told me to let the machine just overflow and clean it up after; and when I told him that would likely start a fire with how many peas were coming out, he told me to “just take my break between emptying the sack.” Which, like, does not actually count as taking a fucking break from it.

So I called down to my union rep and told him what was up, he talked to the supervisor, and then him and the supervisor came and had a look at how many peas were coming out (so many that we were joking that the peas were contaminated with wheat), and then grabbed a couple of guys off sweeping to empty the bag while I ate.

And then put a second body on the floor to help handle all those peas because omfg.

Unions are the best. Remember that in the mid-Eighties, almost half of all jobs were unionized. It was Reagan catering to corporations that got all the workers’ rights that people quite literally had fought and died for almost a hundred years previously rolled right back.

like, fundamentalist christian doctors don’t deny trans people medical care because they believe that somebody should provide the care but they just don’t want to be the one to do it. they deny the care because they don’t believe the person should receive care. Their refusal to provide care isn’t just “oops you’re in the wrong field,” as if they were a person with a peanut allergy working in a peanut factory. It is an intentional and calculated part of why they are in the field in the first place — to extend religious control and condemnation to the medical realm.

the pediatrician who spent an entire consultation telling one of my friends at 16 or 17 that he would go to hell if he kept choosing to be gay wasn’t just “not cut out for the job,” he was specifically in that job in order to do that particular thing. Kim Davis didn’t deny the gay couple a marriage license because she couldn’t personally do it, she denied them a marriage license because she thought that people like them should not get marriage licenses and that a clerk should deny them and by god she was going to be that clerk

For this to be true, we have to be convinced that these people wouldn’t have pursued the job if they didn’t specifically have that desire to refuse service. Keep in mind, a lot of them got into those jobs at times when that wasn’t a possibility, because there was no service to refuse. We’ve only had legal recognition of gay marriage at all for a handful of years. For most of the time a lot of these people were in their jobs, “refuse marriage license to gay couple” wasn’t a thing that they would do, because no one would have asked, because it wasn’t a thing anyone had even seriously thought about, and it certainly wasn’t a legal thing. You could be the most pro-gay-rights person in the world a few years ago, and still not be able to grant marriage licenses to gay couples.

The idea of someone becoming a pediatrician when no part of the job interests them except harassing gay kids seems highly implausible to me. That is a vanishingly small portion of the workload, none of the study or practice or education relates to it.

This implies a degree of focus and motivation that I don’t think is remotely plausible. I don’t think the bakers who had the famous case about the gay wedding cake were bakers because they wanted to deny gay people wedding cakes. I think they were bakers because they enjoyed baking, and then after they’d been baking for a while, the world changed, and suddenly there was a possibility of being asked to make a custom wedding cake for a gay couple, which is not a problem that they would likely have seriously considered earlier.

how do you feel about the quote “if you ever find yourself stuck between two people, go for the second. because if you truly loved the first person, you wouldn’t have fallen in love with the second.” ??? i imagine that most poly people love their partners equally, so do you ever feel guilty that you might not love your first partner as much as the subsequent partners, because you feel in love with them later??
