sneaking into the kitchen at 3am like
i hope we have some got damn juicy juice boy shit i am thirsty as a mother fucker
fun prank: go on dA and look for awful, beginning artists who draw cats/wolves on ms paint and comment on their picture and tell them how great it looks and that they should keep drawing because theyāre going to get better and better, and to not be a dick about their drawing skill because theyāre still starting out and learning!!!!
DRAW THEM FANART. DRAW THEM FANAAAAART. Iāll always remember the older people who humored me when I was an 11-year-old drawing cats and Pokemon, and when they drew myĀ āOCsā I didnāt get over it for weeks. I still have some that I printed out and put in the front of my binder.
You donāt have to become a mentor, and you donāt have to tell them anything about their art that isnāt true. But you CAN make them shit their pants with just an hour or two of your time, and some of them wonāt ever forget the first time someone acknowledged their creativity.
This.
Itās great and everyone wins.
I love the good intentions of this, but please keep in mind that young and inexperienced artists deserve the same respect that all artists do. Even if you have the BEST intentions, you could still easily intimidate a young artist with these kind of advances.
ASK someone before you draw their OC. It can be nice to surprise someone with a drawing of their character, but itās better to know that you have permission to do so first and foremost.Ā
Keep in mind that young artists also have no obligation to thank you for your comments, or to even thank you for drawing them presents (particularly if the presents are unsolicited).
Itās important to consider how young and inexperienced artists will feel when more established artists approach their work. Many young artists may take your compliments with gratitude, but some may feel that you are being sarcastic, insincere, or that you are simply humoring them. Consider your words carefully, and do your best to make sure that their feelings are held over yours.
Above all else, please make sure to never make posts insisting that people draw for or leave nice comments for a particular young artist. This can not only be extremely overwhelming for the person, it can also open them up to hateful messages.
There are two more things I forgot to mention-
Constructive criticism can be very helpful and beneficial to young artists, but it is not always wanted and you shouldnāt assume that even the kindest criticism will be taken positively. Consider asking someone before dropping a critique-bomb on them, and keep it positive when you do.
Also keep in mind that not everyone feels bad about the artwork they currently make. Not everyone is aware of their current skill level. While you may feel low about your coloring skills, a young artist might feel PROUD about theirs. If you leave comments likeĀ ājust keep at it, I know youāll get better!ā when an artist already feels theyāre doing good, it can be more of a letdown than a pick-me-up. If someone leaves self-deprecating comments on their artwork it is certainly good to let them know where they did good, but if someone is expressing pride in their description, be careful not to stomp out that emotion.Ā āI know you can improve!ā can easily be misconstrued asĀ āthis isnāt great, you can do betterā
