Levi: You really think Petra is the one for me? Hange: Totally! You're terrible, she's amazing, you balance each other out!
I’ve always loved the idea of Hange rooting for Levi and Petra!
“So…” Hange trailed off, pursing their lips in deep thought as they pondered how to discuss a certain observation they’ve recently made in a manner that wasn’t going to be immediately shut down by the grump before them.
Levi remained silent, all of his attention focused on the tea that he was painstakingly brewing.
Hange continued to observe him carefully, deciding that this was as approachable as he was going to get.
“You’ve put in the request for your squad, huh?”
Silence, save for the sound of hot water dribbling into a teacup.
“Eld seemed like a no-brainer, even Erwin had his eyes on him for a possible promotion,” they continued once they realized they weren’t going to get much of a response from the raven-haired man. “Same with Gunther, just as talented as Eld, but his quiet demeanor gets him passed up. And that Oruo kid, I’m surprised you ended up choosing him considering he’s just the type of guy to get on your nerves.” They shrug before continuing. “But the number of solo kills speaks for itself, I guess.”
Levi still hasn’t made any indication that he’s been paying attention to any of this, he simply sips his tea, and Hange notes that he seems quite pleased with his brew even if his expression doesn’t change.
“And that Petra Ral,” they recite the name and observe, but still nothing.
“I’ve always commended her for her assists, always sweeps in like a hawk when other soldiers fumble a kill.” They make a sweeping gesture with their hand as they explain this. “Honestly, the way she uses her ODM gear kinda reminds me of you.”
A twitch of the brow and Hange thinks they finally got him. He’s definitely listening now.
“She must have been watching you closely all this time. I mean, you guys have worked together before so it makes sense,” they continue with enthusiasm, noticing his now growing interest in the topic at hand. “If you ask me, I think she’s the smartest choice out of all those guys.”
His curiosity clearly piqued, he puts his cup down and regards Hange for the first time since they started the conversation.
“What makes you say that?” he asks plainly as if trying to downplay his interest.
“She’s good for you,” Hange answers bluntly causing him to make a face. “Seriously, she’s amazing, an actual ray of sunshine, and she’s not afraid to bust someone’s chops either. I’ve seen her go toe to toe with guys as big as Erwin and win! She’s great for morale. You on the other hand? Terrible! Sorry Levi, but you’re an absolute grump, humanity’s strongest but just downright crotchety. I mean - OW!”
They howled as Levi gave them a well-aimed kick to the shins under the table, his face crumpled to his infamous scowl.
“Case in point!” The brunette exclaimed as they nursed their leg. “Look, she’s strong, sure, but she could very well reach her full potential under your watch. As for you? You could learn a thing or two from someone like her. If you stay this up-tight much longer you’ll just turn gray and die before we can make any meaningful progress out there.”
Levi deadpans and picks up his teacup once again.
“You just wasted all that air spouting nonsense,” he takes a sip of his tea. “But first thing’s first, those shits’ll have to learn how to properly scrub floors before they get anything out of me.”
Hange beams at him. “Oh! You just reminded me, according to Nifa, Petra was the clean-freak of her graduating class. When she got transferred to Mike’s squad she even whipped them into shape. You guys were made for each other!”
He doesn’t reply to this but his permanent scowl shifts a little, enough to prove Hange’s theory: Levi definitely has a soft spot for Petra Ral.
